Prince difficulty, standard speed, normal size map. Did shuffle and got an arch map.

Spoiler :

I know I screwed up with Poverty point not on the coast, the extra gold enticed me but losing harbor/lighthouse for it isnt worth it

Ive also settled the island to the left of my capital

Spoiler :

and here is what i have remaining on my island

Spoiler :

The random number generator hates me, as I keep losing triremes to barb galleys somehow. However I was successful in getting GLH, I beelined to the colossus, and even got a great engi to get a free pyramids.

My capital has a ridiculous amount of food so will be a GP farm (new to city specialization, but then one seemed obvious) and figured Parthenon would be a good build. And it looks like I may even get a great engi for the GL.

I just popped literature, but Im sure i am the first to it so waiting to see if I get the engi first before building GL. I should probably drop out of currency and go machinery-> optics. I also need to push out triremes in the meantime, the barbs are out of control.

Any critiques and suggestions? City placements? The allure of wonders (along with the relative safety of land availability due to isolation) has hurt my infrastructure somewhat, but between GLH, Colossus, and the gold my commerce has been fine so far. Looks like Ill be going for science victory.

Good job getting GLH. On archipelago I would pretty much always prioritize it.

I might have settled Poverty Point 1NE, but its not a big deal. Either way, it will be tough not having any food there. I would farm everything you can.

Using a GE to rush the GLib seems overkill to me, considering you have marble. If you are running Mids-enabled Rep, then why not settle him in cap? Missing GLib seems unlikely.

Parthenon is a good idea but I would have maybe considered building it somewhere else to limit GA pollution.

my main critique would be scouting I guess. The strength of GLH/archipelago is in overseas trade routes, so go get you some! An early workboat or two can really help on this, though at this point you will need triremes. So far, you've only met one AI and have lots of unscouted coastline.

I would prioritize new cities. With GLH trade routes they basically pay for themselves.

City placements?
Unless theres some jungled improvable tile(s) up north Mesa Verde wasn't worth settling yet. It would have been a lot more profitable to have settled another island, the one east of Mound City (1N of the clams looks attractive) for example.
Chaco Canyon doesn't look a great 4th(?) city due to a lack of food, but its probably due to not having explored.

On that, there should have been a lot more exploration done by now (fishing boats!), both to find sites worth settling and to find valuable foreign trade routes (especially with GLH!).
My capital has a ridiculous amount of food so will be a GP farm
Then it should have specialists running by now, long before now in fact! Having the Pyramids and not running a number of specialists is nothing but a waste.

Do you have any saves you can upload? Of 1AD would be nice to see more about whats going on and has been going on in your game, and 4000BC to allow for shadows?

post.....a.........save

you can fit a city between Cahokia and PP by the way (clam/iron)

Only problem I see with PP is that if I'm settling that city (I assume away from clam you did not realize was there yet) then I would get the gold in the first ring and work it immediately, especially in a low food city. That gold mine plays off big time the sooner you get it working.

You settled away from both golds in a city with no food resources. It took at least 15 to 20 turns to not only start a gold mine but even work the mine for extra commerce. That is a VERY long time not to get something out of that city.

^^^these are the kinda of decisions that make a difference on higher levels

Why are you farming a forested grass tile while a library is in process? Chop the forest first.

Don't know about save posting, this is the first time posting this sort of thing here, and wasn't planning on doing it...but I am glad I did.

I knew the clam was there, placed city to get it in the range and had a work boat for it when the borders expanded

Good point (and it ended up being a merchant anyway).

Yeah, I definitely dropped the ball here. The barbs didnt help the cause, but I wasnt persistent enough

Settled a city on the right island. Napolean beat me to the island, and took this spot. I fgured the wheat + 3 plantations (the spices were an event gift) would be good enough food/commerce. Losing 5 tiles due to mountains sucks, but dont have a lot to work with. I hate Napolean for his avoidance of that food tile, AI is worse than I am at city placement.

Spoiler :

Have a settler en route to this island. Plan is settle east of the mountain and get some (naval) production out of that spot, I dont really have a strong production city. Id like to run Caste System to get more scientists going, but cant afford to put down the whip.

Spoiler :

Is it wise to delay research of astronomy to milk the colossus longer? I havent found any land worth settling across the ocean yet (and still have a couple cities I can found closer to home as it is), and no one else even has machinery yet. Going to need to build up my navy as a defensive measure so wont put it off too long, but I see no immediate need. Im also building some heavy footman to send to Snaketown to take Lyon, which is lightly defended with no hopes of reinforcements due to a war between Napolean and Orange William.

I hope you meant west of the mountain. I certainly hope you would get that fish first and certainly not strand it.

^^^You know, actually that was my bad. My train of thought wasn't equating "mountain" with "peak" in this context. I always think of those things as peaks and the hills/mountains as interchangeable. I see where the OP was settling now. However, better to get food in first ring unless creative (or you have Music)

I do have music, and never even thought to do that...Assuming you are meaning to settle and produce culture until the borders expand?

Yes, that's what I meant. If you have music, then your spot sounds fine. Make sure you have worker and a work boat on the way.
