The tournament is done!

When I saw Royal Tenenbaum's faction wars, I started to wonder how much of its result would be determined by the mechanics of the game, and whether its results would be different with a very different tournament style. So I decided to begin a single elimination-style tournament. Here's how it's going to work:
-Every two days, I post the current matchup of two or three civs. For example, Egypt vs. China vs. Babylon.
-You pick the civ you like best from them, based on whatever factors you consider important and post your choice in the thread, preferably boldened so it's easier for me to notice and count in longer posts.
-After two days, I make a post that the voting is over and count all the votes that have come in before that post. If I ninja you, better luck next time.
-The winning civ from each matchup goes on to round two to go up against other winners, and the winner of those goes into round three, etc. In round five, we'll have the finale and determine the winner.
-You get one vote per matchup.

Get it? Well, then let's get to the seeds. Since we have 44 civs, the first round will consist of eight three-way battles and four duels, after which we will have 16 civs left for round two and all further match-ups will be duels. I seeded the matchups randomly using random.org 's list randomiser as follows:

Seeds:
Spoiler :
Thailand
Mughal
Babylon

Mongol
Mexico
Indonesia

Argentina
Korea
Aztec

Bye
Turkey
Colombia

Egypt
Moors
Phoenicia/Carthage

China
Maya
Japan

India
Congo
America

Brazil
Inca/Peru
Poland

Spain
Prussia/Germany
Greece

Persia
Bye
Ethiopia

Netherlands
Mali
Rome

Tibet
Holy Roman Empire/Austria
Italy

Bye
France
Iran

England
Portugal
Khmer

Russia
Tamil
Arabia

Byzantium
Bye
Scandinavia

In which every instance of 'bye' denotes a two-civ matchup. If Leoreth ends up adding a new civ before the first round is over, I'll add it in one of these byes; if he adds it only after we've gotten to the second round, the new civ is out of luck and can't get in any more.

To rank the losers of the first round, I used the percentage of votes they received during their match. Poland automatically received the 17th place since it was tied for the winner of its match with Inca and only lost in a tiebreaker. The other civs were ranked according to the percentage of votes they received. When two civs were tied, I broke the tie using the following criteria (in this order):
-Civs that were up against two other civs beat civs that were up against a single other civ.
-Civs that placed second in their matchup beat civs that placed third.
-Civs from matches with more total votes cast beat civs from matches with less total votes cast.
After this, two ties remain: Mexico and Indonesia are tied for 22nd place and the Mughals and the Netherlands for 37th place.
-In round 2, there was a single tie, between Mongolia and the Aztecs for 14th place. To break this tie, I looked at their vote percentage in round 1.

Match 1:
Spoiler :
With all that said, let's get to the first match-up of round one!

In the blue corner, autorazing Angkor in 1350 AD to make space for their own capital, it's
Thailand
VS
In the green corner, taking over Delhi in 1206 AD, it's
Mughal
VS
And in the light-blue corner, spawning right at the start in Mesopotamia, it's
Babylon

To start things off, I vote for the Mughals myself. A fun UHV, surprisingly powerful, an elephant UU, and they built the Taj Mahal, which I consider one of th emost beautiful buildings in the world.

Definetely Babylon for me. The civilization that built a city that was fought for in so many wars and become the capitol of so many empires deserves a win here.
I am actually a little sad that Mesopotamia is so small and, unless you build them yourself, you don't ever see most of the other important city states in that area...

Babylon. My first UHV win, and it is a rather fun puzzle UHV and feels very historical.

Babylon.
Babylon > Mughal.
- UP is more realistic and much more significant
- UU is actually real, unlike Mughal UU which is fictional
- UB is iconic, unlike Mughal UB which is a generic afterthought and quite abusive
- UHV is historical and interesting, unlike Mughal UHV which is straightfoward City States abuse
- Stability is carefully balanced, unlike Mughal Stability which is terrible for no reason

As for Thailand, possibly the worst civ in DoC. No direction, no purpose, no impact. It shouldn't be there, period. Should have been a Khmer respawn and nothing more.

Come to think of it, why is Thailand there? It serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever, yes, but what purpose is it *supposed* to serve? That the Khmer cannot accomplish already?

It doesn't even deserve a "Removal of Thailand" thread, unlike Poland. Because it is that pathetic and worthless.

I wanted to vote for the Mughals, but I've been persuaded to vote for Babylon by IOSI. But it might be possible that the city-states civic is what's ruining your stability when playing as the Mughals.

I actually don't use City States because I find it too abusive. Its :food: bonus needs to be capped (at say, +7 :food:), just like the Dynasticism :) bonus.

The -20 something "Cities Lost" Stability penalty that you start with is what's ruining your (or anyone's) Stability when playing as the Mughals. But that is going to be less of a problem once Leoreth redesigns the Stability system.

Between the changes to northern Europe's terrain, the stability system redesign, the overhaul of the civics system, and the post-colonial nations of Central and South America, I would say that this modmod's best days are still ahead of it :D

Thailand needs a vote.

Question though: where did the starting groups come from? If Spain were in with Maya and Poland I'd vote for Spain, but if it were in with the USA and China I'd pick something else. Doesn't seem the fairest.

Mughals is the best civ in Asia

I seeded them randomly using random.org's list randomiser. I can't think of a much fairer system really, as I considered seeding by starting year (Egypt vs. China vs. Babylon; Greece vs. India vs. Phoenicia, etc) or trying to guess which civs would do well and which ones wouldn't, but that would basically just be my personal preference. I'd seed Babylon quite low, for example, and this first match already shows I would be wrong about that. Therefore, seeding randomly seemed fairest.

Thai should be removed and use Barbarian stacks instead to raze Angkor.
Then add Taungoo instead as Khmer respawn at 1510. Ayutthaya itself belongs to Taungoo.
Burma also wars against China, Siam and British India.. which should be more fun than the peaceful Thai.

Oh and btw, I vote for BABYLON :)

I'm sure this will be an absolute shocker to all of you, but Babylon wins and passes on to round 2!

Spoiler :
Thailand: 1 - 7,14%
Mughals: 2 - 14,3%
Babylon: 11 - 78,6%

Match 2:

In the brown corner, spawning in 1190 AD to conquer the largest empire ever, it's
Mongolia
VS
In the green corner, (re)spawning in 1810 AD to achieve independence from their European masters, it's
Mexico
VS
And in the cyan corner, spawning in 700 AD in their (mostly) peaceful corner of the map, it's
Indonesia

Two important notes: Mexico means just Mexico, not the Aztecs as well. Only the respawn. Secondly, please bolden your votes, even if it's the only word in your post.
