Well, that´s the spetznaz soldier. Me and Steph are still working on it but we are close to completion (also depends on how long the sounds take). The weapon is a AN-94, it´s supposed to be a russian unit in the game. The final version will also include a paradrop animation, together with the movement bonuses (ptw only) in tundras this will be some kind of special commando unit. I won´t add a bic file and unit stats this time because the unit is mainly for the mod makers around here who need custom stats anyway.

But we will need sounds for it. I can do some basic sounds like fortify or maybe fidget. For the other sounds I could use some help from you. (Hello Neomega? ;) )

(I will post the two missing animations soon.)

Update: fidget animation added

What you should do is have some russian person here make some voice sounds for you (in russian language). Just some good words, no cheesy stuff like Duke Nukem.

But I really like it, it's very good. I hope you do the other's aswell, SAS, Delta Force, etc, are you planning to?

I'll use this beauty for a special forces unit. Nice work!

Great idea Snoopy!
So if anyone here is able to speak russian (preferably as first language) and would like to provide some lines for this unit please e-mail me or send me a private message. Of course you will get full credit for the sounds (if you wish so).

We won´t do more spec ops units (we just took the spetznaz because that were the first pictures Steph found) but rather "normal" soldiers like a soldier in sand camo and an AK or a "chasseur alpine" with FAMAS rifle (plus a soldier in forest camo- that are the three units we plan to do next)

I could whip up a soldier in desert camo in about 10 minutes using your modern infantry honestly. If you look in Kinboats dragon preview thread, it's laid out how there. Basically it is replacing colors in the palette of the story boards. Real easy ;)

What kind of hat is he wearing? A beret? It looks a bit indistinct.

looks like the hood of his coat to me....

By the way- incredible work Balou, your work is unbelievably good

tpasmall is right, it´s his hood. I did not make up any details, the unit is modelled after pictures of real (spetznaz) soldiers.

Neomega:
At first we thought about this too but then we decided do redo the whole model with new animation. This also gives us the ability to equip the unit different, e.g. the chasseur alpine will have a much bigger backpack, some kind of vest and a Famas rifle. That´s not possible with just changing the palette (or even new textures).

Thanks for your comments!

Some time down the line, not immediatly, it would be great to have some bombardment animations for infantry units. I know some of you may be going, what the #^$% is this dude smokin'? but perhaps an animation of the infantry unit throwing a grenade into the next frame, or (more to my liking) setting down a satchel charge/explosive case would be helpful and representative of real world spetznatz capabilities. Anyways, just a thought.

What the @#*& is this dude smoking?!?

Sorry, couldn't help it.

All hail the immortal Walter Sobchek! One of the greatest characters ever put to script. Good quote, Scipio.

"I can get you a toe dude, there are ways you don't want to know about...I could get you a toe by 3 o'clock."

Cool unit! I like the smoky attack and salute animation.

I see a litlte mummy in this Spetznaz unit. :)

I'll make the voices, if you buy me a microphone. :p

Thank you!
Here is the drop animation:

It´s similar to the one from the modern infantry but the landing is a bit better. (I used the paratrooper drop animation for the parachute)

Scipio Africanu:
I know what you mean but I don´t think that infantry should have bombard ability because even tanks don´t have it in civ3.
It would be nice to see the infantry units run around and throw grenades, get into prone positions etc. but that would take so much time to do and all we would have is a more interesting attack animation.
I have no idea how we could put explosives into the game. (or is there a mine layer ability in ptw?)

The smoke in the attack animation took a very long time to make, especially the south direction gave me a lot of trouble. In the game the smoke looks similar to the rifleman shot. (more white than grey) I´m quite proud of it but I will do the muzzle flash different for the next units.

Eli:
No no, I can´t buy you a microphone. Maybe a friend of yours can lend you one for a short time.

You guys need to have your own equipment, I can´t support you with any hardware.

Balou, I need you to teach me how to make units. I am an artist already, just don't know how to use the damn 3D programs. What one are you using? I have Lightwave 7, is that a good enough program?

I have learned the basics, but I have questions, like polygons, I always connect the wrong ones by accident coz it's so confusing seeing all these polygons, and how do you animate???

If only I knew how to make 3D stuff, I could pump out good units and join the rest of you pro 3D makers. :)

Great animation, but russia "spetznaz" unit looks differently. I propose to give him a green camo and "cheery" or "blue" color barret.
