My answers

Spoiler :
What got you interested in mafia?
It was awhile ago... I think I just wandered into Forum Games one day and thought "Hey, this looks cool!" and voila. Now you're stuck with me, and I'm impossible to miss.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?
I honestly don't know what number one would be. The top three, in no particular order, were probably:

  • Camikaze's LOTR Mafia
  • ATPG's ATPG Mafia II
  • ATPG's Star Wars: Fall of the Order
  • Backward Logic's NOTW: Impending Retribution
Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?
1. Night of the Mindworms
2. NOTW: An End to War
3. Any Speed Mafia game
4. Impending Retribution (in the sense of appearing to be innocent, only)

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?
For small games - 24 hours; for large games - 48 hours.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?
Mafia.

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?
1. Miller
2. survivor with no abilities

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?
:dunno: I don't know if I've ever gotten one of those roles that was just "OH SWEET JESUS THIS IS AWESOME!", although I've received roles that I've thoroughly enjoyed playing. The serial killer in Night of the Mindworms was a lot of fun, as was the rogue in Impending Retribution.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?
I have to actively try to look unsuspicious (I'll elaborate later on), or else I look suspicious. That's why I'm lynched more often as town than when I'm mafia.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?
Refute their claims using evidence from the thread, or my own arguments.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?
It's really, really, difficult and rare to do so. Generally, you have to refute the claims that caused the bandwagon against you, and in turn make a case on another player convincing enough to start a counter-wagon strong enough to save your own hide.

How do you successfully accuse people?
Make a case with evidence from the thread, private interactions (if any), and pointing out behavior that is obviously scummy. You also have to say it boldly, with confidence, in a convincing manner, or else people won't follow you. It also definitely doesn't hurt to have a good track record of catching scum, or to be well-known among the community.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?
Besides being inactive, inactive, a lurker, or just plain unskilled/unknown? Not really, although acting really suspicious certainly decreases your chances of getting nightkilled... but increases your chances of getting lynched. Generally being quieter helps the most, and being active and successful helps the least. It's a balance -- often actions that would make you more likely to be lynched make you less likely to be nightkilled, and vice-versa.

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?
Not that I know of, I don't think there's really any consistent pattern of early lynches. Except, acting silly is a good way to get votes on you.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?
Scan people who you think are suspicious or who you're working with (to check them out), but who aren't likely to be lynched right away. Confide your scan results with someone(s) you trust (someone you scanned innocent, for instance), so they can reveal those results should you die. Don't reveal publicly unless you're about to get lynched, or if you've found a mafia who's doing a lot of damage to the town and avoiding suspicion. Don't waste your scans on inactives, and beware that your scans might not be 100% accurate. Try to make a case on someone you scan as mafia that is convincing enough to get them lynched, before you reveal your identity.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?
Get in contact with other players so you know who is likely to be attacked, what's going on behind the scenes, and all that. Don't protect someone you see as suspicious. Hopefully you can find a town leader to take orders from. Reveal yourself only to people you trust, and avoid doing it publicly.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?
Target suspicious people. Try to make a case on a blocked player without revealing yourself, if possible. Also, be wary that someone might still be a bad dude, even if your block doesn't produce any obvious results. On the flip side, be wary that someone might still be innocent, even if your block may seem to indicate otherwise.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?
Kill, kill, kill, kill. Kill always, every night target who you think is most suspicious. The vig kill is a second lynch, only it's in the hands of one innocent instead of everyone (like the lynch, which includes the bad guys).

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?
Put yourself on the front lines. Act boldly, take risks, don't be afraid to do anything. Like it or not, you are expendable.

When should you roleclaim, and why?
When you're about to get lynched (publicly), or if someone is a known innocent or you trust them (privately).

What is "scummy", exactly?
I'd like to answer this question and the next some other time.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)
See above.

How do you play when you're mafia?
I actively try to look unsuspicious, avoiding behavior typically perceived as scummy like the plague. Make it look like you're townie. Before you do something, ask yourself, "Would I do/say this if I was a townie? Could this be seen as scummy? Could this come back to haunt me?" At the same time, don't be afraid to gamble and take calculated risks. A success brought on by a huge gamble is infinitely more satisfying than a success brought on by playing it safe.

What defines a good player?
Someone who is active and does their best to achieve victory and have fun. Also is respectful of other players, doesn't spam excessively, and has at least a little skill.

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?
See above.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?
Can he be trusted to not make too many significant mistakes? What's his reputation? How are his write-ups? How many games as he hosted, and how successful were those games? How quickly do players sign up for a game he/she opens sign-ups for?

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?
If it's interesting, if I have time for it, and the host.

What is balanced?
Some people say balance is the illusion of equal chances at victory, but I disagree. I believe that balance is giving all teams relatively equal chances at achieving victory.

How do you balance your games?
Following these guidelines, as well as using my own experience as a player and a host to judge whether or not the game is balanced. For me, it's something that's hard to put into words; as you become more experienced, it just becomes easier to tell what is and is not balanced.

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?
Lots of players, lots of activity (not even necessarily lots of posts, but lots of behind-the-scenes action, quality posts, no inactives/lurkers), an interesting premise, an awesome role, a perfectly balanced setup, and an awesome host.

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?
  • NOTWs are typically, but not always, set in the Fall From Heaven universe.
  • NOTWs have rules that are more set in stone (such as no talking at night or if you're dead).
  • NOTWs have more roleplay.
That's pretty much it, IMO.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?
Large.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?
It depends on the length and quality, as well as what stage of the game (is something important going on?) and how much time I have at the moment.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?
It depends on the game. Generally, I like private communication in large games, but not small. I also am not a fan of allowing players to create their own QTs.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?
I don't really care, honestly.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?
I think players should be allowed to quote PMs to their heart's content, but prohibited from quoting host PMs. (Be careful what you say in a PM!)

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?
Yes in large games, no in small.

What is your stance on cover roles?
Unless there is a very good reason not to, cover roles should always be provided.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?
"Cool, I can be really active and put myself on the front lines with no fear this game!"

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?
More complex, but not overwhelmingly so.

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?
:dunno:

Spoiler :
What got you interested in mafia?
I've been playing it for a while now. I think I originally got into it because I like trying to figure out what other people are thinking.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?
There have been a lot of good ones, but I really liked ATPG's The Dark Knight Begins.

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?
Chaotix's Council of Villains: A State of Corruption. I was Captain Falcon and feel I was a big part of the town's victory that time.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?
I like 48 hours more.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?
I love being the traitor, someone who can be converted by the mafia.

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?
Probably just a vanilla townie.

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?
The Joker in ATPG's Dark Knight.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?
That I have yet to figure out. :p Usually when I look suspicious, I get lynched no matter how hard I try, mafia or innocent.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?
By not taking it personally and just looking at it as an improvement.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?
Not very good at this one either. I try to point out that there's more than one suspicious person, because there usually is, even though people want to take the easy way out.

How do you successfully accuse people?
By examining everything and building a really good case.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?
Not really.

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?
Don't be good enough to get metagame-killed. :p

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?
Scan the people no one would think to look for. That usually works for me.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?
Although it might be good to just protect confirmed innocents, that's not always what you should do. Protect someone who's slipped up, but it's not too obvious. Someone who you have a gut feeling is going to need your help.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?
If you have a bad feeling about someone's role, see if there's one less kill if they're blocked.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?
Don't go all "Rambo" and kill everyone. Only attack the scummy people.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?
Try your best to examine the thread and look for voting patterns and behavior.

When should you roleclaim, and why?
Only when you're important and the fate of the game depends on it.

What is "scummy", exactly?
Someone who's acting against the town for whatever reason.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)
PIS, voting with a scum, using your abilities to harm other innocents, keeping secrets from the town.

How do you play when you're mafia?
I do my best to mimic my behavior as a vanilla townie.

What defines a good player?
Someone who's always looking to improve and have fun with the game.

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?
Activity and excitement with the game.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?
Punctuality and experience.

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?
A clear explanation of the rules and a teaser that gets me ready for the game.

What is balanced?
A game that can be won by either side.

How do you balance your games?
Say, "If I was this player, could I win?"

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?
A game in which everyone can have fun and feels like they should participate.

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?
Roleplaying and in most cases the Fall from Heaven universe.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?
Large games.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?
Most of the time I skim, but if I really like the writing style, I'll read it.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?
It should be allowed.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?
Depends on the game and the amount of roleplay expected.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?
Don't do it.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?
It kinda ruins the game.

What is your stance on cover roles?
Use them only if it's a large game.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?
Honestly, a bit disappointed.

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?
The more complex, the better.

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?
I'm fine with the game as it is right now.

The Questions (formatted for easy response)

What got you interested in mafia?
Earthling invited me for those darn states. I was too quiet in that game and I didn't actually research my role because I didn't want spoilers on Dune, which I haven't read yet :p.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?
Hmmm....I really appreciated Earthling's those darn states for it's general balance and it's complexity. Most people had something to do.

