I won a few duel maps in Civ 5 with a very simple strategy. Build units from the start, and rush the other opponent. Taking the capital wins the game.
I tried my first duel map (Gemini) and am struggling to finish off the opponent. My forces have to cross about 15 tiles of water just to get to his landlocked capital; he settled 4 hexes away from the coast, so my naval strength means nothing. I've taken all his other cities, but his capital seems very hardened, defense about 63. Every time I try an air strike, my planes die in the first sortie.
What am I missing? Are some maps just harder than others? What are typical win times/turn numbers for Duel maps?
