Do extra luxury copies help additional cities?

This has been a point of question for a while - if you have two copies of a luxury, and eight cities - are all 8 cities getting amenities from that luxury or just 4? I thought people were saying 8 but the manual says: "Only one source of a specific luxury
provides amenities, shared with the four neediest cities in your empire. For example, if you have
2 Citrus resources improved around your capital, only the first will be providing amenities to
your empire." Which seems the opposite...

Well, from all the streams i thought more luxuries would help cities beyond the first 4 but maybe the streamers didn't fully test this.
If it's right that additional copies don't help you that would limit your amenities from luxuries severely and could affect the current view on "always going wide"
Interesting find!

I believe so yes...1 copy will provide 1 amenity to four cities. 2 copies of the resource will provide 1 amenity to 8 cities...so multiples of four (cities) seems to be ideal.

In about 6 hours! :)

Haven't really seen it in any of the streams...happiness/amenities never seems to be an issue...but then again it is prince level.

Yeah that was my impression as well, but then, reading the manual waiting for it to be available, I saw the opposite!

Anyone of the lucky players already above 4 cities and can confirm that the 2nd resource does NOT give amenities to the 5th-8th city? Because that's how I read it in the manual...

When in doubt, the manual is gibberish. It was finalized long before the game was.

Thanx for the answer not helping me very much... I'm trying it out myself! Now! :D
Keep us posted. It's been widely believed here that additional copies provide amenities to cities 5-8, but have not seen any confirmation myself so I've remained skeptical.

I just got to the part in the manual where it states that "Civilian units such as Builders, Settlers, and Great People cannot initiate attacks. If attacked while on their own, these types of units are sent back to their territory of origin.", so I'm inclined to believe you!

To me the relevant paragraph in the manual is ambiguous. It says "each luxury resource" ; not "each unique luxury resource". Nor does it give an example.

The good news is now that's it's been released in all 3 zones, it ought to be simple to test. Just improve two copies of the same luxury and found five cities and wait a turn and then look at the details of each city.

Ok I am 99% sure that 2nd copy doesn't help. I have 6 cities, 2x Ivory, 1x Gypsum, and I am Suzerian of Buenos Aires, which mean I get 1 amenity from each unique bonus resource. I have 7 of those. At the moment, I am getting 4,3,2,2,2,2 amenities from Luxuries, which is 4+4+7 (Ivory, Gypsum, bonus resources) and not 6+4+7 (which would be the case if 2nd Ivory was relevant). So lets go trade it.

EDIT: 100%. Traded Ivory for something, and now I have 4,3,3,3,3,3 in my cities (i.e. 4x3 from Lux, 7 from bonus).

This is Moderator Action: <snip> stupid enough game design that I'm actually not miffed at all that I havent purchased the game yet, and currently have no pressing plans to. Thanks for exposing the idiocy.

Yes, amenities are from unique versions, not multiples. The community went way off the rails on this one and the manual is actually correct.

So 4 city is back?

No. 4 cities is your new 'minimum', not 'maximum'. If you have less that 4 cities, you 'waste' amenities since you only get 1/city.

This system is actually better than previous games. You just lack the knowledge of why, and well, exposed yourself.

Actually, if that is the case, this is just Civ V happines model with effects personalised per city.

Not sure if It is an improvement then... :nono:

I think it's a missed opportunity to make extra copies valuable. I think everyone was on board with that. But it doesn't ruin the game, and it's not idiotic.

It means you can go wide or tall, but it'll be hard to go wide and tall.
