Blender learning curve

So, I got my grubby filthy hands upon Blender. As it is light, open-source and it has a decent enough manual, I actually did not give up on it from the first time I opened it - as opposed to other 3D graphics programs. Which means my experience in 3D modelling is still zilch.

Now, don't get me wrong, this is not (yet ;) ) a call out for help. Unless you would like to become my personal monitor, free off charge - offcourse :p . Nah, just kidding ;) I'll first give myself some time to study :)

I was just wondering, how long did it take for the ones who use this program, to actually have learned enough to start making your own unit/building?

I spent about 4 hours just getting through the "static gingerbread-man" tutorial, and still it's not finished. Am I right that I'm looking at quite a long learning curve with this program?

Well, I hope you guys can enlighten me a bit.