Pretty much every NOTW is very good. I don't think I've had a gripe with a NOTW's design.

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?
Every game ;). I have the philosophy that it isn't actually hard at all to be a good player. And good logic leading to bad results is still good play.

Actually, I just can't exactly remember details of many games.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?
depends on size of game/activity of players. 48 at the start, then with <20 people I would prefer to see 24 hour days.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?
? Is this supposed to be for a particular game? Anyways, I do like having one big mafia team when done appropriately--I think the first chronomancy NOTW there were like 5 of us chronomancers and there weren't other scum nightkilling. For a generic mafia, I like seeing a team that can work together, as well as allow the town to figure them out.

Actually now that I read this is means mafia in general lol--but, I still answer the same. "Vanilla" mafia is a good role for everyone to play.

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?
Vanilla townie in games with no reveals.

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?
I liked being the serial killer Rathus Denmora in a NOTW.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?
logic.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?
logic.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?
you don't. Einstein once said that the most powerful force in the universe is a illogical bandwagon.

How do you successfully accuse people?
logic.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?
be on their team. In seriousness, yes

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?
Yeah--be less scummy than someone else.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?
stay alive.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?
I don't think I have been a doctor.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?
Target scummy people.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?
Don't kill until you see the whites of their scum.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?
Do whatever you want first five days, then reflect very carefully on voting patterns.

When should you roleclaim, and why?
Depends on your role, but if you are non-important you should be willing to say everything in private so as to form a townie alliance.

What is "scummy", exactly?
Everyone who isn't me.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)
-snrubbing
-trying to subtley insert stuff that isn't important (I remember when I was rathus denmora the two mafia factions were cultists and invaders iirc. The invaders kept emphasizing the existance of the cultist, and I was like the only person in the game thread that kept on saying the invaders existed)

How do you play when you're mafia?
Be active and happily lynch people.

What defines a good player?
Being active and reading. Literally that is my only requirement.

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?
Activity.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?
A well designed game, and promptness in clearing up rules/posting updates. Posting updates aren't important, but keeping deadlines relatively tight (if you say day is 24 hours, but you don't have time for the update, make the day 24 hours still and just post you'll write the update later)

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?
Nothing special.

What is balanced?
Mafia has the tools to win, and townies have the opportunity to figure things out.

How do you balance your games?
Hmm, well I haven't hosted one of my own yet but just think about it.

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?
I think perhaps my game that I will host, archetype mafia. NOTWs have been better than mafia recently since mafia games have drifted into more and more vanilla roles and trying to do "twists".

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?
NOTW has more lore that can be translated into game knowledge, and NOTW typically have better item systems.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?
large.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?
Depends on what my role is/if I care. But nah, I skim them.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?
Allow it.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?
I don't care. Bold and vote. If I were to host, just make a spreadsheet of all the players and when you say "voting is done" go backwards from your own post and once you read a person's vote, enter it in the spreadsheet. Doesn't matter if they voted 20 times, there last vote is the first one you read.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?
I wouldn't allow it.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?
I wouldn't allow direct quoting.

What is your stance on cover roles?
It's fine.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?
Depends on the game.

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?
Very complex.

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?
Make large mafia games 25+ at the very least

Spoiler, because the goggles do nothing.

Spoiler :
What got you interested in mafia?

People kept spamming me with advertisements and this was the only way I could make them shut up with the advertisements already.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?

The Legend of Zelda- War of Hyrule

I didn't have to work as hard as I did in Capo III, but there was still much glory to be had, and the ending was perhaps my favorite ending of all time.

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?

I hope you don't mind, but I've been in like 100 games so can I do a few?

The Org:

The Council of Villains- However, I was given a role that was obviously overpowered. That was a crutch. The "good" play was requesting the exact text of a detective result on someone that was passed off as clean, but when I re-read it, I decided it wasn't clean. Then we lynched that guy. Other good play was maintaining a pro-town network and protecting the important people involved for most of the game, if not all of it, at a time when the consensus was networks were huge security hazards, open to infiltration, and would result in town defeat almost every time. This game reversed the trend at long last, and I had a big hand in that, but it was definitely a team effort.

Mass Effect Mini Mafia- It was a mini game so not that much effort required. I successfully reversed some early pressure with scapegoats. But the really "good" play was using my scum-hunting skills as a scumbag to locate my unknown partner. Neither of us could murder, so we were outnumbered and divided by the town, and no stronger than any of the townies individually. Finding him was game-winning. I was so confident that it was him, I posted a big fat case explaining how guilty he was and why he was guilty, and then confessed to being evil in front of everyone, with the game on the line. Had I been wrong, I would have lost the game. It's called bravado!

Hitman's Gambit- In terms of pure evil, this is the one game where Askthepizzaguy becomes a Super-Saiyan. At only 160 posts and two rounds of play, you'd better freaking read it!

Plot summary: Two rival hitmen on a mission to eliminate a certain townie target, and the other hitman. They are given a limited bank account which can perform any action, the more powerful the action, the more expensive it is. They can perform multiple actions per night. The other hitman can see exactly what actions are being purchased, so you have to be careful not to give anything away. The townies are given an investigator who can locate the hitmen, and they outnumber the hitmen, who are already handicapped because they face each other in a race to avoid death and cause their target to die. Game begins with a night phase. N1, I spend money looking only for the other hitman, which is a limited detective scan. I scan myself, and a couple other people. I happen to find the other hitman, and the other hitman thinks that his rival is not Pizza because his rival scanned pizza to find out if Pizza was the other hitman, so.... anyway. I'm scanned by the detective on N1 and found out by the townies before play even really begins. What follows is what happens to Askthepizzaguy when he's found out as scum on N1 and decides he wants revenge. Enjoy.

Socially unacceptable Mini-Mafia- This is the game that earned me the nickname "Diamond Junk", even though I lost. I was a psychotic serial killer, and here's how I hid from the townies who were basically nothing but roleblockers who could prevent me from killing: I immediately confessed to being a psychotic serial killer, but claimed I was still townie because it is socially unacceptable to be a psychopath. It was too outrageous to be a lie! So they let me kill off whoever I wanted as their vigilante. Some people were so convinced by my performance, that they cursed out the townie responsible for my death, and the moderators had to get involved. Ain't I a stinker?

Capo di Tutti Capo III- 76 players. The game wherein I'm a neutral guy on a mission to kill the communist (cult-like) team before the FBI does. Only, instead, I work with the FBI to help bring down the five mafia families and "do the townies a solid" before finishing off the communist cult. This is the game where I took pro-town networking to its maximum power level, and I ended up killing directly, lynching, or directing the vigilante killings of most of the baddies in the game. I emerged with my "lucky" still intact, and my body unscathed, somehow. And yes, I whipped their commie butts.

Swords and D20's- The City of Doors- The one wherein I am LEEEEEEROY JENKINNNNNNNSSSSSSS and we win, just barely. Well, I wasn't Leeroy Jenkins, but I pretended I was, and people believed me.

Pick your power small mafia- First day, I ask that they lynch Khaan, who was mafia. Soon thereafter, I call out Andres on being total scum, and lay out my case. He dies, he was mafia, and he suicide bombs me in retaliation, proving me innocent and bulletproof, but I die anyway. Finally, I trick Beskar into voting for the retaliatory townie, which wins the game, because he was a double-voter and would have won if he had voted for anyone else besides that guy or himself. So 3/3.

The Shadow Fort- The one wherein I am turned into a vampire just as my master is slain, leaving me basically alone in a game full of detectives, vigilantes, doctors, and a massive cult-like mafia team. There was much death. The one wherein I confess to being a demon, and they lynch White_eyes anyway.

Star Wars- Return of the Sith- The one wherein I become the Grandmaster of the Order and fight off the two remaining sith by myself. I also have a big badass argument with Tincow about how guilty Psychonaut was, which proved how stubborn we both were, but this time, I was actually right! Yay, that makes 1 for ..... however many other times I've debated with Tincow. One! Woot!

The trouble in waiting- After a rocky start, I nail both mafia. And nobody listens. The one wherein I TOLD YOU SO, I FREAKING TOLD YOU SO.

Parasite: Earthbound- The one wherein I'm a big badass alien who is just trying to figure out his origins... and I try to help the hyoo-mons in the process, but they turn against me, and I try to help the evil aliens, but they also turn against me. Then, I get mad and the bad things start to happen....

Order of the Stick- The one wherein I trick the mafia into confessing who they are and all their weaknesses. It had to sting, so I'll not rub it in. Let's move on...

Buffyverse- The one wherein I'm a vigilante and the only things I kill are mafia, over, and over, and over, and over.... until we win.

