You might have noticed a new subforum open up for Anniversary Awards.

The Anniversary Awards, which we have also been calling the Decade Awards, come from an idea from our friend Rob that we in the C3C&C forum celebrate our ten year anniversary with a "Best of the Decade Awards" culminating on the actual anniversary of the site, Oct. 30 (appropriately, Halloween).

We thought it was a great idea, and have, over the last couple of weeks, hammered out a list of categories for the contest. We tried to be fair and to represent all of the different types of creations that fill this wonderful forum (at one point the list had as many as fifty categories!), but we were forced by practicality to keep it to 24 categories - which is still alot!

So we've broken it up into three groups of 8 or 9 categories. The Nominations for the first group have now opened, and will run to the end of this month. In August, there will be polls in the Anniversary Awards forum for the top nomination in each of those categories (9 polls!)
Simultaneously, there will be a second nominations thread for the next set of categories, and the top nominations for those will be voted on in September.

And so on, until the polls close on October 30, 2011 and we will know who has won the Best Graphic of the Decade and Best Unit of the Decade Awards!

We're also planning to assemble a Jury of Elite C&C Veterans to make their own awards.

and We're planning a contest to design the Awards themselves.

So this will be a busy summer. Please enjoy it all, volunteer if you can, and PLEASE confine discussion of all this to this thread, so that we don't fill the nominations and other threads with commentary.

The Current Nominations thread is >HERE<

*raises hand* Are we allowed to change our nominations?

Yes, right up until the day the nominations close, no problem. Reserve the post if you want, but make sure your final nominations are posted by the 30th.

Now if you will please, Tak, change the post that had your question in it into a nomination post.

Well I do not know what to nominate. There's a lot fo work I haven't even seen. So I have to choose between
  • downloading every piece of content and checkin it here
  • choosing from among what I've seen
Logic dictates I must choose a.

Can we nominate our own work?

If you haven't already, it's well worth doing. Sure, change the text in your post to 'reserved' and go get a good look at all of the great artwork in these categories. If everyone does the same, it'll be a nice side effect of these awards. I scan the database constantly (shame on those who consistently put their stuff in the wrong categories - you know who you are!) and still find stuff I'd forgotten was there.

Can we nominate our own work?

Yes, you can nominate your own work. Definitely.

Half the stuff is not in the database at all, it is in the C&C forum's made by people that were here before the database.

There is a "shadow database" called 'Uploads' in which most of that stuff resides. There is an index to it somewhere; I know because I accidentally found it one day, then lost the link when my computer crashed. I'd love to find that index again. Some time back, Ozymandias organized an effort to get 'lost' units back into the database; not sure if that project was ever completed. I know I put a link to Rufus T Firefly's (the original one) Scientific Leaders post into the database and was rewarded with an "F".

..why not add a link to the nominations thread in the OP of this one?

There was a link to the nominations thread in there, Blue, but it was buried in the text (my bad). I've now added a more noticeable link at the bottom of the page as well.

Just wanted to say that I'm sorry for being one of the many who hyped the idea and then didn't participate much when it came down to making decisions. But I'm really glad that this is moving forward. This is one of the best ideas we've had for a long time.

Thanks, WW. You're usually pretty good at participation, so you get some slack ;). You can make up for it by participating in the rest of it - nominating, voting, & discussing. That's actually the fun part, anyway.

Question: Does "splash graphics" refer to wonder splash, or era transition, or both?

Both. Also: Tech and Buildings splashes, don't forget those.

Another question: does "overlay terrain" include terrain overlays? Goody huts, tile improvements, etc.

And a general comment: Since the polls will include the 10-25 most nominated entries per category, I'd suggest that everyone continue to look over the evolving nomination thread throughout the month. We don't all want to nominate the same 1 or 2 submissions, since that defeats the purpose of a nomination round. If you see that your favorite has already been mentioned a few times, you might as well suggest something new yourself. The more nominations there are, the more fun the voting will be. Let's hope that we have to narrow down the nominations before voting! :)

Bears repeating.

Yes, but if it's a package of dozens of overlays & terrain changes, like my Manhattan Terrain (or the Fallout Terrain, for instance) it's a Terrain. Cities have their own category. We'd briefly considered a catch-all category, Terraforming, to cover all graphics, but decided that doing so would be wholly unfair to the specialists like Kyriakos and Pounder, who make little masterpieces that deserve recognition. Use your common sense, and it'll work out.

PS: I recommend that members nominate what they think is the best work in any category, regardless of the number of nominations it has already received. While I hope for lots and lots of nominations, don't forget the goal is to recognize and reward great work. And, of course, the more nominations a piece receives, the better the chance it has of making it into the final poll.

Moderator Action: This needs to be very explicit & precise. Are people making nominations for a later nominations voting round? Or are these posts themselves the voting for what will be the nominations in the public poll?

If the former, then as WildWeazel says, once something is nominated there is no need to repeat the nomination.

If the latter then please clarify the OP. And be aware that you've given people the ability to change their vote as many times as they like.

I didn't mean to confuse anyone. These are nominations for the public polls.

I suppose. I was saying, don't be afraid to re-nominate something if you really think it's the better pick. My point was about preference, not mechanics. Don't nominate something that you wouldn't vote for when the poll comes out, please. That just adds work to the process.

And be aware that you've given people the ability to change their vote as many times as they like.

Until the 31st, when nominations close. Then the nominations will be compiled, and five days later the polls will open. It's fairly straightforward. Do you think that we could limit access to that thread after the 31st so that nominations can't be changed after that date?

How will categories with no nominations be handled?

The simplest way to do that is to have a moderator close the thread.

On the other hand, I don't think that nominating just to get the number of choices up adds any value to the process.

I think that it is ok that there are repeated nominations.

I have a feeling that there may be more that 25 nominations in some categories either way.

Can't people still edit posts in a closed thread? There's also the option of downloading the thread (under Thread Tools) on the closing date, which generates a raw text version of its current state. Not exactly elegant, but it works.

I didn't know we could do that: I learn something new every day.

There will be no categories with no nominations, 'cause I get my nominations, too. :D

Let's not fantasize bridges we may not have to cross....

No, you can't edit closed threads. :(
