Best Initial Strategy?

Early in the game, the only wonders you should worry about are the pyriminds and lighthouse if you are on a island. Go for Marco Polo then the next level of Wonders like Mike's and Adam Smith.
 
I wondered the same thing, but see ProfG's answer in post 2. I guess he planned to build the Great Library (etc) the hard way, and the low production of his small city made it even harder.
 
Post #21 is a response to the OP that states in not the same terms "you should not build the Great Library".

The OP asked 2 questions. Post #2 answered both.

If anything is there a rule of thumb on the build order? I.E Settler, warrior, settler, caravan, warrior, caravan, caravan, caravan, settler, caravan????
 
I would definitely build a warrior first, since you never know when there might be another civ in the vicinity, and in the mood for easy and undefended pickings.
