Landmarks

This is mainly cosmetic, but I really liked it in SMAC that you could put names on the map. Can't be particularly hard to implement either.

It would also have some use in MP games, making it easier to refer to geographic locations.

That's what I was hoping Civ3 landmarks would be like. Not landmark terrain (although that's a nice idea, too).

Why? The AI obviously wouldn't name anything, so in single player games the player should always be able to name any area... Would be good if you could outline the area that's considered under that label, or at least have seperate types of labels for Oceans, Continents, Provinces/States, and Countries...

It would be great if you could name map features, and maybe you could even use it as part of the game. For example you could tell your workers to improve a specific area of the map or make your soldiers patrol a region.

Ditto. It think it would be nice also if larger areas could be landmarks with special bonuses as in SMAC. The randomness of resources in Civ 3 could nicely be complemented with extra lush or mineral rich areas and so on. It's not just resources, but regions rich in something that have caused wars. I wouldn't attack my neighbor just because he's got horses. But if he has a region with exceptional amounts of horses I just might be tempted to put my hands on that region. Same with oil, olive trees, you name it.

Yeah, I loved that feature of SMAC and was really disappointed that Civ3 abandoned it.

Great idea! I would appreciate a feature like that when planning city locations. Now you have to keep them all in your head. It's hard to keep track of 5 such locations, the tiles they will cover, tiles that will overlap or be unworkable. And then you discover more of the map and want to move those cities... Some kind of tagging tool would really help.

An importnt request!

It's a detail, but it makes a lot of difference in the game. Specially in late game when you control a big bunch of terrain.

Then you could also make a "shift-L" (with another letter...) to it for example.

Would be better with some automatic name system such as one which name each civ's city.

You could have the Mississipi for the America, Nil for Egypt and so on...

Why not? This could be done under a system similar to the city naming system. The computer could pick 4-10 cities grouped together and name them out of thier list. They could also name terrain features, and the names would start off with real features and expand from there either to fictional/made up places or nearby areas.

I agree with this completely. To be honest I was thinking of suggesting something like this. I've always thought that a naming scheme was needed for things other than cities. Mountains, rivers, and bodies of water. If a cluttered map is a concern, then just dump the city view and use that space for a large scale map with everything named. I would also code in a toggle that would bring up those names on the main map.

I'd like to put names on the map. In civ3, I have to use paints to do it, and it is longer.

I wrote them about this and suggested it when PTW was in the works. I think it would be great. When negiotating with the AI about cease-fires or RoP or asking them to respect RoP, one could refer to the name of the region, whether it be a lake, a river, Mountain range, etc. It could be a preset list, like with cities. Instead of cities being bartered in trade talks, the different regions could be traded.

I would also like to see Explorers used for something and Scouts and Explorers could be the first to discover a region and name it. Throughout the history of the game, the AI would also refer to those regions either by their name or yours, perhaps based on the culture or power rating of the civ. Even without cities built in that region, perhaps being there and naming it first could give the region a tendency towards the discoverer's civ. Balancing with expansionist civs would be a factor I guess, but it's something to think about.

This is a great idea and needs to be added to the game. I can see no downside. I like the idea of using the existing AI city naming feature which would pop up when a new geographical feature is discovered or a certain region with a geographical identity become populated with X number of cities. If you didn't like the suggested name, you could choose your own as you currently can do with the cities. It would personalize the world and make it easier to find and discuss the world with other leaders, human or AI. If they put it as an option in the custom game menu, players could decide to either use it or not use it, as some might not want to mess with the pop up naming window.