Council of Villains- State of Corruption- The one wherein I'm a serial killer on a mission to kill both mafia godfathers. I can actually win with the town if I do. I manage to bring down one mafia godfather, and expose their team's hidden message system, and I also help bring down one of the other team's goons, while connecting the townie's main investigators with their doctors, before SOME PARANOID TOWNIES (and the team whose Godfather I helped bring down) decided I was not trustworthy enough to leave alive, even though I was pwning the mafia for them and I helped spare the lives of several townie investigators.

I lost, but man, it sure felt like winning.

The Campground- The one wherein I completely suck, until the final two rounds. :D Oh, also, everyone knows for sure I'm guilty, except I'm not, and then I do this post which is possibly the most epic post of all time.

Visions of the Animus- The one wherein I nail Kagemusha on the first real day of the game based on his behavior alone, but I am lynched instead, and then I work by myself in my own quicktopic to determine who his mafia buddies are, and I work out who 2 out of 3 of them are by the third day. :D

Total War Center-

Jubal's A game of Mafia- I was by myself for half the game with an inactive partner, got investigated by Captain Blackadder, and threw enough wine in front of everyone to sneak my replacement partner past the goal. Town inactivity helped, but I did my part.

Hitchhiker's Guide....- The one wherein I'm a detective and claim bulletproof on the first day, asking to be investigated on the first night, so that the mafia families and the serial killer don't kill me, so I can investigate and nail them all... It works, and I nail most of their scummy butts and town ekes out a win. I die eventually, but man, WORTH IT!!!

Beer Mafia- I was beertastic.

Bad Idea Mini Mafia- The one wherein I personally, single-handedly, kill a mafioso on the FIRST SECOND OF THE GAME. Check the timestamps, b's. Later I tell Rob_the_Celt he should kill Stildawn, and he does, and we win.

The Legend of Zelda- Lover Victory in a huge game. Oh the carnage, the betrayal, and the pile of dead cultists all screaming for my head. Delicious.

CFC:

I did okay in a couple of the NOTW's I was in, and I won a couple of the large mafia games. I think my better performance was in the NOTW where I was a witch doctor. That was the good one.

And for each one of these games of pure pwnage, I have many more wins of a mediocre or unspectacular nature, and a whoooooooooole lot of fail. So I'm not bragging, I'm highlighting. ;)

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?

48 hours.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?

Vigilante, due to its double-edged nature. Be the hero, or be the idiot who messes up your whole team's chances.

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?

True alignment scanners. Total cheat!

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?

The CIA role in Capo di Tutti Capo III, tied with the Kafei/King Dodongo role in Zelda.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?

By being mafia.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?

By killing mafia.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?

Through sheer testicular fortitude.

How do you successfully accuse people?

Throw the kitchen sink at them and show people why they're scummy. The why is very important. Being right helps, and being able to argue aggressively helps.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?

Be lynch bait: Do some bad lynches, and get some pressure on you. Be on the verge of death and generally be ineffective at lynching the scums. I know I'm playing a bad game when I'm townie and I'm still alive at the end. That means I haven't made the mafia fear me. It makes me saddeded.

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?

Don't ever go inactive and allow yourself to be wogged. Don't go inactive at the end of a game especially. Vote every round. People will value your life as a potential teammate over a lurker who lets the team down every game. It's worth losing the 1 game out of 10 to an active pizzaguy who has earned the win, because I'll actually be a helpful townie at least 5 out of the remaining 9 other games (I also have a good townie record). The key is to be active, to vote, to discuss, and to try. You don't do those things, you're early game lynch fodder, and you deserve it.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?

Investigate anyone who is unlikely to be lynched or murdered soon. Someone no one considers a threat. That way when you reveal your results, they will reveal info about living people, not corpses.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?

Protect the accusative talkers. They'll get lynched anyway if they're mafia. They're your main offensive weapon if they're townie.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?

Same as when you're an investigator, and reveal when the kill count drops, assuming it doesn't drop on the second or third night. Take a risk and block 4-5 people before revealing. It's less useful, less effective, and less accurate than a detective scan, so no biggie if you get killed, as long as you made the kills drop once, that's an extra townie's life you just saved.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?

Be the second lynch, kill whoever the town suspects is guilty. That way you can explain your actions as vigilantism, not serial killing.

Kill every night, unless there are likely doctors or detectives in the game. Then, you might consider abstaining from killing until you have a better idea who needs to die.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?

Be active, be accusatory, and accuse everyone in the game, one person at a time. Don't back down on your accusation unless you legitimately feel someone else is scummier. That way, it can be traced back, that you were really trying to lynch certain folks early on, and are thus unlikely to be their mafia partner. Give reasons for your vote. Lie and pretend to be a townie power role. Try to get murdered, that's your function. Get murdered and be proven innocent, so your accusations are coming from a known townie.

Don't eat a lynch.

When should you roleclaim, and why?

Very situational. No generic answer.

What is "scummy", exactly?

Scummy is how you're behaving, no matter how you're behaving.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)

I'll decline to respond to this for now. Maybe later.

How do you play when you're mafia?

Very well, thank you.

What defines a good player?

Someone who shows up and tries, and understands the criticism they're subjected to.

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?

Someone who shows up and tries, and understands the criticism they're subjected to.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?

Someone who shows up and tries, and understands the criticism they're subjected to.

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?

Either a sterling reputation for hosting awesome games, or a well-defined game concept that seems balanced and interesting.

What is balanced?

1 mafioso (1 family) per 5-8 townies, with one murder each, reveals on death.
2 mafiosi (1 family) per 10-25 townies, with one murder each, reveals on death.
3 mafiosi (1 family) per 26-40 townies, with one murder each, reveals on death.
4 mafiosi (1 family) per huge game, 3 murders, reveals on death.

Adjust for additional families, adjust for no reveals on death.

For every townie power role of significant worth (doc, blocker, vig, etc), the mafiosi must have a way of countering that power or they must have a cover role/power of their own. Adjust per games which are more complex.

2 mafia families will oppose and destroy each other, regardless of the size of the town, but the town should always be significantly larger than the mafia families. 2 families is harder on the mafia than 1 family, because of the risk of murder death.

Serial killers require compensation for the risk of being murdered or lynched, and perhaps should not be expected to survive the entire game to win it.

How do you balance your games?

Very carefully.

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?

30-60 players and I live for more than a couple rounds, with an interesting story and a balanced setup. That's all, really.

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?

NOTW gives each player a unique character, side quests, items, goals, and there's usually a backstory for the universe they're in. Sometimes there are completely new kinds of roles.

Mafia games are more basic, although they can be themed, and usually do not involve items, sidequests, and although there can be unique characters, the roles are often standard/cookiecutter (mafia, doctor, detective).

Mafia games, you can win even if you're dead and can usually talk while dead. NOTW you usually lose when you're dead and must remain silent when dead.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?

Large.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?

Depends on how interesting they are.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?

Depends on the game, usually I encourage it.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?
Vote: Player
Unvote, vote: Player

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?

It allows mass reveals of roles, which can allow the game to be solved without much effort unless the host prepared plausible cover roles for the mafia. It's supposed to be a game of limited information, not a jigsaw puzzle with the pieces facing up.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?
That's sort of meta-gaming. I don't like it.

What is your stance on cover roles?

Very good idea. Always have one ready to go.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?

Goody, less pressure, and I can lie my butt off. I can try to get murdered, yay!

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?

Somewhat complex, but vanilla is fun. Too complex makes me groan.

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?

We should get free pizza with every game.

Spoiler :
The Questions (formatted for easy response)

What got you interested in mafia?
I saw this name in someone's signature, then looked at the forums... it seemed to be fun. I PM'ed Zack and asked him "How I can become a mafia player?" :D
Then, I played as a replacement in the Martians themed game. And it was so funny!

