each has a relatively low chance of happening

event #1
"MyVid"
Text - A new website that lets users upload audio and video to their own account to share with friends, family and the world is steadily gaining in popularity.
Options --
1. Artists and musicians should have no problem finding a platform to become known now. +5% culture from all Computer Network buildings
2. Many of these so-called "artists" are simply co-opting the work of other people and companies into vulgar "remixes" and other derivative works. We must protect the copyright holders from these jackals. +5% gold from all Computer Network buildings

event #2
"CongoMarket"

1. If the future of retail is online, then so be it. We should not interfere with the new model of doing business. All cities minus 15% gold. Computer Network buildings +25% gold.
2. Support laws to ensure that "brick-and-mortar" stores can continue to compete with online retailers. Allowing physical stores to go out of business can only hurt our economy. Computer Network Buildings +5% gold

Event #3
"Komitipedia"

Options --
1. It gets them started on the paper doesn't it? And it often points them to proper source documents in the citations. So what if the information is occasionally grossly inaccurate? Computer Network Buildings +3% science
2. If everyone's using this now it couldn't hurt to encourage people with actual degrees on the subject matter to touch up relevant entries. With their help Komitipedia could potentially become a halfway decent tertiary source document. Costs 5000 gold (or more). Computer Network Buildings +10% Science

Event #4
"SpaceB00k"
Text - A new website called SpaceB00k has invented the term "social media". It's users post information about themselves and the site helps them find and befriend people with similar interests. Socialization ensues.
Options --
1. Well there's another basic human need taken care of by computers. Why do we even go outside anymore? Computer Network Buildings +4 happiness
2. My god will you look at those lists of "interests"? A fantastic resource for targeted advertising just dropped into our laps! Computer Network Buildings +2 happiness +10% gold.
3. Make sure SpaceB00k knows to cooperate fully with our secret police when we use their website to monitor for subversive types. Requires Despotism, Monarchy or Fascism. +20% espionage

Now for some natural disasters ...

Quicksand
Requires: Unit on Dune Terrain

Your troops are stuck in Quicksand

  • We are all going to die! (Units are killed).
  • Stay Calm and pull them out. (Stuck for 1 turn). [Requires Cooperation]

Rock Slide
Requires: Unit on Rocky Terrain

A rock slide has blocked your troops.

  • You find your way around (Stuck for 1 turn).
  • Use TNT to clear a path through. [Requires Explosives]

Avalanche
Requires: Unit on Peak Terrain

An avalanche has blocked your troops.

  • You find your way around (Stuck for 1 turn).
  • Use a Snow Plow to Clear a path through. [Requires Machine Tools]

Haboob
Requires: Dune Terrain

A great sandstorm is heading our way.

  • There is nothing we can do. (Units and buildings are destroyed on the tile.)
  • Evacuate the area before the storm comes. (Units are pushed to the next tile but buildings are destroyed.)[Weather Forecasting]
  • Use weather control to dissipate the storm. [Weather Control]

By making them rare I was hoping all the options would have a net positive benefit one way or the other and you're choosing your bonuses for embracing the new tech (spamming computer networks everywhere)

Question: Why would anyone ever choose to ban "World of Neverquest" when the other two options give you stuff?
If I may make a suggestion:

For WoNQ
-for first option double the happy bonus and -5% hammers -5% commerce from Computer Nework (not gold, this is lost productivity which could be anything from research to art to business)
-nix the banning option
-For third option no happy bonus +5% hammers +5% commerce from Computer Network
Basically it's a choice between having more production though bigger cities and therefore more specialists and having more production and commerce though straight bonuses

For Gooble or Wobble or Plexi or whatever... Goober.
-expand the sweeping aside all Competitors thing in the description. That's what sets up a decent choice. Ex: The commerce oriented Gooble, a "search engine" has set itself up as far and away the most popular choice for finding stuff on the internet. Web Watchdogs fear it may use this monopoly to skew what we find despite their "very sincere" promise not to.
-Option 1: Sincere eh? I suggest we trust them. +5% gold from Computer Network building
-Option 2: Well how about these Ping guys, they say that their algorithms are optimized for finding the exact information you need with as little effort as possible. +5% Science from computer networks

DISCLAIMER: Any resemblance to search engines real and fictional are entirely coincidental. I don't give a care about the perceived merits of one over the other and I totally made up the gold versus science dichotomy out of whole cloth. Total disclosure: I use "Gooble" most often out of force of habit.

