Automated Elvish workers question

In one of the previous patches I saw that elvish workers knew they wouldn't cut down a forest to make an improvement. I assume this means they know better what improvement would be good for a tile and they build it there. Does this still apply when you have the "workers leave forests" option on? will they still build on the forests? I remember elven workers properly automating (I know, everyone believes automation is the devil around here. It's still an issue cause its the same AI that the computer uses) was a big issue before.

I read somewhere that the built improvements in the forests, meaning you could have a farm and a forest in the same plot. ever seen it happen though.
