Barbarian spawn rate increased?

I was trying out my first game of BNW today when I noticed that the barbarian spawn rate seems to have increased SHARPLY. I did not turn on Raging Barbarians, yet there were barbarians spawning practically every 1-2 turns. As soon as I would kill one barbarian entering my territory in 2 turns, another would wander in from the same camp.

Has anyone else noticed a pattern of increased barbarians?

Played 2 1/2 BNW games so far, I did notice a LOT of barb activity in one game (I actually checked I hadn't accidentally set raging barbs on) but not in the other two - so, in answer to your question: maybe

Yes, the spawn rate increased, the barbarian units are more advanced and a new land trade route will always spawn barbarians if there is fog of war. Protect your caravans!

Yup.

I have raging barbarians on by default and even I have noticed the increase.

This kind of intensity was kind of rare even with raging barbarians enabled for gods n kings.
