Hey guys, I have played civ since its first release but im not terribly good at it, no idea why ethier. ANyways I wanted to know if you hardcore guys automate your works or manually control them? Also any tips on how to keep pace with other civs score wise. I play large maps with like 10 civs at noble level and i always stay with them till about the renissance era then they gain like 200 to 300 points on me. Im building up my cities, trying to expand, and having a decent military, but I cant keep with them. I have only won one game, and that was on a duel map with me as the romans and the legionaire kicking serious ass early in the game.

No I don't automate. If I were to do so, I would certainly disable their ability to destroy previously existing improvements.

If you're not that great, then automation might actually be more efficient. But this is a great suggestion, don't let them destroy improvements that have already been built.

I usually automate one or two to for building the trade network. Sometimes they've even caught a resource I overlooked. Otherwise I micromanage the heck out of 'em.

Sometimes the game has a weird way of handling the "route to mode" function where it wants to build a road in a really round-about way using existing roads instead of just building a new road to something that's really close by. But it's easy to work around this by directing the workers to a mid-point first.

I would suggest that new players have their workers automated while they concentrate on learning the rest of the game. And allow them to replace current improvements so they will upgrade with windmills, etc when they become available. However, once you know what you are doing then they is a benefit to controlling them all yourself. The AI will tend to give every city a little of everything, but I think there is a great benefit to specializing your cities. Put a farm on every square around one city and fill it with specialists to pump great people, cottages around another to max science, etc. I might let one auto build trade routes in case I missed something but in general I control them myself now.

I also think that automating workers is a good idea for new players, it is what I did when I started. However, as you start to get better, the opening moves with workers can actually be very important to acquire resources and to explore new sites to build cities. The AI usually doesnt do a very good job with the workers.

Honestly I think new players should not automate workers. I never automated mine in Civ3 even when I first started out. Understanding worker actions, the terrain, and how exactly it affects your cities is like the basic core of the game. You need to understand that to truly understand the rest of it.

I've never liked to automate anything in civ. (workers, govorners, ect).

Then again I'm a micro-manage freak who likes total control over all my units.
My opinion is that my decision making ability is a lot better than that of the AI. Sure it was somtimes a drag to give 50 workers orders every turn it civ III, but, I think that they fixed this problem in civ IV. With less workers the drag is not much of an issue.

Plus, think of all the neat worker actions you are missing out on!

I think if you are new to the game and wish to get better you can't automate workers.