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?
It was not typical mafia, but was very fun - Otto Ngoogol or something like that. Also, for other reasons, ATPG's Star - Wars themed game on other forum was fun (sorry I do not remember names of games well)

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?
Don't think so, nothing speciacl.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?
24 hours, maybe 48 for really big games. But then I will prefer 2 parts of day - like it was, IIRC in "ganglands"

What is your favorite generic mafia role?
Vigilante - killing, being one's own master, and on the same time not being alone in your team

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?
vanilla survivor

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?
It was it Otto Ngoogol game. But in this fgame, I participated in writing exactly this kind of role that i wanted
Also very good game I had as a policeman at mafia.org
How do you successfully look unsuspicious?
I do not know. I try to behave 'normally'

How do you successfully respond to criticism?
I try not to. If it is 'in-game' criticism, I try to explain myself if I feel it is worth it. If it is getting personal, I stop communicating

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?
I do not, I think. I will try probably by starting or joining another one. Sometimes, by role revealing

How do you successfully accuse people?
Most times, I find somethin suspicious in their posts

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?
Being inactive? I do not try to. Especially not when I am a townie

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?
Low activity - voting, one or two comments. But it is seldom not worth trying.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?
Scanning someone not going to be lynched, so I have someone I can send results of future scans to. Then, scanning someone going to be lynched, to see if I scan accurately

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?
protect active players. Wait for someone revealing his role

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?
block suspicious people. Look at night results.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?
kill, kill, kill. It is like additional lynch at your disposal. Kill the person who seems most scummy to you. When not sure, kill anyway - it is better than letting mafia kill you.
Of course, if possible, team with a scanner for maximum effectiveness

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?
be active

When should you roleclaim, and why?
when you are at risk of being lynched, sometimes when you have an important knowledge that you want to share

What is "scummy", exactly?
Everything could be. More serious: it can be acting different than normal, protecting yourself very strongly, having a lot of knowledge about mechanics of curent game

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)
I messed it witj previous question :)

How do you play when you're mafia?
I try to play 'as normal' at forum. During night, I try either to kill active, important players, or players that

What defines a good player?
activity, being nice to others, trying to play well, learning from mistakes and other's suggestions

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?
mostly activity. also, abiding the rules

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?
reliability, trying not to make mistakes, answering questions quickly

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?
interesting setting, interesting idea

What is balanced?
game in which every side has a chance for victory, as equal as possible

How do you balance your games?
I try to play them in my imagination. I imaguine different possible situations and then try to assess chances of every side for winning.
Or... I ask ATPG for help ;)

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?
Game for 20 - 30 people, that is rather slow (not many kills. maybe sometimes wounds instead of death), and in which players can develop their characters; I also prefer games where not too much is hidden from players - I do not like games when most of important, new mechanics is hidden from majority, I also do not like games with too much twists

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?
I do not know, I play my first NOTW now

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?
I prefer "medium" games - 18-25 people seems best for me

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?
I read them. But sometimes they do not add much to the enjoyment from game

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?
I prefer when lot of things is going in the main thread

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?
vote: Jarrema
unvote; vote: Jarrema

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?
Not allow this.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?
Not allowed

What is your stance on cover roles?
If game is in some kind of setting (like movie-based for example), cover roles should be provided

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?
I think how to make this game fun for me. It is fun, because I do not feel burden of responsibility and can do silly things

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?
less complex, but not VERY simple

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?
??

Spoiler :
What got you interested in mafia?

I forget. Had been playing RFMK III and decided, 'meh, why not?' Been playing on and off ever since.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?

It's tough because I've played in so many. I can't really pick one. Pinman's NOTW XIX stands out as spectacular, Niklas' Castle Stonemoor was a blast to play in, and TheForestAuro's NOTW XXXI was a great unorthodox game with multiple factions all against each other. It's a shame we've lost Catharsis's NOTW XVI: Operation Enduring Freedom - it was my first game overall, I played as a wolf (mafia) and we steamrolled everyone. That game was a blast.

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?

Three standout. One was Chandrasekhar's NOTW XIV, where Renata, Methos, Oyzar, and myself almost self-destructed on our way onto eventual victory. To this day, I've never been as sucked into a game as that one. We made a number of wrong calls, but we pulled it out eventually. Another was Niklas's aforementioned Castle Stonemoor, where I pretty much pulled out a solo victory after being converted midway throughout the game. I'd say it was my first real test as a mafia player, and it's something I'm still proud of. Lastly, TheForestAuro's NOTW XXXI might be my crowning achievement - along with Renata and eventually Methos and Diamondeye, we outmaneuvered Earthling and company to victory. I wasn't always 100% correct, but we made the right moves when we had to during a fairly flawless game.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?

48 hours. 24 is too short, 72 too long.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?

Something with an interesting backstory/PG I can ham up and play around with. Preferably with a kill ability

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?

Easy: A role with no abilities or useful items and a totally unobtainable PG (unobtainable meaning it relies solely on luck (keep 'player A' alive)). Might as well be mafia fodder.

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?

Being Captain of the Nightwatch in TFA's NOTW XXXI. That was a total blast and challenge to play.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?

pffft, I ain't sharing trade secrets! :p

How do you successfully respond to criticism?

I don't think I've ever truly been criticized. Not sure how to answer this one.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?

Depends on the situation. Either 1) Shoot down the prevailing bandwagon with a heavy dose of logic and/or 2) Present a more 'suitable' kill target for the mob's wrath.

How do you successfully accuse people?

Just have all of my ducks in a row before I go in. Having an argument is one thing; being able to defend it is an entirely different animal.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?

Well, given my history here, no, I don't think so.

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?

Be active, but not too active to appear 'jumpy.' I did that in NOTW XVII - gave the wolves an easy bandwagon target early because I thought lynching anyone on the first day was ludicrous. It was a different time back then. Killing = good thing regardless.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?

Lay low, scan your targets wisely, and go through a conduit to reveal. Build the townie network slowly.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?

I've never had the misfortune of landing that role. I can't comment, other than the duh 'protect the prophet' move.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?

It's a dangerous role - hit the wrong guy and you lose a powerful anti-mafia ability. Hit the right guy and you *might* have a killer. That said, I've never played one, but I suspect being part of the townie network would be beneficial (as to not step on anyone's toes).

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?

Kill the guys everyone else thinks is a bad guy. Helps with the whole 'I'm really not a serial killer, I swear!' defense.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?

Accuse everyone. It's fun!

When should you roleclaim, and why?

Very specific. Depends entirely on the situation and the game's past events.

What is "scummy", exactly?

Doing something that can be considered 'anti-town.' Everyone usually has some degree of scumminess, just some more than others.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)

I know it when I see it. Can't really define it.

How do you play when you're mafia?

Again, not sharing trade secrets.

What defines a good player?

Showing up and trying. Pretty much it.

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?

Activity, first and foremost. Second, actually contributing to the game in a positive way. Inactivity sucks - been there, seen that, and it ain't cool.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?

Timely updates. Update when you say you will, and be consistent with all decisions. Don't do or say anything that can jeopardize anyone's chances at anything. An interesting setup is a plus, not a must. Hosts with track-records of kick-ass games usually get my sign-up, as I'm insanely busy nowadays. Of course, that means I miss out on new games by new players introducing new fresh ideas. Wish I had the time to play them all.

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?

An intriguing storyline, something to keep the pace moving along. I for one like games with some sort of plot to them, not just the classic 'find the mafia before they all kill you' vanilla styles out there.

What is balanced?

Balanced is really more of an idea than a 'what.' Actually, it's the ideal for a mafia game, where, when all things considered, each side as an equal chance of winning at the onset. It's easy to spot games that are not balanced, it's very hard to spot games that 100% are. Personally, I don't think it's possible (at least not in NOTW), it just has to be close enough.

How do you balance your games?

In a nutshell, I look at things from every angle and determine how the ruleset can be circumvented in such a way that can break the game for one side or the other. It's all about being honest with oneself during the design phase. It's not easy, but sometimes that awesome mechanic you had lined up just doesn't gel with the other team(s) properly and needs to be tweaked.

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?

30+ players, well-hosted, fantastic storyline, interesting writeups, and everyone's active and contributes. It'll never happen.

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?

NOTW has roleplay, Mafia I'd argue does not. NOTW's usually are a little more in-depth when it comes to items, PG's, backstories and the like, but that's not to say they're more complex as well.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?

Large games. It seems small games are over before they even begin.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?

Honestly, it depends on the host. If there's some effort being put into it, I'll read it. If it's a one sentence afterthought, I skip to the spoiler.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?

I'm ambivalent. On one hand, I don't post much in thread usually, so I rely on outside communication. On the other, not allowing it means all communication has to be in-thread, which is a double-edged sword. If I had to choose between yes or no to private chats, I'd say yes to it.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?

Simple bold works. Items just need color. It's worked since the start on NOTW; we don't need the OOC vote: tag thrown in there too. What's the deal with that anyway? :p

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?

Hell no. Private conversations are just that - private. I hate when my conversations get posted. Better yet, I hate when they get altered. By allowing this, what exactly are we trying to accomplish exactly?

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?

See above. Game is more or less broken from a playability standpoint that's within the 'spirit' of the game. May the best metagamer win. I won't play.

What is your stance on cover roles?

Depends on the game. Themed games need them more than more vanilla games, as metagaming like it or not plays a large role. Creating your own cover for a NOTW is fun, so unless there's a really strong theme players can metagame I don't think NOTW's need them 'assigned' from the onset. For a great player created cover role, see CCRunner's cover in NOTW XXXIX. It was fantastic and worked. That's the kind of stuff that's awesome to see imo.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?

Depends on my mood. If I want a challenge, I'm disappointed. If I have no time and want something low-stress and high-fun, I love it. Just don't give me a crappy PG, m'kay?

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?

