As an update, a recent opinion dynamics poll seems to agree with my viewpoints on this. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/08/1...nt-think-wrong-build-mosque-near-ground-zero/

While a majority of American voters think the Muslim group that wants to put a mosque near ground zero has the right to build it there, most think it would be wrong to do so.

A Fox News poll released Friday found that 61 percent of voters think the Muslim group has the right to build a mosque in lower Manhattan.

However, 64 percent think it would be wrong to put a mosque there.

Thirty percent says it is appropriate to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center a few blocks from the site of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City.

Just over a third (34 percent) says the group doesn't have that right to build a mosque there.

Comments?

I would like a poll that isn't from Faux News plox.

Can't these people just suck it up, and let them have their place of worship? You can complain about it all you want, but just let them have it!

Its not from Faux News, its from Opinion Dynamics. Foxnews is just reporting the findings.

But to appease you lets give it a shot. How about this one from NBC?

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local-beat/New-Yorkers-Oppose-Ground-Zero-Mosque-Poll-97602569.html

A majority of New Yorkers oppose plans to build a mosque and Muslim cultural center two blocks from Ground Zero, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll released Thursday.

Fifty-two percent of the respondents said they did not want the mosque to be built at all, 31 percent are in favor of it, and 17 percent are undecided.

"New York enjoys a reputation as one of the most tolerant places in America, but New Yorkers are opposed to a proposal to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero," said Quinnipiac University Polling Institute Director Maurice Carroll in a press release.

"Is it because we're still nursing the wounds from the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center or is it more like bigotry?" he asked.

Broken down by borough, Manhattan was the most in favor of the mosque, with only 36 percent of residents against it. On the other end of the spectrum was Staten Island, where 73 percent of respondents were opposed.

"Liberal Manhattan accepts the mosque and trusts Islam," observed Carroll. "Staten Island, where there's controversy about another proposed mosque, is more skeptical."

According to the poll, 56 percent of white voters, 45 percent of black voters, and 60 percent of Hispanic voters oppose the mosque. Along religious lines, 66 percent of Jews, 66 percent of Catholics, and 46 percent of Protestants were opposed.

That better?

Dont like either foxnews or NBC? How about CNN? http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/08/11/cnn-poll-most-oppose-mosque-near-ground-zero/

A proposed mosque to be built two blocks from the World Trade Center has little support nationwide, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll suggests.

According to the new survey out Wednesday, nearly 70 percent of all Americans oppose the controversial plan to build the mosque just blocks away from the solemn site in lower Manhattan while just 29 percent favor the construction.

Ow. 70% opposed. Thats gotta hurt.

See, its apparent that people here in cfc ot have greatly underestimated the amount of pushback on this issue. This isnt about bigotry when its involving such a vast majority, plain and simple.

A poll isn't the way to conduct building regulation and planning.

Should we ban Irish themed pubs from London, Manchester, etc. because of the IRA?

Yes, though it is over a month old...

But then again, people who oppose this aren't going to change their opinions anytime soon, which is a shame, since I thought most were in favor of the rights the constitution guarantees us.

EDIT: @Mobby

I'm sure I could find some polls about the Iraq war and international opinions of the US (pre-Obama) if you want me to.

I'm sure I could find some polls about the Iraq war and international opinions of the US (pre-Obama) if you want me to.

And I can show you the election results from '06 and '08 that reflect those opinions as well.

People arent happy about this. A vast majority of people. How anyone can think its a good idea is beyond me.

How anyone can be so bigoted is beyond me.

We have something in common!

By non-muslims?

By non-muslims?

By both.

If muslim/non muslim relations are made worse by mere proximity then we are all doomed.

No, we are not. But its sad that compromise, like that offered by the Gov of New York cant be reached.

Seriously, I think people greatly underestimate the effect 9/11 had on the USA. And this shows it.

Wait, so because of one mosque the entire muslim/non-muslim relations will go even more sour.

I think by the reaction shown by the polls, this isnt just about another mosque. Do you?

No. How should it matter if a mosque is next to the site? There is nothing against it but bias and fear of bias.

Is it worth pointing out that the reason for the attack was the perception (right or wrong) by the extremists that the US acts aggressively towards muslims and muslim countries, and not just because Islam hates America?
