Can you tell who a city used to belong to?

Attila had a continent to himself and now has a boatload of cities.

I'd like to liberate any that were 'taken, not built' but I don't recognize any of the names. It's not like I'm seeing 'Paris' owned by Attila.

Is there any way to do this short of taking the city and seeing if you get a 'liberate' option?

Pick up the Enhanced User Interface (EUI) mod (from here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=512263) and you'll have a way - the original owner will be instantly visible. It is UI only mod, no gameplay changes. You can use it on already started games. And it is amazing.

Then it is not likely that any of those cities were ever puppets.

The AI almost never annexes cities. Puppets have a very distinct icon.

I've seen a lot Ai do it anexing.
