Hi,

Does anybody remember the Imperialism strategy games from FrogCity/SSI from 1997 and 1999. They were great turn based strategy at their times, however aren't sold anymore and the first one especially features poor graphics. Also diplomacy, economical models and battle were not always satisfactory. Nevertheless great strategy gems.

We are a group of fans that want to achieve an open source remake of the original Imperialism game with a modern touch. We need volunteers for coding, artwork or just feedback. We have a very first version out just featuring a simple terrain editor. I am a big Civilization and Imperialism fan from germany and a programmer.

If you are interested please consider joining our forum.

Thank you for the interest. I would be happy to answer any question about the project here.

Btw. other resources about this great game are:
Wikia Wiki http://imperialism.wikia.com/wiki/Imperialism_Game_Wiki

Yahoo Group (Joining not possible) http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Imp_list/

In the first post of this thread I said that the original is not sold anymore. This changed actually today and GOG.com / Ubisoft re-published the game for 6$. Link A working multi-player mode and the soundtrack as extra is included - they say.

I think this is quite unexpected but also very good news and gives everyone the opportunity to play the original game (again).

You should try Victoria II.
Nah. Victoria II is a simulator. You can... how to say it... push buttons, move sliders etc but it doesn't really do much. You just observe how game calculates some seemingly random numbers somewhere deep within a game engine and shows you some random results of calculations... and sometimes it actually accounts for your actions too... well, if you're lucky enough.

Imperialism is a real strategy game with a solid game rules where a player is in control, not a game engine.

To an extent many strategy games are simulations - they simulate a living world. Even Civ does it.

In our Imperialism remake the strategy aspect should be the most important thing. You should be in control and the historical aspect is only for game immersion.

Since I did not play Victoria II I don't know how it is there. But to take another example from Paradox: Hearts of Iron series feels like a historical simulation, but apart from the scripted events I still feel like being in control of everything.

It's now four months since the first release and I want to report a bit on the progress so far. There is progress and the development team has increased by size but it's also still a long way to go and contributors/volunteers are always welcome.

So what's new in 0.1.2:
- Windows Installer, tested under Linux
- Background music playing
- Improved map including rivers, borders, province names
- More art contribution and many minor fixes.

Head to the download page for details. Some screenshots are attached.

Btw. the original Imperialism 2 is available for buying again (for example at gog.com). We hope this will increase interest in Imperialism-like strategy games.
