About 10,000 years ago, migrating Indians settled in fertile valleys and along the coast of what
is now Chile. The first Europeans to arrive in Chile were Diego de Almagro and his band of Spanish
conquistadors in 1541, who came from Peru in 1535 seeking gold.
The Spanish encountered hundreds of thousands of Indians from various cultures in the area that modern
Chile now occupies. The conquest of Chile was carried out in 1550 by Pedro de Valdivia, one of Francisco Pizarro's
lieutenants. Although the Spanish did not find the extensive gold and silver they sought, they recognized the
agricultural potential of Chile's central valley, and Chile became part of the Viceroyalty of Peru.
A national junta in the name of Ferdinand - heir to the deposed king - was formed on September 18, 1810. The junta
proclaimed Chile an autonomous republic within the Spanish monarchy. A movement for total independence soon won a
wide following. Spanish attempts to impose again arbitrary rule during what was called the Reconquista led to a prolonged
struggle.
Intermittent warfare continued until 1817, when an army led by Bernardo O'Higgins, Chile's most renowned patriot, and
José San Martín, hero of Argentine independence, crossed the Andes into Chile and defeated the royalists. On February
12, 1818, Chile was proclaimed independent.
In 1879 Bolivia put High Taxes to Chilean Saltpeter Refineries, was discovered a Peru-Bolivian Pact against Chile,
Chile was forced to declare war against Peru and Bolivia. Chile Battled whit an army of 2.440 men, They were High
trained Rifleros that fought against 3.000 Bolivian Riflemen and another 7.000 Peruvian Riflemen, After the last
Campaign was over, the war was won by Chile, capturing the strategically cities of Antofagasta, Iquique and Arica.
In 1938 Pedro Aguirre Cerda was elected President with a big support of the people. During his govern he imposed
a great number of educational reforms, he made more than a thousand Schools and he became the most loved President
on the Chilean history, he was called "the president of the poor", because Pedro Aguirre was very close to these
class. He died in his third year of government, in his funeral more than 400.000 people assisted to cried for him.
The country didnt have so much peace, in 1970 Salvador Allende was elected president whit only 33% of the votes,
in his government (1970-1973) Chile entered in chaos a big economical crisis had started. The USA paid to the
opposition parties to make the governor abdicate, but Allende´s loyalty with the country forced him to stay. In
1973 the Minister of Defense, The General Augusto Pinochet, leaded an army and overthrew Allende´s Gobernment
The Air Force Bombarded the Presidential Palace, and after the great battle was over, its reported that Salvador
Allende had committed suicide.
Augusto Pinochet took the government and during his dictatorship, he tortured and killed thousands of Communist and Socialist
Parties´s Members, Pinochet take Chile out of the economical crisis but the culture of the country started fading. In 1989
Pinochet made a plebiscite and because of this plebiscite he was forced to leave the government.
Riflero, the UU:
It replaces Rifleman and has one extra offensive point. Riflero means Rifleman in Spanish. It was one of the Chilean units that fought against Bolivia and Peru in the Pacific War, disputing territories in the Pacific coast. This region is rich of gas and copper. Like result of this war, Bolivia lost its entire coastal region and Bolivia has big revenge feeling against Chile.
