Good luck without mountain.

Great first post!! Nice Job!!

Question:
In your screenshot your obviously using a MOD,...I thought MODs were banned for HOF submits....Am I missing something here? Cause I have been using nothing, but the bare bones basic game and it would be great to add if possible, mainly just MODS for convenience/visualization/organization....Nothing that give a advantage.

So, have I been missing out, OR are NO MODs permitted?

After a couple of terrible tundra starts, this time I wandered around, until I found a decent mountain, well it was a range, so no go, but just south was Mt Kilimanjaro. Settled on the coast beside it, and took faith from NW for my pantheon...

It also meant I forward settled on dido... Composite bows took care of her capital, while Boudicca took care of her northern city...

Still long drawn out game... Finished on turn 385...

Highest science I had was 785 a turn.

Went full tradition, then into patronage, down the right side to get science from city states. then into rat. Took order, and got coal and aluminum from city states, had to use spies to keep it.

Two Level 3 policies in order, then extra happiness from patronage, and then into commerce for the science from banks... then extra happiness again...

Don't know if I will try again.

Spoiler :

Your the best!!!....Thanks Bro, excited to try it!

One more thing,....How do you do a Screen Shot like the one you used, I searched...But couldn't find the information...??? Appreciate the help...:)

Steam screenshot. Set in on in Steam > Setting > In game > Set screenshots folder.

Then Hit F12 in the game. A pop up appears in down left side.
Default folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\72066946\760\remote\8930\screenshots

rolled a nice map, so gave it a try. It was fun up to say, industrial, but after that, it was really really boring. I got astro t101. Used oxford to astro, and rationalism finisher and GS to get plastics early - t180.

Spoiler :

I did not have coal, and there were some CS who had coal, but they improved the tiles to mines so I cannot give them 200g to improve... what the heck.... I had to wait 100+ turns and finally could get coal at t285 when another AI finally stole industrialization from me. God. I didn't even think after t200 - I just clicked next turn like a robot.

I knew that it was not optimal, but I just wanted to finish this stupid international station project. 4500+ hammer? I am pretty sure that sci focus and bulbing GS would have let me finish 5+ turns earlier.

Spoiler :

t299 finish. Lots of science leftover.

I had to sell airport to avoid culture victory and didn't vote for diplo win (t260...)

this is my first and last game (and prolly last OCC). Some tips if you want to give it a try:

1. You will go freedom and just rush buy spaceship parts, so production is not a real issue - science is all that matters. Don't build wonders like eiffel tower, and just produce science and rush buy necessary buildings.

2. Do NOT put your spy at the capital and let other civs steal your techs. AIs are abysmal, so stealing tech from you is their main source of teching. "Helping" AIs good for you b/c 1. cheaper and more effective RAs, 2. they get resource techs like industrialization earlier.

3. RAs are not that bad. I do not mean that it is good - it is still horrible, but you have tons of cash anyway and you are going to play peaceful game anyway, so why not use some cash to save 1-3 turns? I even just gave gold for them to do RAs in this game. Haven't done RAs for a long long time so even forgot how much they cost.

How did you got astronomy so fast?I followed all the rules and got it barely by 125 turn.
Got terrain full with grassland, tho no wheat and other +3 tiles, build it with following order:
monument, scout, shrine, granary, great library, national college and after tried temple of artermis but failed,so then went hanging gardens and after that hagia sophia.
On science went with writing first, then psiholophsy with great library, then mathematics, and after that directly to education/astronomy.
For pantheon i picked +10 growth, religion +1 food to shrines and temples.
And on social policy filled entire tradition tree.

well, you need a good starting spot.. you need petra in most cases.

and you don't build monument - open with 2 scouts and try to get culture ruin. At this difficulty level, there are tons of ruins, so I even ignore shrine and try to get faith ruin at T20 or after (save 1-2 ruins around t18-20 if possible)

Ok i changed build order to scout-scout-monument-granary-GL-TA-HG-HS
and it works as you said, got nice culture/tech/fate boost with it.
But despise all those boosts,i fixed astronomy discovery only by one turn, could be how city is not growing fast enough due bad terrain? And when it comes to petra,so far haven't got terrain which would be full with grassland and just one or two desert tiles, there was only terrain where there was all desert.

