Well, after a long wait, Earthling's brainchild is finally here. Please read ALL of the rules, as seen below, it is of the utmost importance that everyone understands them, as this game is a little different than other games, especially in terms of the lynch, and what can happen as a result.

Rules

Firstly, normal Mafia game rules apply. I think you all know what this means, obey forum rules, play to achieve your character’s goals, do not edit posts with votes; for brevity we only detail significant new or interesting rules.

Roles: Roles will be randomly assigned to all players signed up. Signups are aiming for the range of 35-40 players. Reserve players are welcome as well.

Game Timing: The game will have 48 hour day, and 24 hour night phases. Voting and order deadlines will be specified to this schedule, the updates themselves will occur around these times but perfect timing is not possible, only approximate. Talking in the public thread at night is allowed for the same players allowed to do so during the day.

Victories: All players have a Victory Condition and a Personal Goal. Accomplishing both would be ideal, but your VC takes precedence over your personal goal if you are in a tough spot.

Scoring is as follows:
Decisive Victory – Main Victory and Personal Goal
Marginal Victory – Main Victory Only
Close Defeat – Personal Goal Only
Total Defeat – no goals accomplished

The townie VC is to eliminate all threats to the town. Survival does not contribute to players’ victories unless specified as part of your character’s goals. Note that players in the hospital or the jail at the end of the game are not counted as surviving for the purposes of victories or elimination, unless other specified.

The game ends when townie victory is achieved, or a victory mutually exclusive with townie victory is achieved.

Lynches:

Players may not be surprised to learn that this section is VERY IMPORTANT. Please take extra caution to read and understand these rules thoroughly.

Things are always done differently in Springfield. You will have two options instead of a normal game’s lynch, but both should be thought of as a lynch.
All players get one vote, and must choose either of the lynch options, or abstain, which indicates your presence with no preference and does not count for no lynch.

The player with the most total votes, as a sum of Hospital and Jail votes, will be lynched with the exception of the first Day, where a majority of all players voting is required. Once a player is selected, the lynch result of Jail or Hospital is chosen by whichever received a majority. In case of a tie, the Hospital option is chosen.

The final vote tally will be provided with the corresponding writeup, but may be influenced by hidden abilities or effects from players.

Please vote by bolding, or with a vote prefix, retractions are preferred and should be struck through. There are no support votes.

Send a player to the Hospital…actually, this isn’t really as nice as it sounds, this is the one where you descend upon your victim as an angry mob. Usually the ambulance shows up in time and the target, beaten and bleeding, is whisked away.

Send a player to Jail …the player is arrested and sent to the prison under the eyes of the Springfield Police. Please note if at any time the hosts refer to this as “prison” or some other word players are in the same state, but so you don’t get confused, those are all the same thing.

Example votes:
jail: Alice
Alice Hospitalize: Bob

Distinctions between Jail and Hospital

The list of players on the first page of the game thread will be maintained with the status of all players, including “Living” which is the default status of any player able to vote, and “Jail” and “Hospital” as resulting from the lynch described above or other game events.

A player sent to the hospital is much more likely to be permanently out of commission. By default, players in the hospital are under severe restrictions. The standard effects are: they may not post in the game thread, may not vote, may not use abilities, and may not communicate privately with other players. However, players hospitalized are also encouraged not to despair and keep up with the game in case their status does change.

For the rest of the town, information on the character’s role or alignment will not be immediately revealed upon a lynch or other event sending a player to the hospital, due to doctor-patient confidentiality. Nor will the player necessarily lose their items. On the third morning after a player is sent to the hospital by any means, their status is reported, including a reveal of a character role and alignment.

A player sent to jail by the lynch or other means, is temporarily imprisoned pending the conclusion of the crisis facing Springfield or their exoneration. Immediately upon being sent to jail, a player’s items are confiscated by default, and come up to vote at the beginning of the next Day Phase. Information on the player’s character role and alignment will be immediately revealed, as the police begin their investigations and interrogations.

By default, players in jail may post on the game thread during both Day and Night with the full posting privileges of living players. They may not communicate privately with other players by any means, cannot place any votes including lynch votes, and cannot use abilities.

All players by default cannot use abilities on other players in the jail or in the hospital. Relevant players and character roles will be informed of exceptions to any of the jail/hospital rules above.

