Rachel Dolezal is an NAACP leader in Washington, an adjunct professor of Africana studies and part of a commission for minority groups interests in Washington. She appears to be a very light skinned black woman with a black hairstyle. Most people would probably say her race was a bit ambiguous but accept that she had African American ancestry when informed of that.

Well turns out she doesn't. Her parents have come forward and said they are not black, the black boy she identified as her son is actually her adopted brother and a photo of her taken with a black man she called her father is not actually her father.

She has also made many claims about being the victim of hate crimes by white supremacists. These claims were cast into doubt when a package in her home was said to not have been delivered through the mail and could have only got there by someone using a key.

She also claimed to have been abused by a stepfather but her parents say she never had a stepfather.

It looks like this person has serious mental health issues. However it does bring up the issue of whether she's really done anything wrong. The NAACP has backed her up and said their leadership is open to people of all races.

I think the hate crime claims are more of a problem because if its not true she's wasting people's time and possibly raising panic over this.

So far she hasn't admitted to not being black yet.

I guess my question is, would she have been hired if she told them that she was white, instead of black?

Seems kind of mentally questionable to do something like this. Does she hate her actual origins? Pretends to be something else for that reason?

Her parents said she started pretending to be black after they adopted some black children. She was in her late 20s at the time. I think there might be some issue there.

Also she had all the claims about hate crimes and that she was abused by a non existent stepfather. I think some people like to appear as a victim to get attention. I remember hearing about someone who pretended to be a holocaust survivor.

If you pretend to be black and secure a leadership post with the NAACP, then you may attract hate crimes from local racists and can them sue them for the civil wrongs they commit against you because the believe you are black.

So, so bad. She got to pick and choose when to be black or white. She didn't grow up black but acted like she did, and that she knew first hand the black experience, but she could go home and take it all off if she wanted. She massively appropriated and took up space that real black women could have occupied. She slandered her parents by claiming they abused her. She made up hate crimes. The latter two just makes it worse for real victims.

The NAACP fairly regularly hires white people and other POC; actually in its early days there were a ton of white people involved. There was nothing she did that couldn't have been done while being honest about who she was.

If she's sick, I hope she gets help. If not, then she constructed and continued a scheme that 99.99% of the population couldn't even conceive of.

Is there a way to make the thread red diamond after the initial posting? I don't mind the occasional silly post but after three of them ...

She lied about personal stuff to fit in and get on. She also has some pretty huge issues with her parents and upbringing. Neither of these is rare, so why has this case gathered so much attention?

1. The politics of left-and-right is obsessed with identity.

2. America is obsessed with race.

3. Public opinion is obsessed with hypocrisy in politics.

4. Humans are obsessed with parent-child relationships.

For what is otherwise a pretty unremarkable story, this poor woman has hit close to a perfect score in the 'generate excessive interest and outrage' stakes.

This is the woman in question.
