Thanks to Top Gun
In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company founded a shipping station on the Cape of Good Hope. This colony
prospered, but market and work conditions in Cape Town (most of the work being done by slaves) led to a large proportion of
the white population adopting the life of [trekboeren] (wandering farmers). When Britain took control of Cape Colony in 1806,
the Boers soon became disenchanted with British rule, and this disenchantment led to the [Great Trek] when, between 1835 and
1843, roughly 12,000 Boers left the Cape and headed for the empty spaces of the high veld beyond the Orange and Vaal rivers.
Eventually, under the terms of the Sand River Convention (1852), the British agreed to recognize the independence of these
settlers in what came to be the Orange Free State and Transvaal.
British interest in control of the Transvaal region was re-kindled by the discovery in the late 1860s of gold and diamond
deposits along the Vaal river, and in 1877 Britain succeeded in annexing the regional athough a Boer uprising regained
independence after British forces were defeated at Majuba Hill (1881).
In 1886, further extensive gold deposits were discovered in the Witwatersrand area, and this led to a massive influx of -
primarily British and German - miners and fortune-seekers. These [uitlanders], as they became known, quickly came to
outnumber the Afrikaner population and although their presence served as a great stimulus to the economy of the region, the
Transvaal government - now led by {Paul Kruger} - refused to grant them voting rights.
This disenfranchisement of the uitlanders quickly became a major bone of contention in Britain, and the tension was raised
further by subsequent events, the most notable of which was Leander Starr Jameson's infamous "raid" in Decemeber 1895 - an
abortive attempt at stirring up an uitlander rebellion. Although the issues which apparently divided the sides could have
been resolved relatively quickly had the will to do so existed, the intransigence of Kruger coupled with his (justified)
suspicions of British motives and the determination of the British to use the franchise issue as the pretext for
precipitating a crisis, meant that war was virtually inevitable.
This inevitable, but at the same time wholly unnecessary, war finally broke out in October 1899 after a demand by Kruger
for the removal of British troop reinforcements was rejected and the Orange Free State, under its president Marthinus Steyn,
joined to fight alongside the Transvaal. Although the Afrikaners achieved some early successes against not notably well-led
British forces, they frittered away much of their initial advantage (of having their troops immediately on hand) by not
following up these successes properly. Once the British were able to bring up sufficient force, sheer weight of numbers made
the final outcome inevitable and the two capitals of Bloemfontein and Pretoria fell to the British in the summer of 1900.
After the fall of Pretoria, the conflict, continued but took on the nature of a guerrilla war.
During this guerrilla war, the Afrikaners' chief weapon was the Horse Commando. Although these commandos had been used
during the more formal phase of the war, they came into their own as guerrilla units. Swift and elusive, they were a constant
thorn in the flesh of the the British forces.
Eventually, the strain of maintaining this guerrilla war proved too much for the resources and resolve of the Afrikaner
republics and in May 1902 the Treaty of Vereeniging finally ended the independence of both the Afrikaner republics.
After the war, Britain gradually restored a degree of autonomy to the republics and, in 1910, became constituent Provinces
of the new Union of South Africa, a status they retained when this Union became the Republic of South Africa in 1961.
Generally speaking, the history of Afrikaner rule in the 20th Century was not a happy one. The strict policy of apartheid,
denying almost all rights to the majority non-white population, had always been part of the Afrikaner philosophy from the
very early days of the [trekboeren], but its perpetuation led to increasing international condemnation and the consequent
political and economic isolation of the Republic.
By the late 1980s, the days of minority Afrikaner rule were clearly numbered and eventually, in 1993, the then president
F.W. de Klerk bowed to the inevitable, and called elections in which [all] the people of South Africa would be eligible to
participate, thus writing himself into the history books and consigning Afrikaner rule to the same pages.

Horse Commando, the UU:
It replaces Cavalry, has 2 extra defensive points, 1 less offensive point, attack two time per turn and cost 10 shields more.

Bonus : Religious/Expansionist
Unique Unit : Horse Commando - replaces Cavalry, 5/5/3 with ZoC and Blitz

find it here
(scroll down to the Mountie. With Afrikaner civ colors, he'll morph into the Horse Commando. Unless of course Bebro will find the time to make an original Boer Horse Commando unit... ;) )

^During the [Boer War (1899-1902)] fought between Britain and the Afrikaner republics of Orange Free State and Transvaal,
the horse commando proved itself to be a valuable guerrilla-type unit. Consisting of a relatively small group
of men, armed (typically) with Martini-Henry rifles and mounted on small horses or Basuto ponies, these commandos proved
to be swift and elusive. Ably led by men such as [Christiaan de Wet] and [Jan Smuts], they were capable of sudden, unexpected
and daring raids (Smuts' attack on the mining station at Okiep in the Western Cape is typical example) and proved to be a constant
thorn in the side of the then British commander, Lord Kitchener.

Well, I posted all the information I had. Maybe if I come across a good picture of the HorseCommando I'll post it here. ('cause I still harbor hopes that maybe Bebro could make a real nice unit for us so that we don't haev to recycle the Mountie - which has already been recycled as the US Cavalry).

But anyway, I an't wait to see your LH art, CivArmy! :D

Awesome informations Top Gun, thanks!!!
- do u still have that leader image? I can't find it, post again
- about the leaders: I choice the firt five ones to military and the two last ones to scientific, did I do a good choice?

Paul Kruger is here

I think your first try at him looks a little too young. Make him more middle aged with dirty blond, grayed hair...

CivArmy.. your great leader assignments are fine - even though all of them are political/military leaders. One truly scientific "leader" from South Africa (who is also of Boer/Afrikaner descent) would be Christiaan Barnard, the cardiologist who performed the first open-heart surgery back in 1968.

this will do great for a boer war scenario i'm thinking a about

Do u know more one or two? Maybe three scientifc leaders could be good.
When I have new arts of industrial age (with changes), I'll post ;)

Christiaan Barnard
Philip Blaaiberg
Gerard Moerdyk
Vincent Oliphant

Note: All the other leaders posted earlier are military/political leaders!

Yeah, the leaderhead looks more and more like him. The facial features (wrinkes etc) and his expressions are perfect.

But I have a few additional suggestions:

I posted a contemporary portrait of him in here.
Even though I don't think he should be as old as in this portrait, I think he could use a couple more years of aging. It will probably be enough if you lightened up his beard quite a bit (make it greyish) and also a little less well-manicured (in other words: make it longer and a little wilder.)

What do you think?

Considering that much of the Afrikaners were farmers and what have you, shouldn't the Afrikaner civilization have one of their traits be Agricultural? I'd say religious can stay, but the Transvaal and Oranje Vrystaat never expanded beyond their borders first established by them in the interior and then by the British in 1910.