Hydro:For that Avalanche you need a snow plow. For an effective snow plow you need an automobile. To build an automobile you need to know...

You're way better at defining this stuff than I am, please feel free to do with suggestions made as you see fit. One fo the options I was trying to parody (badly) with the Gooble thing was the reaction the Chineese government had of filtering and censoring seraches, but I didn't really cpature that very well. (BTW - World Wonder - the Great Firewall - increases espionage in some manner)

More ideas ...

Salt Flat Racing
Requires: Salt Flat Terrain and Motor Sports

A group of racers are using the nearby salt flats to race each other.

  • Let them have their fun.
  • Make this into a national sport! [Requires Speedway]
  • This is much too dangerous. They could hurt themselves. [Requires Modern Healthcare]
  • Its hurting the natural ecology of the salt flats. [Requires Ecology]

Bamboo Forest
Requires: Bamboo Terrain Feature and Bronze Working

A group of lumberjacks what to cut down the nearby bamboo forest, but find pandas living there.

  • The pandas can find a new home. We need that bamboo. (Bamboo is Cleared and gets +:hammers: and )
  • Have the Hunters capture the Panda. (Bamboo is Cleared and gets +:hammers: and Receive a Subdued Panda) [Requires Master Hunter building]
  • Capture the pandas and take it to the zoo before cutting down the forest. (Bamboo is Cleared and gets +:hammers: and +:) at Zoo) [Requires Zoo building]
  • No, preserve its natural habitat. (+:health: +:)) [Requires Ecology]

@Kosh: Great Firewall could be a world wonder that gives free espionage to computer related buildings. I would go suggest it in the buildings thread if I were you. Or, yanno, wherever it's most appropriate.

What about Land speed record requires salt flats in your cultural borders?

unless something intrigues me more (like the volcanoes ;)) I'll probably work downward this thread - leaving ideas that I find impossible (for me) to implement aside. However, what I'd like to do first is add a few filler events (can recur , generally low impact, maybe a bit higher impact now and then and preferably have no or very early tech requirements) thinking about adding an event or two for any feature/terrain type like the stuck in swamp thing. This is to ensure that higher impact events don't dominate. So any more ideas to that direction would be very helpful.

Werewolf (quest)
[Requires a worker unit to be killed by a hyena] [Medivil period]
[requires state church civic to be active]
The peasants are terrified and flocking to the Church, only in our God can salvation be found, all according to plan.

Spawns a werewolf unit (stealth barbarian? ranger with a hyena instead of a dog)
5% of population to city closest to slain unit upon death, with non state church worshipers converts to state religion each time a unit is slain.
Gain building "Myth of the Werewolf" building +3 :culture: +1 unrest per turn per slain unit until Werewolf until slain, -25 :gold: per turn while quest active (meaning unit is alive).

Needs work, but this is the kind of event I want to see pop up.

Only enabled with alt timelines/mythical creatures please (so fine in games with mermaids but not in normal games). Variant that had all the beliefe system parts but not the actual unit would be fine though in any game

Er... why not a wolf? Also, keep in mind that animals don't enter cultural borders, even on Raging Barbarians, so it would be exceedingly rare.

Alternate Idea : I'm not sure if ori can do quests, but what if there were a rash of ghastly murders in one city and the citizenry believed there was a werewolf. The player has X number of turns to bring a Subdued Wolf to the City as the "culprit" to gain a temporary happiness bonus. Or... just spawn a wolf near the city and killing it before it leaves the cultural borders satisfies the quest? Something like that.

Spawnign a regular animal inside cultural boundaries will either not work (it'll be immediately ejected) or run the risk of causing starnge behaviour in the AI code.
