Can some one tell me how civ 4 was the first month

I hisitated buying civ 4 untill 3 years after release. Can some one please tell me how civ 4 was before patching. I still hope that civ 5 in future patches will become an even better game, then those of us who still keep civ 5 can gloat in the faces of those who sold it .
