So I've just discovered that Germany, Mexico, and Quebec all require PHOTO ID to be shown when voters want to vote. How long has this been going on? How can American continue to deal with these places knowing they are going out of their way to keep minorities from voting by using such horrendous practices as making people show who they are??

I don't get it.

What's wrong with photo-id?

Don't passports have photographs in them?

Borachio, it's horribly racist. Didn't you know that? That people should have to obtain an ID proving who they are to vote is an unacceptable burden to place on them.

Many conservatives have problems with photo id - just ask what they think of a university id as being adequate.

Well, I'm not in favour. I like to think I'm an honest enough person that my word that I am who I say I am should be enough.

But I'm also a realist. No one can tell just by looking at me, that I'm just too stupid, and lazy, to pretend to be anyone else.

(This is a lie. Anyone can tell I am that stupid and lazy just by looking.)

If by minority you refer to the minority not having IDs and hence not being Germans... Its true, Germany is pretty fascist when it comes to the voting rights of Non-Germans. It is probably because Non-Germans do not belong to the Herrenvolknationality
Though this actually raises an interesting question! You do not even need to be German to vote in local elections I believe, EU-Nationality is sufficient. Does this mean all EU-members have IDs? What if they don't?

Needing photo id is an unfair burden on us that vote is hundreds of precincts for each election. How am I going to obtain an id acceptable in each precinct?

I don't get it.

The US has a peculiar problem with this because of the constitutionality of poll taxes (specifically, they aren't cool), the constitution having a distinct lack of any statement requiring identification, leaked audio showing certain people in favor of photo IDs are actually wanting to suppress the vote of people who aren't voting for them, the long history of Jim Crow where for a century in a part of this country minorities were not allowed to vote not by being directly forbidden but rather by stuff like this, and the Justice Department conducting a 5-year study of voter fraud and they found out of millions of votes cast a grand total of 80-something fraudulent votes. To name a few.

It's a solution looking for a problem that doesn't exist. And given our history, people are suspicious of these oh-so-innocent-looking voter ID laws.

Quebec also has a universal healthcare system which use photo IDs (thus everyone has those, and nobody need to go through the hassle of getting ID just for elections, not even the heathen non-drivers), which are accepted as legal photo ID for elections.

Tell you what, VRWC. Any state that implement universal single-payer healthcare with photo IDs (the implementation of such universal healthcare being done in an acceptably non-racist way) can make those IDs a requirement for voting without being called racist. Deal? :-p

I think I'd come down on the "pro-voter fraud" side of this debate- it bumps up voter turnout, and anyone who feels so strongly about voting that they'd risk breaking the law to vote again deserves a another vote or several, I'd say

Don't all Germans have a photo ID anyway? In that case the comparison to the US is not that simple.

Americans put people on the Moon, built the Internet, created the biggest credit card companies in the world and so much more...

And yet they still run around writing checks, lacking photo IDs and dropping mobile phone calls all over the place!

I just don't get it.

What do you mean exactly? Is this sarcasm that flies over my head? Wouldn't a driver's license or a credit or debit card with your photo on in it be enough?
