You want to know something and can't find it in the FAQ?

Ask here!

Don't bother to read through the entire thread, just ask and there's lots of people willing to help.

Please DO read throught the relevant section of the FAQ thread (which is also a sticky) before you post though.

mods: Thanx! :goodjob:

Aggie: I have had 4 turn stretches surprisingly often. I actually EXPECT them.

I think the sink prob is 50:50 in ocean, so it is roughly 6% for 4 turns.

btw, please update your signature ;)

Just saw that screenshot with 3 cities next to each other
all having iron and coal!
Never have been that lucky... but it leads to the question:
What happens if coal or iron vanishes from IW city?
I think (already built) IW and its benefits will stay,
just guessing here. I've never seen these resources disappearing
from IW site's city. Maybe IW even "protect" coal/iron.
Besides, if IW is still in its building progress while coal/iron
disappears, I do also guess that you can continue building it.
(I had a game where I could continue building unready tanks in
cities when oil trade ran out.)
Has anyone made some observations about this issue (or similar stuff
like while building FP underrunning minimal city amount, battle med, etc)?

Grille: an existing IW stays and works. An IW being built can be completed. BUT you cannot start producing one.

So if you can build IW, start it right away!

IW doesn't in any way change how res appear/disappear.

All other things: what you have, works. What you started can be completed.

Yes, and this can be combined to a general rule:

You need to fulfill all prerequisites to start building a building/wonder/unit/terrain improvement or whatever. But as soon as you have started building it, any and all of the prerequisites may me lost without any detrimental effect. The same is of course true after the thing is built.

Ex: You start an Iron Works, and the turn after, both the coal and iron disappears, but you are free to finish building it - and will get the full effect. However, if you change production to another wonder for one second, you will not be able to change back to IW.

Ex: You lack coal, but trade for it. The last of the 20 turns you have it, you can start laying railorads in 100 different tiles and start building factories, and you get to finish everything.

So this is like the THIRD newbie post?? And for the THIRD time they forgot to make it a "sticky" thread??

[edit] BTW I've been playing Civ III for almost a year now daily, and I have only been able to build IW twice...

Just as a sidenote: that was on a custom-made map. On a random map (with normal rules) you won't see so much iron in such a small area.

sabo10, this is IIRC noewbie thread 6 or 7, and the mods are still asleep. Give them a few hours! If you were at home you#d never have noticed this thread until it was sticky ;)

on the IW: what kind of maps do you play? Try relatively many civs and little land, that should help!

I prefer standart map size, around 7 civs,
set to pangea, medium age etc. or all to random;
would say there's at least one possible IW-location on every map.
Have built IW often.
Maybe you all finish off ai in good time, so...

I feel a bit stupid to ask that, but I have never found a tip for that problem:

After seeing the intro video for about 500 times now, it's finally getting a bit annoying... I always interrupt it with ESC, but is there a way to skip it alltogether during game start?? Make an entry in the Civ.ini file, maybe? Which??

Thanks a lot!

Maybe it's more a human factor: you want to build your cities at the best possible site. Coal and iron appear in hills and mountains (coal also in jungle? (sorry, my head is filled with hobbit snot atm)), where the human player wants to build at sites with a lot of grassland. I think there are more possible IW sites than cities with both in their city box.

I just finished the Imperialism scenario, and on the western hemisphere there are about three possible IW locations. But then again, those aren't placed random.

For PTW, edit your ptw.ini file to include the line
PlayIntro=0

For Vanilla C3, rename the file intro.bik in your Civ3\art\movies folder to anything else. You could delete it, but I prefer to rename it.

Welcome to CFC haegint :)

From the FAQ:

Delete or rename the movie files, they are in your Civ3 directory below Art\Movies\

I don't know what it is called, maybe something like 'intro'. You could always just play the files and see which one is the intro.

Note: This was originally referenced in relation to the game crashing on the video intro, but there is no reason you can't do it anyway. Now you mention it, I think I will do this tonight. Thanks :D

Edit: Arrgh! Beaten to it... :wallbash:

Stapel - It can be slightly annoying because I keep my screen res when playing civ3 or ptw. The videos play in 640x480 (I think), and resize your display if it isn't in that already.

This is especially annoying if you are constantly firing up one or the other, whilst running something else in the foreground. Just as you are typing a post everything goes weird, and you have to alt-tab to the intro and press mouse, space or escape, then alt-tab back.