Town Decisions

On many days, the town may have to decide on an important issue causing game effects. This is apart from lynch, item, or other votes; it is its own vote. Each player gets to post one vote for this purpose with the same voting rules as above.

Release a player from Jail

Each day, the town may vote to release up to one player from jail. This vote is independent of other votes, please vote in bold green. It takes approval of a majority of all Living players to release one candidate from jail, not just a plurality of votes. Otherwise, the town will not release someone from jail at the end of the day.

Ability Orders:

Character roles will have abilities for players to use. Items may also provide abilities. Any active ability requires a PM to the GM (send these to robbiecon) at the appropriate time.

For the benefit of players anticipating short periods of absence or difficulty, players may send orders in advance or provide default orders for their character to perform in the event they do not send other orders. However, this practice is frowned upon for players who can avoid it, it is expected to be a rare occurrence and please do not aim to cause the GMs extra hassle.

In no case will any player be allowed to send orders for another player’s character, including players on teams. Posting orders on quicktopics should also be generally avoided if at all possible, PMs are heavily preferred.

All players by default may only use one active ability per game phase.

Items

Many character roles may have items and items will come up to vote over the course of the game. Most items have game relevant effects for all players, though some players may experience additional effects from some items. Items may have passive effects, while an active ability from an item works like a regular character ability, PM orders are required and it precludes the use of another ability.

By default, players may give any of their items to another player. Only the gifting player needs to PM the host to give the item away and the transfer will take place at the end of the current phase (end of Day or end of Night). Item transfers are considered to occur after all other abilities take place and are unlimited in number, as well as not exclusive to using other abilities. However, an item cannot be used for an ability and then transferred in the same phase.

Items that come up to vote will be listed in the morning update. Each will be voted for independently, every Living player getting to vote for each item if they wish with a bolded and colored vote. In the event of a tie, the item remains up to vote the next day.

Private Communication Rules:

Players may not be surprised to learn that this section is VERY IMPORTANT. Please take extra caution to read and understand these rules thoroughly.

Players must fully cooperate with the rules and restrictions laid out for private communication in all cases, or the game will suffer. Players breaking rules even accidentally may cause very undesirable consequences.

By default, all Living players may communicate privately, at Day or Night, by means of CFC PMs, chat services, or other such methods. Recall that neither Jailed nor Hospitalized players may do so. As such, Living players should only contact other Living players.

However, players may NOT create their own quicktopics. Some players will be provided with GM-created quicktopics they may use to communicate.

Some players will be informed of additional rules, restrictions, and things to mind regarding private communication. In all cases, you must strictly follow the rules the GMs lay out, including the above which remain the standard for anyone not informed of exceptions.

Quoting and Screenshots

Players may not be surprised to learn that this section is VERY IMPORTANT. Please take extra caution to read and understand these rules thoroughly.

In all cases, players may not quote or provide screenshots of messages, chats, or other communications passed between each other and to and from the GMs to parties who were not privy to the communication. You may not post such things in the game thread nor forward or quote to each other in further private messages.

As necessary, paraphrase any such information.

There is exactly one exception, relevant for all players, and no other exceptions.

Players who are eligible to post on the public game thread, may post at any time a quoted reveal of their Role PM, received from the hosts robbiecon and Earthling.

The Role PM may be quoted and revealed in full, or in part or edited by a player’s own trickery. The GMs will not confirm whether what a player says about their Role PM is accurate. Players may make such posts multiple times over the course of the game if they wish. However, any player must clearly indicate whenever they want other players to know they are quoting their Role PM.

No other messages from the GMs may be quoted in such a manner, including action results or anything else. If you did not receive a message with “Role PM” in the its title, you may not quote or imply you are quoting from it.

The strongly preferred structure of such a reveal, to comply with the rules and convenience for all reading in the thread, is to indicate your quoted material is from robbiecon and Earthling or “Role PM” in a separate quote block.

The hosts assure you that the original role PMs and game balance have been thoroughly reviewed such that attempting Role PM reveals as per the rules can cause no broken mistakes and will not upset the game. All players are free to consider strategies related to Role PM reveals and their consequences.

robbiecon & Earthling

Activity and WoG Policy

Players are expected to be active and participate in the game, for the game to be balanced and enjoyed by all the players. Should a player not be able to do so, there are no hard feelings, but the GMs will generally not be able to accommodate you. If any player has concerns to inform the GMs about in advance or at some point needs to drop out a notice will be appreciated, but even if not the rules below will apply and we wish the player will have enjoyed the game for the time they were in it.