More complex. Deciphering new mechanics can be fun and interesting, but only if the host has really thought things through. Too complex can pose problems to more-casual players. I personally don't mind it (as evidenced by my last hosting endeavor).

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?

Less spam in the games. I hate that. Let's keep things in-context and adhere to the spirit of the way things were meant to be played.

What got you interested in mafia?

I was wondering around Forum Games one day, many years ago, and thought "Oh that looks cool" and joined a game.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?

There's been so many it's hard to really pick a favorite. Camikaze's Lord of the Rings was an amazing game that kept me busy long after I died in it, and I was a powerful wizard, which was cool. remake and wew's War of Hyrule was also pretty fun, at least after I became Link. Backwards Logic's NOTW, Impending Retribution was one of the most fun games I've ever played in as an anti-townie. TFA's NOTW, It's A Long Story, with all its craziness, was loads of fun, and extremely well-crafted, as I assume Chronomancy was and Chronomancy Redux will be. Plus, it spawned the phrase "Diamondeye is a vampire!" Lastly, every game hosted by Askthepizzaguy. Only he could crome up with neutral llama scanners, Chainsaw-wielding maniacs, Jedi with the ability to run around and eventually get crushed to death, and vanilla townies and make them all be fun.

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?

I've played in a ton of games, it's hard to pick out just one. :p

Here's a few:

NOTW XXXVI: Night of the Mindworms

In this one, I was in a team with Kennigit, and we basically had a mission to convert people to our religion. We did a good job of that, and a good job of avoiding being killed. Eventually, we allied with Earthling and robbiecon, which for some reason nobody else wanted to do, and our 4-person team largely cruised to victory, defeating the Space Pirates, the Aliens, and the Mindworm, although we ended up being almost killed at the end by the Spartans.

NOTW XXXIX: Impending Retribution

The Saboteur team was so unbelievably epic here, and we would have been better if those Rogues hadn't killed TheForestAuro so fast. I managed to use my set of abilities and great BSing to fool many innocents into trusting me, even after getting blown up by that claymore, and managed to avoid being lynched for a long time. In the course of that time, I managed to convince the planter of the claymores to tell me where all of them were, aid in keeping the ship in a minefield for a week, get a repair/destroy item given to me, and find out the plans of several important innocents. I think the high point of this was when the innocent who had the most repair points per night flat-out told me his ability in a PM. Sadly, it couldn't last forever, and eventually, I was crushed under an innocent bandwagon, and my teammates were obvious lurkerscum. Still, it was fun while it lasted.

civplayah's Experimental Mafia II

I was the cop in this one. I was sort of clueless and wondering around for the first day, but after Takhisis died, I decided to scan robbiecon, one of his suspects, and got a mafia. I soon managed to get him lynched for being third on the bandwagon that lynched Takhisis, and proceeded to avoid dying for the rest of the game. I quickly figured out that robbiecon's partner could only be one of a few people, and it was almost certainly DaveShack. I was certain enough of this that I didn't even bother scanning him, and instead just randomly scanned some of the lesser suspects, in case I was wrong about DaveShack, or there were more than two mafia. Turned out I was right. It was almost funny that I got the cop role, because I easily figured out robbiecon and DaveShack's scumminess anyway, although the scan certainly helped. A well-played game, and I take pride in being largely responsible for handing robbie his first loss as mafia.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?

48 Hour Day Phases, 24 Hour Night Phases.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?

Mafia. Killing people and laughing at the townie sheep failing to notice me is fun.

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?

Doctor, because I always die before everyone else.

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?

That's a tough one. I'd have to say Vizzini, from Princess Bride Mafia, is my favorite, but there's several that are close.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?

It depends on what role I'm given, and whether I need to look unsuspicious. Generally, I just ask myself what I'd do if I didn't need to look unsuspicious.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?

If it's silly, I ignore it. If it's not silly, then it depends. If it's possible to debunk it, I do so. If it's not possible, I debunk it anyway, because doing the impossible in some games is surprisingly easy.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?

By ramming it with a bigger bandwagon.

How do you successfully accuse people?

Step 1: Collect Evidence
Step 2: Post Evidence Clearly
Step 3: Prepare For Hopeless Counter-argument, Debunk when posted
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit!
Step 6: Watch Bandwagon unfold, laugh maniacally (if mafia), laugh maniacally (if town), facepalm (if wrong about suspect)

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?

Being one of them certainly helps. :mischief:

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?

Be active in the early rounds, and don't do something that makes you an easy target.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?

Start by scanning one or two people at random. You probably won't have someone to seriously suspect this early in the game anyway. If they're mafia, good, you can lynch them. If they're innocent, also good, you have a couple of people you can trust and who can claim detective for you if they're unimportant and you need someone. Proceed to scan whoever looks suspicious, but avoid scanning the top living innocent suspect. In all likelyhood, they'll be dead soon anyway, regardless of whether they're innocent or not. If they're innocent, you could scan them to clear them, but that might not save them from being lynched anyway, and if it's revealed that they've been scanned, they'll quickly be nightkilled. Scan people a bit down on the list, who will be alive for awhile. You might find a mafia in there, hiding, and you can hasten their exit from life. Or you might find an innocent, and you can add them to your pool of "almost certainly innocents" to trust. If you find any of the other power roles, try to coordinate with them. Lastly, try to keep the fact that you are a detective hidden, for obvious reasons, and don't reveal unless you're about to be lynched, or it's very late in the game and you need to ensure the death of the last one or two scums, and remember that your scan might not be 100% accurate.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?

If someone looks likely to die and likely to be innocent, protect them, if you have nothing better to do. Be careful- you are always going to be priority number one on the mafia kill list. Protect the other innocent power roles if you find them, and have good reason to believe that they are who they say they are.

If your ability has no downsides, limits, etc., then you should be using it every night. Even at random, you're much more likely to protect an innocent than a mafia.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?

Block whoever you think is most likely to be mafia. Remember that your results aren't perfect- someone blocked on a night that there were fewer kills might not be a mafia, and someone blocked on a night with no kill drop could be a mafia. Don't reveal in public if you don't have to.

I'm afraid I don't have much experience here- the only time I've had a roleblock with more than one use was as a neutral survivalist.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?

Again- not much experience. I was a vigilante in War of Hyrule, but that was an ability I gained a few days after becoming a replacement player. And in that, I had so many cultists and mafia to kill, the townies couldn't have come close to winning if I wasn't killing every night anyway.

But back on topic. If you have a suspect, kill him. It will narrow the innocent suspect list down a bit, and give the mafia less scummy people to hide behind, even if he's innocent. But be careful with it- there are other powerful roles in the game, and you don't want to kill one of them. If there's a night in which you don't have any real solid suspects, you might want to avoid killing anyone.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?

Accuse everyone who looks suspicious. Vote every day. Try to get the mafia lynched. If you come into contact with one of the more important roles, try to cover for them, and be a human shield for them if necessary. Be the public face of the strong innocent group if you become aware of it. Die at some point, or survive to the end to lynch the final mafia, because they've already killed everyone else. You may only have one ability, but it can be the most powerful ability in the game.

When should you roleclaim, and why?

On the verge of being lynched, to save yourself and get the bandwagon off you and onto the obviousscum.

What is "scummy", exactly?

Diamondeye is scummy.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)

It varies from person to person, but generally, looking like you have something to hide, making consistently bad votes and doing things that don't look townie. Lastly, posting from a phone is always scummy. Always.

How do you play when you're mafia?

Like a boss.

What defines a good player?

Being active, voting, hunting for scum (as townie)
Being active, voting, killing townies (as mafia)
All of the above (as serial killer)

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?

Someone who will actively play the game, be a good sport, handle his role and the rules well, and not annoy other players.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?

Someone who makes interesting roles, well-balanced and crafted games, compelling storylines and write-ups, and ensures that the game is fun and winnable for all.

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?

Who's hosting it? Who's already signed up? How big? What's the story? Does it have any unusual game mechanics?

What is balanced?

When everyone has the possibility to win, and as close to even chances as possible.

How do you balance your games?

I have a Scale of Mafia Balance that I acquired by slaying the beast of bad games, and it usually works.

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?

30+ players, active in the thread and behind the scenes, fun game mechanics, good roles, good players, and good hosting.

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?

NOTW's have more roleplay, more unique characters, items, and abilities, and slightly different roles than Mafia. NOTW is also usually set in Fall From Heaven.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?

Large, generally.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?

As long as the host is reasonably competent, they're generally a great pleasure to read, and I almost always do so if I have time.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?

Allow it, usually. Maybe not in really small vanilla games, but most of the time, it greatly improves the game.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?

Just bold and color is fine. Vote tags are silly, and I really must get out of the habit of doing them all the time when I dont need to.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?

