Here are some simple early medieval units I knocked together.

These are very good!

Inspired a passage…

…and Plotinúr, having become a Jarl by order of King Thordenfálli, raised his banners and gathered his thegns, with their hirthmen carrying great spears, and the freemen took up their axes and followed him to battle…

-from the Plotínunðar Saga, CivFanátiksbók codex.

Surely not...you are joking aren't you?

In case you're not joking, that's the way we write our dates over here in England.

Uh, no. I wasn't joking. And I didn't know that. I also forgot Plotinus is a Londoner.
Excuse me. Learn something new everyday.

Hot dawg! These are great! I love the theme, the modelling and the original animations (?). Haven't heard about a hirthman before, but I aim to find out now. :)

Great units as always!!

I think it's written like that throughout the rest of Europe too.

Anyway, very nice units, Jarl Plotínur.

Very nice, Plotinus  Good to see you putting your hand to units again.

Nice stuff. Could you provide some background info on the Thegn?

Land-holding aristocrats who had to equip themselves; inferior to the pre-Norman Conquest Housecarls in quality and commonly collectively refered to as the fyrd.

Best,

Oz

wow, wow, wow, that one hit very near. i wanted to ask one of the creators these days to create a norman pack. could this be done by somebody?? i like especially the swordsman, but i would suggest a simple improvement that would make your spearman a very beautifull unit - a longer mail shirt so it would fit with the units created by sandris, it seems to me me legs are a little bare...they had at leats some garnment that was longer...evrything else seems to be ok the helmet is ok, even the shield and the spear, but please add a longer mailshirt....pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaase

Great units Plotinus.

Re the date order, It's not just Europe, in New Zealand we write it like England too. Australia is probably the same. I think any country that uses British English writes it that way. Conversly here in Korea, where I am now, they write it the reverse (reverse of British English) 2011.05.31.

... Which makes excellent sense: dates entered in this fashion will be properly sorted by a computer in chronological or reverse chronological order.

Basically, every country other than the US (and anywhere else where they speak American) writes the date with the day first, which is surely the logical way of doing it. I don't know why Americans put the month before the day but the year last - I suppose for the same reason they write the flat number after the street number, but before the town, when writing addresses on letters.

I live in London - but I am not a Londoner!

Awesome! Does this mean an update to Rood?

Yes, it's on its way. I found there were still a couple of unit niches where there wasn't quite the right graphic to fill them, hence these.

I'm sure that Sandris has some units like that - I wanted to make one dressed the same as the soldiers in the Bayeux Tapestry, who don't wear long shirts.

i do not want to argeu but the bayeaux tapesry can only limited be viewed as a source of inspiration, made 5 years after the battle by women in normandy, so i do not say they did not know how a soldier looked like, they were not interested by that....
i can send u some osprey pictures if u want...i have quite a few

are those saxons defending a wooden earth fortification??? who will ever know??

The Bayeux Tapestry was made in England - but wherever it was made, I'm sure the people doing it knew what knights of their time wore. At any rate, I don't have time to make any variations on these units, I'm afraid.

I would suggest that the women of Normandy would be very interested in the soldiers of the time ;).