As such, for inactive players a replacement player will be given a character role or the role will be WoG’d.
After the first Day, two consecutive days without placing any vote results, in a replacement or WoG if no replacement players are available.

“Take That, East St. Louis!” A Springfield Mafia Game

Introduction

“No not over there. Get the camera here! No, robbiecon’s just a pseudonym. So hard to find a good assistant. We’re on air? –“

“Hi! This is Kent Brockman reporting to you live from Springfield’s town hall. The next speaker is going to announce the decisions made by the committee for Springfield’s Heritage and History.”

At this moment, all seemed in bright and cheery spirits at the town hall. It was an important historical anniversary for Springfield and a volunteer committee had been formed to oversee various preparations in addition to normal town hall business.

Comic Book Guy, who had worked his way up to be chosen as the head of the committee this year and somehow managed to actually do a lot of good work was about to discuss their plans. But before he took the podium Mayor Quimby received a note from one of his security guards and had something to say. “Ah, er, um, yes, I must inform you we’ve heard vague rumors about shadowy conspiracies and threats against everyone here in this town hall. Something about retribution for all of Springfield’s dark deeds. And due to the scrutiny of the latest anti-corruption measures,” he said dryly, “I, er, uh, had to inform the town. Carry on.”

So Comic Book Guy walked up to center stage, proud and confident as he really did care for Springfield and wanted to show it. But as he did so, he made one dangerous mistake.

He was still carrying a humungous-sized Squishee he’d brought in with him, one of his favorite drinks, and took a big gulp to calm his nerves. Then as he took a few more steps forward he collapsed, convulsing and clutching his chest.

Dr. Hibbert ran forward from the crowd to help, and the prognosis was very grim. This was because, once again contrary to everyday expectations, the morbidly obese Comic Book Guy had not suffered from a heart attack or similar health problem.

“It seems…he was poisoned. Hee hee heh heh heh.” First the doctor began in a very cold voice, but then Hibbert everyone knew couldn’t help himself.

So other paramedics arrived to help out, as the worried town looked at Comic Book Guy. But there was still a glint of hope in his eyes even as he was carried away on a stretcher, and he spoke up to the town: “I believe in Springfield, we are and will remain a great city…”

Spoiler :
Comic Book Guy (Earthling) was hospitalized
Spoiler :
He was an Innocent Springfieldian!

“And more on these shocking developments after a word from our sponsors….”

“No Arnie, we don’t need a helicopter at town hall. Just – ” (commercials)

Note: Kent Brockman and Comic Book Guy are NPCs, they are not active as part of the game, players cannot use abilities or interact with them in any way, nor are the GMs controlling any other characters to some effect.

If you did not receive a message with “Role PM” in the its title, you may not quote or imply you are quoting from it.

what does that mean? Isn't everybody going to get a role PM, even if they are generic springfieldian?

3) about the example hospitalization--in the real game the result wouldn't be revealed for 3 days right?

4) can we send a person in jail to the hospital?
edit- notice how I say "we"-- already pretending to be a townie trying to get "scum" to the hospital :mischief:

1) Duly noted

2) I think what Earthling means by this, is just that you cannot quote any messages other than your role PM.

3) That is correct, if someone is hospitalized, their character will not be made public for 3 days

4)I'm pretty sure you can't, once someone is in jail, they're basically safe from the angry mob, but can't partake in angry mob stuff either. Earthling might have the conclusive answer to this.

Some quick questions answered, don't think these are FAQ worthy but could go there if so, just straightforward clarifications.

It's just beating everyone over the head with the same point - you can't quote anything else. You can't quote your "Night Three Results" from the hosts. Everyone will have a Role PM.

3) about the example hospitalization--in the real game the result wouldn't be revealed for 3 days right?

4) can we send a person in jail to the hospital?

By default a player sent to the hospital would not have their character name or alignment directly revealed right away, that's correct. Anyone who is not "Living" is not a valid selection for lynches.

El Barto is in da house.

We're not allowed to be surprised...? Do you mean "might"? Or to delete the "not"?

Oh, and if everyone can quote their Role PMs in the thread... Well, the mafia have cover roles, right?

But he was IN B4 You!