No quoting host PM's, as those are official and for one person's eyes only, generally, but go ahead and quote PM's of other players. There's no way to prove the quote is real or not, so it's not much different than just claiming someone said something in a PM to other players, which pretty much every game allows.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?

See "No quoting host PM's." I don't like the metagame aspect of doing this.

What is your stance on cover roles?

If there aren't any vanilla townies (or there are, but not very many), then the mafia must be given cover roles of some sort, especially if it's a game with non-original characters, in which the evil ones will be bloody obvious.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?

While I generally like roles with abilities more, I also like vanilla townies. It lets me be far more careless and do even crazier things than I normally do. Plus, I can go all-out trying to find the mafia and not care if they kill me. So, my reaction is a mixture of "Aw, I don't have any cool stuff" and "Time to kick butt and chew bubble gum, and my role didn't give me any bubble gum!"

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?

More complex, usually, but sometimes the simplest, most vanilla of games can be the most fun. I wouldn't have played so much speed mafia if not for that.

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?

Needs Moar Players.

I should also add that it's probably wise, if you're a roleblocker, not to do anything on the first night. See how many kills there are, and there's no risk of blocking a pro-town power role.

Shame on your for forgetting Paulus and whichever other of your accomplices got knocked off on night one. :p

The Questions (formatted for easy response)

What got you interested in mafia?

I wandered into forum games while Niklas' Castle Stonemoor was ongoing. Being on a CIV team with Niklas and Methos at the time, I followed along to see how it went, and signed up for the next one. (The great Song of the Nightengale.)

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?

Oh, god, too many to think about, and I'll probably miss a ton of good ones. I'm not in Pizzaguy territory quite, but I've probably played at least 50 of these suckers. Minus Song of the Nightengale (which HAS TO be here), I'll keep the ones where I was especially proud of my own play for the next question. Off the top of my head:

Song of the Nightengale by Pinman. An absolute classic with a completely original mafia mechanic I've never seen duplicated.

Border of Life by Chandrasekhar. A cut above in its complexity and storytelling. When a cabal of four not-half-bad players, all prophets of various types, mostly survive to endgame and it is STILL not a walkover, you know you've set the game up right.

Evil Dead II at SDMB. The moderator of this game has a flair for really creative roles, I got one of the best of them, and then it was one of those dream games (for the town) where everything just falls into place, all the right conclusions are drawn, and everything works.

Trouble in Waiting at the .org. Just because Woad&fangs and I shanghaied ATPG on our way to glorious mafia victoly.

Shadow Fort at the .org. Ok, so I had one of the game's worse roles. OK, so the town got pwned. And lest I forget, my townie hind end got freakin' vigged. It was still an amazing game. Multiple factions (town, "town" and otherwise), night orders for all, and it came down to a three-way showdown between uber-townie Sasaki, demon ATPG and recruited mafioso Joooray.

Is there a game you feel you played really well in (again, can be on or off site)?

Strangely, most of what's coming to mind are games where I was mafia or third party, despite that I think I'm a far better town player. Oh well, so be it.

Pinman's Song of the Nightengale. It was my first game ever, I was a wolf, and due to sheer blissful ignorance decided it would be fun to claim prophet. Somehow I got away with it, and went pretty much unsuspected until the last day, losing my shot at winning it all regardless when I guessed wrong on which player would be handed the Orb I needed to control.

Diamondeye's Making Money. I somehow BSed my way out of a drop-dead investigation result and to victory as mafia, the biggest (successful) effort I've ever had along those lines. Not the only time that a different non-town faction has come in handy as a scapegoat, though.

Backwards Logic's Impending Retribution. For once I managed to run a townie network almost openly for a good period of time, in part because my efforts were a large part of why the ship stayed afloat, and most of the mafias didn't want to go to the bottom. For their forbearance, that team was rewarded by being killed off entirely in the space of about a day and a half. Good times.

Askthepizzaguy's The Revengening, at the .org. I loved my third-party role in this game, and it's probably the best I've ever done in terms of night action decisions, choices of allies, and the like. I mostly played unafraid, which is hard for me, and for once it paid off handsomely. As in Making Money, scapegoating a fellow non-town was key, though in this case it was townie Ironside who did most of the heavy lifting.

Screamers Mafia at SDMB. WORST ROLE EVAR (secret scum), but with an pleasant result. Memorable primarily for two interlinked reasons. At the mass claim, I chose BOMB and somehow managed to avoid being lynched for the audacity, yet AGAIN scapegoating a fellow non-town (the serial killer), who managed to survive the lynch and wriggle out of suspicion himself. Then took advantage of townie confusion to leave the impression there was only one killer remaining, manipulating the numbers to go into the last night with me, SK, and two townies, all but me thinking they would be triggering the bomb for a victory the next day -- only to catch everybody out by killing the serial killer while he killed the more confirmed of the two townies, for the win.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?

I'm not picky, except that 24 hour day phases are hard on me when critical rounds fall on weekends.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?

Vigilante. I've never yet gotten that role, and actually killed anyone. This is something that must be rectified, are you listening random.org?

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?

Town roleblocker, I do more harm than good usually.

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?

Mace Windu in The Revengening.

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?

I have no idea, but I very rarely get lynched when innocent and not as often as I should as mafia either (absent an investigation result). I suppose I just have an innocent face.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?

By telling people they're wrong and repeating forcefully until they run away screaming.

Well not really. Having an alternate candidate for the lynch is the best way. Bonus points if they're actually non-town.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?

See above.

How do you successfully accuse people?

Whine and moan until you get your way. Actually i have no idea. Sometimes I mention a name and forty-five people jump on the wagon without me doing anything. Other times I have to resort to bribery.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?

Don't I wish. I thought claiming vanilla (as a SK in a game with a number of confirmable power roles) would do it recently, but alas I'd inadvertently accused three of four scum and got nailed regardless. A better way of looking at it is probably not to try, play however you like and however is fun for you, and let the chips fall where they may. When you get lucky, it will be all the sweeter for not having compromised.

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?

Mostly yes -- blend in and don't say anything stupid. Most games you'll make it at least half way with that strategy. It becomes more of a burden the further you go if the town is on their game, but for the early game there's nothing better for a mafioso (or worse for someone who's trying to play well as a townie).

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?

Go for the non-controversial ones (see last response). If you get quiet townies, great, you've neutralized the difficulties of analyzing people who play like that. If you get quiet mafia, all the better.

If you're playing in a game with no private communication, it can be worth deliberately going for probable townies, so that when you do claim you unload a whole stack of confirmed players on the mafia at once and squeeze them out.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?

I have no idea. The last time I was one I just self-protected every night on the reasoning that they'd have to target me eventually, and eventually they did. If that wasn't allowed I probably would have picked one of the more dangerous-as-townie players and stuck with them, for the same reason.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?

You truly, TRULY, do not want advice from me on this one.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?

Personally I'd go for the people I was suspicious of but doubted my ability to get lynched. Picking off lurkers can be useful depending on the setup. Acting as "town's second lynch" isn't appealing to me whether it's the right way to play or not (unless that player was very very likely to be the default lynch the next day).

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?

Gnaw on ankles until something interesting turns up. Repeat.

When should you roleclaim, and why?

I have no idea.

What is "scummy", exactly?

I know it when I see it. And sometimes when I don't. In very rough terms, words and actions that don't match like they should.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)

Heh. I'll give you some things that are not scummy.
-- acting weird
-- telling really REALLY obvious lies or making really REALLY obvious mistakes
-- PIS of the "you just revealed you know how many mafia are left" sort, or at least way less often than you'd think
-- not voting
-- being quieter or more talkative than usual (or at least way less often than you'd think)

And one thing that is: voting for all of the above as if it's the only reasonable thing to do, especially if you do it multiple times in one game. This is one "trade secret" I don't mind giving up if only because bandwagons about such things tend to annoy me SO much. I'd like to see them much more rare than they are.

(Voting non-voters/true lurkers as a matter of policy in a no-vigilante, no-WOG situation is a separate matter.)

How do you play when you're mafia?

I hide my head under a pillow and hope it all goes away. No, really.

What defines a good player?

As town: shows up, votes, and gives reasons as best they can.
As mafia: shows up, and avoids the kinds of tells that get people in trouble early and make life difficult for teammates

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?

Pretty much n/a.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?

Reliability first and foremost. Willingness not to interfere in one's own game, come what may, second (hosts who try to be helpful too often can wind up spoiling the game for some of the players and distorting the balance for others). Something resembling game balance third.

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?

Host hasn't turned me off in the past. That's all.

What is balanced?

Nobody's hugely annoyed at the end of the game, nobody feels they never had a chance.

How do you balance your games?

n/a

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?

I know it when I see it. :)

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?

I agree with what others have said.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?

About 20 players is my sweet spot. I adore small ones, but there aren't very many, and non-participation of anyone is fatal. I burn out sometimes on large ones, much as I love them.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?

