Whenever I need to decide which Civilization to play, or which Technology to research, or which Policy to adopt in CiV, I use the following tables:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub...RdVJmTUF1aWRQcTF1Umhkcnc&hl=en_GB&output=html

Here is a version that can be edited; if you spot mistakes or things I forgot, just go ahead correcting them. I will take sensible edits into the HTML version every now and then. You are welcome to post a note to this thread if you change anything, otherwise changes might go unnoticed:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AhzgHGL5aKiFdFVlU3BWSzhhNjF0QmU3N3N0azI2M1E&hl=en_GB#gid=2

Color Coding is yellow for Civs, purple for Policies and cyan for Techs. I tried to make the tables non-redundant, so one should intuitively know where to find what.

If there are sections within one table, that is for structure. I did not follow a rigorous rule for structuring the tables and I do not think that this is necessary, since the tables are not huge.

Of course everybody is welcome to use this spreadsheet as a basis for some other reference to CiV (I'm looking at you, Anion :D ). The spreadsheet is just the most comfortable solution that spontaneously occured to me.

One type of mistake that I would expect to be common in the tables is unsystematic capitalization of words. Since my mother tongue is German, I'm used to capitalizing all nouns; and I tried to treat civ-specific words as proper nouns mostly. There are bound to be mistakes here, and if someone takes the time to do a correct capitalization, that would be also welcome :)

very well done!

you write railroads enable more profitable trade routes? is that true? i thought the only effect was getting a +50% production modifier for a city if it is connected to the capital via railoads/harbors.

some suggestions for additional stuff to put in there:

- list of buildings which grant specialist slots, ordered by type of specialist for example
- a table showing the yield for all combination of tiles/modifiers
- an overview of the promotions, maybe presented as a tree, so you can easily plan how to choose promotions to reach a certain one of the advanced ones

I do not know where I took that information about the railroads from, so I'll delete it from the tables. Thanks!

Thanks also for the nice ideas!

The thing with the specialist slots would be nice to have, indeed. I think I would put that into another table. The XML file about the buildings gives information about the specialists, so if anyone wants to type that information into a new table, you're welcome. Or has anyone compiled it already somewhere?

There is already a table showing tile/modifier yields here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=382196
Do you mean something like that? I would leave it out of the spreadsheet, since it is too much of a micromanagement thing. I usually do not bother about this in CiV. But if someone has a good way to put it in a separate table, I'll happily take it into the HTML.

The Promotions are a very good idea; I'll probably add them as a fourth decision category next to civs, policies and techs. Is there already an overview somewhere, so I'd just be able to copy it? I'll do it as soon as I have time to do it, but I'd welcome anybody's help with it :)

Is the spreadsheet still a WIP?

So it is or isn't a WIP?

I'm too lazy to actually go edit the spreadsheet, but here's some suggestions:

Gold tab:
How does building a mine give "possible 1 Gold Bonus"? Are you talking about mining luxury resources?
Germany/Ottomans don't get increased gold from barbarian encampments, they get a 50% chance of a free unit.
Big Ben gives a 25% discount to purchasing units, and isn't mentioned in that part

Resources tab:
You should clarify the Bazaar: provides one additional copy.
It might make more sense to group the civ-specific bonuses together, instead of putting Russia's bonus three times.

Science:
Under free technologies, it might be worth mentioning that the Porcelain Tower's free scientist can be used for a free technology.

Thanks for doing this, it's pretty useful.

Mine: Yes. I would welcome more sensible ideas on how to display tile improvements in the individual tables, since I know that the current solution is quite bad. I honestly do not know how to go about that.

Ottomans/Germans: Are you sure about that? I am on Linux right now, so I cannot access CiV. A source would be welcome. I thought Ottomans have a possible Gold bonus with sinking ships. With the Germans you are probably right, so I corrected it.

Big Ben: Added it.

Bazaar: Corrected

The grouping is a conscious design choice. In the spreadsheet, I did not list anything new. I just regrouped all information so that it is ordered in a way that would help with making decisions. If one wants to see the Russian bonuses all in one place, one has that in CiV already. Thus, in my opinion, no need for that.

Porcelain Tower: Slipped somehow, can now be found under "Great Scientists". I do not want to explain all the things one can do with Great Persons in the spreadsheet, so if one needs e.g. free techs, one needs to look at the Great People table also.

Thanks for all the hints, I would probably not have noticed the mistakes otherwise :)

Good job on this.

Just one thing you can add. The Mughal Fort gives +3 gold after Flight. This gold, of course, benefits from gold bonuses in the city. All three gold buildings improve it to +5.49 gold. In a Capital with Commerce policy, it further improves to +6.24 gold. So the building doesn't just become "free" after Flight. It will actually provide a small bonus in a gold specialized city.

Added, thanks!

As a rule, the table brings together information which is far apart in the game or not accessible from within the game, so I especially like information about the concrete numbers which are still missing from the table. Since the maintenance information is easily accessible from within the game, I see no need to add it to a table. The way I see it, the 3 Gold from the Mughal Fort are implemented in the way one would expect it (though there are other possibilities), thus no need for further comment in the table.

I love these, and thanks so much for the work.

I'm trying to print them out to have in front of me during gameplay, and the colors you've added (which I also like) are not printing.

I click on the second link above, and then when I click on the Print link on that page, your document page opens with Adobe, and I see the nice page with colors.

Then I print it out, and all I get is the text.... no lines, no colors.

Help?

In the second link, you can click File > Download as > PDF... and then format the tables according to your wishes. Grid lines and colors should be correctly printed. Hope that solves the problem.

That's how I downloaded, PDF. And I can't print lines or color.

Don't you need an ability to EDIT PDF's to do such things? All I have is Adobe Acrobat, no ability to Edit PDF's.

When specifying the PDF options, you can toggle the grid. And the colors are in the PDF. As far as I know, PDFs are printed as they appear on the screen, as long as the printer driver does not do funny things.

Ah, maybe there was a misunderstanding: I mean the File menu inside Google Docs, NOT the browser's File menu. There is a menu bar below the Google Docs logo, that's the one I mean.

Google Docs also has PDF exporting capabilities, similar to some browsers, and only in the Docs menu one can toggle the grid of the spreadsheet.

Posting this as a separate post so you get a notification if you have those enabled.
