Digital hash (graphics) after 20 min

AMD 2800, ASUS A8V MoBo, 1G ECC Mem, Nvidia 6800 GT 256M graphics.
After a while, game always suddenly locks with screen total random crosshatch garbage. Must reboot, nothing works. XP Pro w all current updates. 1.52 patch did not help. System runs ton of games without problems. I don't see other postings that look like my problem, but the range of problems noted is SAD.

Any Good Ideas?

What helped me for a while was this, it's really worth a try:

1) turn off every advanced setting in the Nvidia controller (AA, filtering etc.)
2) download the December DirectX version.
3) turn all graphics to medium in the Civ 4 option menu.

Same here, graphical nightmare on madison street. And it only started after this game, particularly after patch 1.52