Depends.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?

I play both ways and find both enjoyable.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?

I don't care, as long as it's clear.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?

I don't completely hate it, but would go for no quoting if I were Lady of the Universe.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?

Likewise. It's less of a problem when cover roles are provided. Conversations with the person running the game should ALWAYS be disallowed in public, though.

What is your stance on cover roles?

Mandatory in heavily-themed mafia games unless the ratio of town power to town vanilla is quite low. (The mafia should be able, with good play, to claim vanilla and have a chance to outlast the confirmable roles by doing so; if that's not likely, they need strong cover roles.) At least some cover roles should be able to be supported by real actions/results/etc if the mafia are on their game.

Optional to some extent in NOTW, due to NOTW roles generally being public knowledge and hence not subject to prejudice or accidental duplication. But in that case at least some of the evil teams' real powers should be amenable to "looking townie". The main thing is to avoid the "default lynch" situation, where normal-to-good play by the mafia nevertheless winds up with eight town players left who all have confirmed roles and actions; and three mafia with nothing to claim but "I have no power".

If you can manage all of this without in the process giving the mafia so much firepower that the town has little to no chance to penetrate the disguise, then you are an awesome host.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?

Depends on my mood, but the only time I have something specifically against a vanilla role is when it's a game where vanilla roles are promised options that never really have a chance to happen.

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?

Depends.

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?

Not much; they're pretty good.

Well, it is a survey... once the questions have been answered, I'm not sure what else to post. :scan:

While that's true, it was designed with getting a discussion going in mind (for a lot of the questions).

Read this a little before and figured I'd add my thoughts eventually, here they are.

Spoiler :

What got you interested in mafia?
Heard about the game in the past and seen it in other forums but I wound up playing my first game here after seeing it advertised in people's sigs and a general recruitment effort in the old forum games.

What was your favorite mafia game (on or off site)?
The Forest Auro's NOTW: It's a Long Story was really excellent and intense.

Is there a game you feel you played well in (again, can be on or off site)?
Pretty much any game I was in where the town was victorious I did pretty well, and some others where the town lost. Siege of Evermore was the most dominating town victory I've ever seen thanks to a few of us, I really enjoyed working with a good team in Night of the Mindworms, and caught a lot of scum including a serial killer in the nick of time in the Impending Retribution NOTW.

How long do you prefer each Day phase to last?
Not longer than 48 hours unless it's just 72 on the first day of a game with something to do the first day (actual votes that matter). 24 is ok by me even for large games but usually doesn't work for all players so 48 is better.

More than the actual phase timing I'm rather more opinionated about this: if it were up to me I'd also rather that hosts never, ever, grant extensions for inactivity if there's like anyone at all who by design does not have active orders to send. If the host has personal issues or there's another reason to do so, of course extensions happen. But it's extremely painful to be a townie with no abilities, and have phases extended so that lurking mafia who refuse to post on the actual thread can still send in orders, or for that matter even other townies.

What is your favorite generic mafia role?
Roleblocker and tracker are both excellent. Usually straightforward and trustworthy but rarely broken either, good targets have to be chosen and logic applied to work out who's scum. Not the hit or miss of truescans and fakescans nor the chaos and slaughter of all the killing-related roles.

What is your least favorite generic mafia role?
Unlynchable scum and bulletproof townies are both often bad. Not because they have to be, but they rarely are done right and it usually leads to brokenness and frustration. The extent to which these roles are bad depends on the relative power - a serial killer who survives one lynch, fine. A Mafia Godfather or Cult Leader who is absolutely untouchable and gets to keep doing stuff at night is frustrating, as is the unkillable townie in simpler games where the mafia have no way to get rid of him.

Mafia scanners are extremely evil. Not an inherently bad role, in fact I'd say less so, but also I always see them done wrong so worth a mention. A Mafia scanner is extremely overpowered against other mafia teams and hosts should recognize that, without proper checks balance it just leads to unfair situations, and you rarely see this role in just one mafia team vs. town, so watch out when making one mafia team dominate another.

What was your favorite role you received in a game (on or off site)?
My favorite for roleplaying and lulz was being the non-elf tourist in NOTW: Siege of Evermore. Everyone else was an elf, I was a silly human but I could protect people and did successfully; probably the town victory in that game contributed to my enjoyment of the role.

My role in NOTW: Impending Retribution was both difficult and paranoid to work with, and ultimately I didn't do nearly as much as I wished I could, but it was a very balanced and solid role. I've never received any great non-town role and wish I would sometime, the only couple of times I got a scum role I was explicitly like the "weakest guy on the Mafia team who can't actually kill on his own"

How do you successfully look unsuspicious?
Have other people who are your teammates and vouch for you. Otherwise, you can lurk and not post for like the entire game to show you are an inactive townie, but that's just terrible.

How do you successfully respond to criticism?
Have other people who are your teammates and vouch for you.

How do you successfully reverse a bandwagon?
Have enough teammates to know you can win the vote anyway, or let the bandwagon go and just kill the people on the bandwagon the next day(s).

How do you successfully accuse people?
Simply look for bad votes, bad reasoning, and contradictions or suspicious circumstances in people's actions and claims and point them out. That doesn't mean anyone will listen.

Is there a way you can influence the killers to not murder you?
Be inactive, but again that's bad. Otherwise, you can act scummy and risk a lynch if you know you have something that will prove your Innocence down the line, kinda a trap for the scum, but no easy way to do this. It's much easier when you're a bulletproof or some kinda retaliatory role to do the other way, try to get the killers to come after you.

Is there a way to avoid getting lynched early?
Mafia rarely do because they have teammates who can place a couple votes to get out of early metagaming or random lynches, though that comes with risks for later in the game. Otherwise, it's inactivity again.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a detective?
Don't scan people who are going to be lynched anyway or vigkilled anyway or are already decided to be Innocent anyway. I cannot stress this enough, people do it wrong all the time, but it wastes so many scans. Scan unknown and active players when there's a lack of suspicion and scan suspicious players who other people are unwilling to lynch or go after in the short term. As with most power roles, you can go a ways towards putting together a townie group if you're careful.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a doctor?
Find another important player and protect them. Really the townie group is key here. Unless you're absolutely sure a bluff will work or know you can stop another attack just sticking with the same person is worth it.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a roleblocker?
Usually don't go after the same person twice, look for working with a townie group like usual. Be ready for a solid public reveal moreso than the other power roles here which either have self-evident public reveals or get things together in private more easily so public reveal is not as necessary.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vigilante?
Kill suspicious players who won't get lynched anyway, or scanned or anything else in coordination with a townie group. So, much like a detective as above, such a waste to see one person both scanned and vigged and stuff like that. Also, don't waste limited vigkills without a reason. Early on active but unknown targets are better, later lurkers can go as necessary especially if you have kills to spare.

Also, I've always thought and still kinda considered it etiquette to not kill the very first day or night if you are really a town vigilante, as you're likely to kill a townie, neutral or SK it's ok. Also helps everyone figure how many scum kills there are. But so many people seem to ignore this these days that I could swing that way too, especially on something like cutting out perma-inactives.

What is your recommended strategy for playing a vanilla townie?

Be active and vote, that's all you can do. Depending on the game it's either a disastrous role if most of everyone else has real roles or merely a boring one, but eventually you'll expect to get killed or recruited or something.

When others are not also vanilla townies, try to kill people more powerful in ways that don't make sense, especially with themed games where you can guess things about characters. They are by default not vanilla townies and the more powerful the more likely to be scum.

When should you roleclaim, and why?
Whenever it helps. Really situational. In private to other townies, in public to prevent bad lynches, to accomplish any personal and additional goals.

Also, ask others to roleclaim as necessary, which should be often. Past early random-vote stages, people shouldn't get often out of lynches without roleclaims. I feel people roleclaim far less often than they should, and instead we often see just a few townies who are actually trying to put things together end up pressuring people to claim to no avail.

If everybody would roleclaim earlier and more often towns would win more, rather than inactive lurkers who eight days into the game never get asked or refuse to claim anything about their night actions.

What is "scummy", exactly?
Actually doing something suspicious verified by abilities, scans, or whatever is a start but also relatively unavoidable, for instance a scanner could catch a mafioso killing and that's "scummy" but not the same as the word is better and more commonly used.

What's scummy and expected to be seen in every game, are voting patterns and actions used that help other scum and hurt townies. These can be pieced together over the course of the game and it's how scum are caught in a good game.

We actually see a ton of scummy behavior that's extremely avoidable too though, so it's the below, kinda the deadly sins of scumminess:

-Lying about the game rules
-Lying about what was said in the thread or how someone voted
-Lying about verifiable game events, as in the writeups
-Lying about what someone said in private
-Voting or bandwagoning for no reason or blantantly false reasons

These are universally scummy and I don't know why other people do these things so often but I'd just request they'd stop, it would universally improve gameplay for everyone. You should pretty much never do any of these things, mafia or town, the bottom couple are very rarely justified but still always worth it to pause and think.

