2nd part of the RPS preview on Civ V:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/10/states-of-the-nation-more-civ-v-thoughts/

Interestingly:
"At first, they seemed like they were just dead space on the map, architectural squatters preventing my expansion but offering none of the trade benefts of a full-on Civ. Get away, shoo! Get off my land.

They’re the only element of Civ V that I’ve ever hissed at, but taking a few steps back I recognised the irked purist in myself and had a closer nose. What City States actually mean is a whole new way to play the game. I stopped hissing pretty quickly"

Well that was a nice preview on the uses of city-states. Most of the information though we already knew. The part on befriending the city-states and in return to gain units , resarch or culture was already known. Also the authour mentions the Greek Unique power there is another civ that benefits from allying with city-states that is Siam. Apart from that a nice preview posted.

Thanks Grey2ham !

About city-states : "...or you can turn them off entirely when you setup a new game"
Wasn't aware of that. Nice !

That little detail escaped me thanks for pointing it out neev so that means you can play without city-states. That can make some intresting variant of play.

Social Policy: Educated Elite - Allied City States will occasionally gift you Great People.

That doesn't suck.

Doesn't suck? I think it's great. For exemple different kinds of city-states would give you different Great People. For exemple Florence would give you Great Artists while Ailmaty would give you Great Generals.

Pointed it out to Arioch as he didn't have that option on his site.
Or I'm just a bit blind.

its not an option like "one city challenge" tick box, its more like how you choose how many civ's to play against. There has been screen shots of the "set up game" screen showing their is a scroll bar to easily select the number of city states to be on your map choosing anything from 0 to 22 I think.

Even nicer !
I missed that screenshot, thanks :)

I went and found the screen shot, took some searching.

Great, thanks, hope this feature will make it to the final product, bacause it changes a lot of things. No religions to change AI behaviour + no city-states = a very bland game on the diplo side, but potentially a very good one for killing everything on the map.

Thanks for the screenshot. I see a number after "City-States". Does anyone know if that means you can set the number of city states, like you select the number of civs?

This is actually one feature I'm really looking forward do as it gives the whole game a real new dynamic, and really opens up diplomatic possibilities.

Yes it does I belive it ranges from 0 to 24.

Thanks Caeserportugal

Thanks for the article. :)

Siam or Greece with the Patronage social policies tree sounds like fun. Lots and lots of minions. :D
