Convert LAN game to PBEM?

I can't remember if this is possible or not. A friend and I started a LAN game which we would now like to load into the PBEM format. However when I load the game it keeps blanking out his player selection and will only allow me to choose Computer or Closed. I know that we could have started the game as PBEM and then gone to LAN and back again, but can you not go straight from LAN to PBEM? Thanks for any help!