What are some examples of scummy behavior? (Maybe we can compile a comprehensive list of what actions are and aren't scummy, and rank them on their scumminess?)
See above. For avoidable scummy behavior, poor voting and bandwagoning is worse and more obvious for the scum to get caught than misleading others about abilities and cover roles and the like.

How do you play when you're mafia?
Do whatever special you might need to do to win and generally 100% follow Stalin's advice. Kill anybody who threatens you. Don't not kill without extremely good reasons. So many times I've seen mafia teams absolutely fail to even try to kill the people they should kill, or not even use all of their kills.

What defines a good player?
Someone who is active and doesn't perform any of those deadly sins of scumminess, which again should be almost always avoided, mafia or town. Being able to reason things out, actually try to accomplish your goals, and not metagame would be great except the above alone leaves so few players that it might as well be the threshold for god.

What do you look for, as a host, in a player?
Activity and following the rules.

What do you look for, as a player, in a host?
Lay down consistent rules and follow them, and have a balanced game. Writeups, humor, random details are far less important than a fair, balanced game, though I'm obviously very happy to join games with a host who does all of that well.

What do you look for, as a player, in a game that is in sign-ups?
Any game that looks playable and interesting enough, I'll join if I have the time. Really there's often not enough games around so I'm joining whatever game is next in sign-ups anyway.

What is balanced?
All factions and players should have decent and close chances of accomplishing their goals. This includes any secondary and personal goals which are often egregiously overlooked in some games. Better to not have so many secondary goals or care about survival if it's not going to be done right.

Hosts should also take into account inactivity these days, and plan in advance for adjustments that have to be made, like WoGs or replacements. Huge mistakes (inactivity or dead giveaways) by the mafia should be much more easily fatal than individual townies doing so.

Lastly, there's a big point I'd want to make here about designing for both balance and fun. Games should stand a greater chance of being won by strategy and decisions made for actual reasons, rather than random chance. Balanced games should avoid what I've termed "nightkillitis." The lynch should also not be depowered against the town's favor.

For the first point, hosts really should be very careful about ensuring that mafia teams are balanced with respect to each other and the theme of acting against the town. Mafia killing other mafia should be strongly considered and balanced around, not a default. Serial killers and cults should face similar considerations, the position of scum helping other scum, maybe because they need the other nightkill to keep happening is a strategic one but should happen by choice, not by chance.

Ideally, the setbacks of one mafia faction should strictly help the town and not overly hinder another unless that's very clear from the beginning and able to be worked around. I think part of the reason the NOTW "formula" works so well that's isn't really explicitly recognized is because it makes for very robust and dynamic games where everyone stands a chance. The basic example is a couple different scum groups with different goals versus a town. Say, let's consider a town, a faction of orcs who want to kill everyone, and a faction of evil wizards who want to complete a ritual via various other abilities or means. If one scum team screws up or loses if won't inherently screw over the other mafia team, but in either case it progresses the town's goals. Evil wizards dying isn't a direct setback towards the orcs killing everyone, really could help as much as anyone dying, and likewise the town taking down the orcs doesn't directly interefere with the wizards' victories and might make them safer from being nightkilled themselves.

In contrast, one can see many games where devastating blows of random luck take out of a lot of potential. Still happens in some NOTWs too, in a recent one saw a second scum team kill, randomly on Night One, the head Werewolf, permanently crippling the werewolf team. That's just kinda disappointing and usually can be avoided within reason.

So ask yourselves which game is better: a game with four serial killers and the rest townies, where anyone of those could kill anyone and it comes down to who kills each other the first few nights, or a game with one or two coherent mafia teams versus the same town. Both games could be won by anyone and in a sense are balanced, and for a subset of players with the more important roles both games may be equally exciting and chaotic, but ultimately I think most everyone will agree which is a more satisfying experience.

As for the last point about lynches - the more you have townies that can't do anything but vote in the lynch, the more fair and useful it should be. I also think hosts should be extremely careful to avoid unnecessary stuff that's imbalanced purely on a metagame basis - strict advantages given based on timezones and when players are online on the like. That not only hurts individual players but also collectivley hurts the town more too, because they can't coordinate as easily.

How do you balance your games?

Basically, make things interesting and make things fair, giving everyone a chance of winning as above. Having effectively spelled out rules and avoiding exploitation of a game by simple sorts of metagaming are some other things to check. For the latter role randomization helps a lot, as well as doing cover roles right and rules that allow people to say the things they need to say.

What is your idea of the ideal mafia/NOTW game?
Large-ish number of players, everyone is active and isn't stupidly scummy (see above again), lasts a decent number of gamedays to a close finish on a consistent schedule, host is funny and creative with writeups and flavor, possible sequel ;)

What is the difference(s) between a mafia game and a NOTW game?

Firstly, people pretend that NOTW is about roleplaying and say they roleplay when they don't. This is serious, because people don't really roleplay in NOTW, I've only see a couple other people plus myself ever effectively roleplay publicly. Lots of credit to them of course. But what people call roleplaying, as in "I'm a dwarfk and I havek a weird accent so I usek the letterk k" is not really roleplaying. Can be funny, but it's been done in lots of mafia games too and not exclusive to NOTW. Real roleplaying is more when people act and say real stuff about their character and their abilities and that's rarely done. I am also a bit disappointed nobody has ever figured out my secret yet.

But NOTW is still great and has some consistent things that set it apart from a random mafia game, don't get me wrong. Games are decent sized, I like the consistent use of strength and commonness of items. Being set in the FFH universe is something I rather like even though yes, it's not every NOTW, but even when not features like Good/Neutral/Evil alignment and personal goals are nice touches.

Do you prefer small games/Mini-NOTWs or large games/NOTWs?
I prefer larger games, but really any game with roles (as in game-ability roles, characters can be original or the characters can be actual "roles" as in a movie) over a game without roles.

Do you read updates, or do you skim them (or skip the flavor writing altogether)?

I almost always skim to see the results, except maybe an endgame or near endgame writeup which I know the host put together well for suspense. I do appreciate great writeups of course and will go back and read it. But if it's a choice between writeup and something else, like accurate or on-time results, just the results are fine by me.

What is your stance on the allowance of private communication in a game?
It's usually good by default. Games without it should have a reason why it's so is usually what I'd say. In particular I think it can make a good combo with a public role reveal system though, when purposefully designed into the game.

What voting format do you prefer (including item votes and unvotes)?
Just bolding and no editing is all I need or care about as both a player and a host. The rest is a courtesy more for other players but I don't see it has to be mandatory.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting PMs?
Too many incidents and general unsportsmanlike play have convinced me allowing players to quote and forward each other's PMs shouldn't be allowed. Results from actions or other things from the host are at the discretion of the host and the game design.

What is your stance on allowance of quoting your Role PM publicly?
Shouldn't be allowed willy-nilly but works fine when it's on purpose, and the host is consistent or has cover roles and the like. Also a no-no for NOTW I guess, that's another difference.

What is your stance on cover roles?
Nothing wrong with them, games can be fine with or without, but if so hosts should do them well. I'm a fan of elaborate and complicated roles (well, just as every role is hopefully decently complicated and detailed enough in a large game I'd host) but with some little flaw that can be caught out.

How do react to reception of a vanilla townie role?
I'm really sick of them actually. First remedy is to stop signing up for purely vanilla games which I might do for a while, but it's far more disappointing to have a vanilla role in a game that's not pure vanilla, to be one of the few players without a real role. And the way this question goes it's the latter, signing up for a game not knowing everyone is vanilla for sure and then being vanilla can be disappointing.

Do you prefer games that are more complex, or less complex?
More complex.

And I'll move this one out of the spoiler:

What improvements, if any, do you think could be made to Mafia and NOTW on CFC?

I would have said improving the queue and hosting schedules when this survey first was out but it's been good to see some recent adjustments.

There is one thing I'd strongly recommend hosts consider though. I think it would be great to try to move towards a universal WoG policy followed by a lot of hosts. Players would get to know the default and we really need to cut down on inactivity somehow. At the very least, even if not consistent with other hosts, I think hosts should spell out a WoG policy in the rules of their games. Only small, basic, quick games where a replacement could just be pulled in are happy with arbitrary WoGs. I'm thinking I would aim for something like two days without posting a lynch vote is an automatic WoG, replacement players available in sequence or no. Certainly some things adjustable depending on the game but as a host I intend to at least let players know there is a consistent WoG policy in future games I host, and not favor townies or mafia or anyone. No hard feelings or consequences for the future, just a WoG in said game. Over time I think this could lead to improvements in both player and host expectations of activity.
