Mongol scenario tips? (king and above only)

Getting stuck, need some suggestions.

My current strategy:
1) promote 2 horseman to archers
2) take out western xia. Avoid contact with wu zetian.
3) meet wu, she's friendly. Siam(?) isnt.
4) heal and wait for wu to declare war on Siam, take Siams capital and work south.
5) take out Korea, move south, take japan.

Problem comes right about now. The horseman no longer are effective, I'm producing little science, and my citizens are furious.
 
I just finished post patch King level Mongol scenario.

I didn't wait at all - upgraded one horseman to Keshik and attacked Western Xia. Took it and went straight away after Siam.

I used hit and run tactics. Rolled the Khan close to the city and started shooting it with Keshiks, then used one horseman to conquer it.

I didn't bother with Japan, my main force went with the road and crushed everything in the path. Only Arabia's capital caused some problems and stalled my conquest. Had to wait for Lancer, because horseman couldn't take the city even when just one hp was left.

Explain how the Khan works. Does it heal adjacent units or do they have to be "on top?" I don't notice much of a difference...
 
Just like a general, only fast:

+15% attack bonus to all unites within 2 tiles
+1 heal to all 'healing' units adjacent.
 
I think they have more healing than a typical general too. I could be wrong. So I guess conquest means you only need to take the capitals of the civs? That makes it less worrisome, but China is still quite hard. I think best to avoid them.
 
The Khan is useful, because it can keep up with your fast-moving army. It provides additional attack bonus of +20%. I always healed inside my own territory and didn't notice any additional bonus there. I used all the additional khans for the golden age.

As for keshiks I went for the double-attack promotion. Which if pretty good to gain more exp and to hit your enemy even harder.

China and Siam seem so strong, but I avoided their units as much as possible and attacked only the cities. In my game Siam was so worried it offered me his gold and one city which was still unconquered. I took it the peace deal and attacked China. In the mean time peace deal nicely expired and I took Bejing and followed "the silk road".

My biggest worry was to stay above -9 happiness.
 
do you guys raze all CS's you capture??

Also, seems like you can't ignore Siam since he will declare war very quickly and overrrun your cap
 
I beat this on Diety last night. Here's what I did.

  • Ignore the City States
  • Most Civ's (8 on Deity) are on the mainland. The only one East of you is Japan and they are on an island with three cities.
  • Destroy and battle only one major power at a time (the exception being Japan, get started on them early - they have a city on a two tile island!)
  • Everytime you defeat a major Civ you'll get 1,000 gold. Use this to rush units (sometimes courthouses).
  • You will run negative 10 or greater happiness sometimes and will have to deal with it.
  • I razed any city that didn't have horses or iron.
  • You need to defeat 8 civs in 100 turns (1 every 12 turns)
  • Pillage first attack second. Know your enemy. If they are horse heavy. Hit their horse resource, so they get the -50% penalty. Much easier this way. Always take out their luxuries and resources. The AI does suffer from the unhappy penalty and the lack of resource penalty. I've seen it. Heck, I counted on it.
  • Treat workers as targets of opportunity, but don't break ranks to capture one (lose flanking bonus)
  • Use flanking bonuses (they don't work against cities). Destroy most his army in a first strike if you can (if you mass at the border, they seem to do so too)
  • On Diety, I built nothing but military. If you pillage like I said above, your unhappiness penalty and his will cancel out.
  • Concentrated Fire is a must!
  • Surprisingly, the barbarians helped (but not much). Towards then end, they were running around with Rifleman, I even lost a city to them (and got the achievement). They did take two enemy cities for me also.
  • The Rebellion penalty appears to be turned off for this scenario. There were a few times when I was running negative 20 happiness...

It is a battle royale! Take no prisoners, accept no peace. 10 turns of peace in a 100 turn scenario is devastating...

If I think of anything else, I'll add it.

True, but it works to your advantage if you decide to attack two opponents at the same time. You can then spend 24 turns attacking two opponents together with one peace treaty allowed for each that still gives you around 10 turns only fighting one enemy, just as if you rigidly only attacked one player at a time, plus you get the peace benefits.

It might also be helpful to get a Keshik in range of Japan right away, since with the range promotion you can target a city from Korea and rack up XP and/or a peace deal long before you're ready to actually eliminate him.

no you gotta capture all the cities

just beat it on warlord it wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy either

can't imagine trying to play it on prince or higher though
 
The key is getting your keshiks to 100xp for the double attack promotion.

- Pick military tradition as your first policy.
- Never upgrade a horseman that has melee promotions.
- Try to use all your attacks, even if it means shooting a city that will heal next turn.
- After you clear the area of dangerous units, let cities and archers shoot at your keshiks for extra xp.

Keshiks can M-move into empty cities, but they can't capture garrisoned cities. I go with 8 keshiks and 2 horsemen, and the horsemen need a khan dedicated to healing them to keep up with the keshiks.

Bonus tip: Focus production and build the heroic epic in your first 10 turns. You can't build it while razing a city, and you'll be razing a LOT of cities.
 
Wow, great tips! I started a Prince difficulty and ran about without much direction and Siam kicked my heiny.

I'd hoped that a complete lack of knowledge of the scenario would be okay to win, but it really helps to know who you're going to meet and where they are located :-(

On Diety, when I beat it post-patch (barely), I couldn't afford to split my forces (because of the nerfs). I needed almost every unit on task, either countering enemy units or capturing cities (usually countering then capturing). I never seemed to have the resources to fight a two-front war.

Also, there is no guarantee you can get peace when you want it (especially if you started the war - see below for the only exception). In theory it sounds good, but wouldn't have worked out for me; too much uncertainty.

My twist on one of my favorite lines from the movie Roadhouse... "I'm gonna get all the PEACE I need when THEY'RE dead!" :)

Wow I suck at this scenario. I can't even beat it on warlord. The AI seems to have the same amount of troops regardless of level. Is there only thing that changes the happiness and conquered civs requirement?

I think my problem was I took a lot of the city states, while they do give you bonuses its probably not worth the turns and units.

I actually just beat this on immortal with a timed victory (score) with 3 civ's left and must admit was pretty surprised as I was not even paying attention to that portion of the games mechanic as I figured it would be disabledl, got all the achievements and everything too...I feel dirty, it shouldn't work like that for scenario's....has any one else experienced this while blatantly failing the objective? As long as you have the highest score you seem to win anyway, pretty lame design....
