In tribute to Ariel Sharon, this thread is dedicated to the freedom he stood for by allowing for fairly open discussion.

Ariel Sharon's life was one of dramatic highs and lows. As a soldier, he was both a war hero and a national disgrace. As a politician, he was a brazen leader who fought for Israel’s security, but became despised for withdrawing unilaterally from the Gaza Strip and offering Palestinians a state of their own.

His son, Gilad Sharon, announced his death Saturday, saying "he went when he decided to go."

Wasn't he staying in Israel due to the international warrant issued for his capture by Belgium?

A great person. Only mistake of his was that a few people survived his massacres at Sabra and Shatila.

Not that many people actually mourning for this man, you could expect that there are even places where they going to cheer over it.

Well, he was in a coma for a quite a long time and it wasn't expected he would ever recover from it. So it doesn't really come as a surprise that his death went relatively low-profile.

Nevertheless, R.I.P.

I imagine it was rough living as a man with both a first and last name that are usually associated with women.

What the hell? Ariel's always a man's name. You should get to know your Hebrew better.

That film's older than you are. And it's from Disney… In Real Life™, prior to that stupid film, Ariel's been a man's name.

You mean like Ariel Serena Hedges Bowen, Ariel Bybee, Ariel Durant, Ariel Gade, Ariel Gore, Ariel King, Ariel S. Leve, Ariel Levy, and and Ariel Lin, just to name the ones from A-L in this list before I got tired of looking them up?

From your very same page:
In modern Hebrew, it is primarily used as a male name. However, in recent years in English-speaking countries, it has been more commonly used as a female name. A common modern Hebrew female equivalent is Ariella. An alternative English and French spelling is Arielle.

According to Google, it is from the Arabic word "aryal" which is a type of Gazelle. It wasn't transformed into "ariel" until the mid 19th century.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it is from the Greek word "ariel".

According to Behind the Name, it is the 181st most popular name for girls in the US, while it is only 772 for boys. But in Chile it is #78 for boys.

Just to note that (much like the link above also 'alludes to' - but does not outright say so) Ariel is in no manner a Greek word. It seems to have been used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament, unchanged from the original Jewish word Ariel. The ending of the word alone makes it non-Greek, cause no Greek word ends in 'L'; only foreign names ending in L would be written in Greek in this way too. ;)

According to Babylon, it is the Greek word Αριέλ.
