Brad Wardell to Make Master of Magic 2?

I guess a few people here are old enough to remember the classic fantasy 4X game Master of Magic (there is a MoM mod for Civ3 in the mods section), so I thought I'd pass this on. Brad Wardell of Stardock, who made the excellent Galactic Civilizations, is considering making a sequel to the game in conjunction with Atari/Infogrammes, who own the rights to the game and he's looking to see if there is enough interest.

In Brad's own words

"I think the question is, if Stardock did a MOM2 would enough people pre-order it to justify the considerable risk involved in making a sequel to a 10 year old game. Do people trust Stardock enough to turn out a good game enough to pre-order?"

"That is essentially what we would do. Take the original game and enhance the graphics (3D engine still top down but now you could zoom in and out on the map at will) and give it a good AI."

"If we did a MOM2 it would be in conjunction with Atari who currently owns the rights. But doing such a game will be quite expensive. More expensive than a GalCiv type game. So it's not known how many people would buy the game once it came out and so there's an element of risk involved. We would want to get at least 5k pre-orders."

"But the reason the risk ON US would be high for doing a MOM2 would be precisely because Stardock would have full control over the game.

That's the trade off. Stardock would self-fund the project (i.e. 7 digit budget). The reason Galactic Civilizations was done in the way it was was because we self-funded that. That gives us a lot of flexibility. But that flexibility comes with a price.

5k pre-orders at $45 apiece would be less than a quarter of the game's budget. But at least it would give us a good inkling that there was a demand for this game still. After all, some might argue that Age of Wonders and HOMM and other games have filled this niche (I don't personally agree with that)."

"If anyone wants to let others know about this poll please feel free. For Stardock, the risk is too big to acquire the rights (Stardock would own the rights to a Master of Magic 2 so we would have creative control) if there isn't enough demand. I am not certain that there is enough demand for a MOM 2 at this point to justify the expense. We'll be deciding whether to pursue this or not in the next week or two.Release date would be Fall 2006"

The poll that Brad is referring to is at Galciv.com, so pop over and vote if you are interested.

I loved that game, they should indeed make a MoM 2. of course few people remember the game. in fact for about a minute i dint knmow what this game was, and then i remebered. It was a great game and if people could remeber it they proboly would order the sequel.
I cant find the poll

I really love MoM. :bounce:

All those armies of elite paladins stomping across the world map... :D

Great news. :)

Damn... I tried to vote, but couldn't find any way to get into the poll - and, yes, I registered! Do I have to download some programs as well? I can't! (at work, with limited administrative rights... )

Hmm... I can't help I'm afraid, I just logged in and voted. You could try asking on their board.

Good idea ... if I could! That doesn't work either... though it accepted my registration, the functions of a registerd user don't seem to be enabled...frustrating!

I bought it when it was 6 floppies, for DOS. I loved the game!
Torin The Chosen leading Paladins, and Magicians, was unbeatable! :D

Warrax decked out in magic enhancing gear, could slice Torin to pieces with his armor piercing lightning bolts!

Well, then Neomega you have never used Torin, as he has the magic immunity, so all your magic is wasted, So Warrax is going to be the one who is sliced and diced. :D ;) The only way to harm Torin was in HTH, and that is where he excelled!
Hell he had a mana upkeep of 20! More than a lot of global enchantements!

I saw Torin not able to defeat some klackon halberdiers. I am not so sure his hand to hand was that awesome. They just kept missing eachother.

He must have been just summoned then, as i have had him wipe out fully stocked cities by himself. :) Without cheats!

Yeah once you level Torin up and give him some real good equipmen he's VERY hard to kill. a couple of enchanscing spells are always good too.
My favorite type of magic used to be Chaos, because you could cast that chaos enchancement that required no mana and the volcanoes were awesome, especially armegedon or whatever that spell that creates volcanoes all over the map.
Changing the terrain with nature was also very cool.
Death wasnt very good for me, and casting Lycanthropy caused it to crash.
Being a Warlord and casting Cr5usade was awesome cause you can get your units much more powerful.
I loved to build roads evrywhere and that gave me lots of gold it was awesome

I always liked a combo of white and green magic. As i liked the combo of waterwalking, blessing, change terrain, and webs. I also tried to play a race that matched the main color i was playing, High Men for white, Dark Elves for Black, etc etc.

I always viewed MoM as civ meets Magic the Gathering. That is the reason i loved it so much. So IMHO any sequel has a big reputation to live up to, and to be honest i do not think Stardock is up to the task.

No kidding here, I think it is THE best game ever. I love, Master of Magic and Age of Wonders, but they just aren't Master of Magic.

No game had so many different variations.

My favotire game of all time, unfortunately it was too complex and deep for any sort of viable AI to be built that could operate in a timely fashion on a 386 or 486. But now, they can do it.