Tried one more and this time turn 122 astronomy, without getting any boost,so i'l guess to make that work it will be needed following:
1.Good food terrain,with more +3 food tiles
2.Getting faith/culture/gold boost on ruins, faith especially important due +10% food pantheon(i used also sun god pantheon which gave +3 food tho not sure is that good for long term)
3.have enough gold to immediately buy university
4.Get culture/maritime cs allies early(seems culture allies are more important so we can get tradition filled asap)
And choosing in map settings 3 billions year/hot is good combo as first one gives a lot of mountains and second one deset/jungle/bananas/citrus,jungle also good for boosting science.

@crocivfanatic

that city position is pretty bad for OCC... tundra and not that many resource tiles.

t124 astro at that map is actually fast enough. Yet, you should get some units to def yourself at least.

change settings to hot/arid/3 billion years (as you may already know) and reroll until you get a nice desert+river+mountain start. Or, when mine gets published (sometime 15th or 16th), try with that initial starting file.

at this difficulty level, barbs are stronger than other civs - make sure you build/buy at least 2 archers. After cleaning up places close to your cap, you can use them to do CS barb quests. Once you friend/ally military CS, you will get enough gifts and no further need for building/buying additional units.

Yes that is correct, desert+river+mountain but i think so far didn't got that combo, tho this hot/3 billion years should have much bigger chance to get such combo.
And when it comes to barbs, that is indeed a problem if you get position where there is no neighborhood civs,as then you can get constantly harassed. But if you get position which is surrounded by mountains, have neighborhood civs or full with jungle/hills,they are no threat as in this last map which i tried.Possible how on hot/3 billion years combo they wont be threat ever.

Also,is there a mathematical way to determine what pantheon would be best?At the moment +10% growth seems best, tho pantheons sun god(which give +1 food for each citrus/banana/wheat)and god king which give +1 for everything look good as well. Those pantheons speed up science research on beginning but it require mathematical approach to know does it work better on the long run.

Thanks glory7. With your advice, I was able to make a T316. And on a non-desert spot, so no petra (I think it's the major difference in games). And with all warmongers AI.

Nice 4 salt tiles spot, except one on tundra and one on grassland (I tried wet map, not arid). This less two hammers made me a terrible standard start.

Something like 10 to 15 ruins and no culture or faith. At one moment I thought : « when there's no will, there's no way».So I wasted 8 turns in Stonehenge.

I was isolated. AInever settled next to me, so I was force to make an archer corridor for my caravans. Because, they are warmongers, cash was low (250gpt maximum). On the other side, with them you are really alone for wonders. You can delay Oracle and some other wonders safely.

Astro T115, Plastics T205. I lost 5 turns per era relative to you. Oxford for Astro, but was able to have observatory up as soon as I reached it. Rati finisher for Radio.

Tradition > Ratio (to the end) > Freedom (New deal) > Patronage (Scholasticism) > Commerce (Mercantilism) > Finish Freedom > Liberty to the end for a GS.
Fertility rites - Tithe (I'll try Pilgrimage) - Sword into Plowshares - Religious community (maybe not need and feed the word better) - Reliquary (definitely the best with low sea level when you're alone somewhere in the map).
Many wonder, maybe too much, but it's so nice sometimes after a bunch of Deity games.

Letting AI theft your tech is a good idea. RA's at the end of the games can save up to 3turns, and it's surprising to see Catherine in Atomic Era T300 on Prince.

I settled 5 GS - 2 GE and one prophet. I tried to bulb GS to reach key tech, but I really wonder how you can have plastics T180 or so.

For WC, Cathy was hide behind Monty where I thought it was ocean. So I was only able to have it T170. Despite this, science funding, world fair (by AI), cultural heritage site, world ideologies (for fun), international space station (no need in this game, because WCwas too late).

I know mods are illegal, is there a legal way to reroll maps fast? Even with an SSD it takes a while to restart to get a good starting position.

I found something called "Reseed!", but it's a mod and it will allow you to see hidden resources like coal and iron right off the bat so it's no good.

T305. My last try, I think.

Petra start. Divine inspiration instead religious community. I bought 5 GS with faith. (Pilgrimage/Itinerant preacher maybe can decide me for another try :D).
I badly choose where to settle, but I began near Bulawayo, so moved 4 turns, didn't see the silver spot and wanted marble.

I loose Stonehenge for 1 turn against Shaka. A little bit annoying Shaka. I had to manage a war T170. Probably was he paid by Monty to fight me.

Again, an AI was hidden. I find Harald something like T160, so another game without ISS.

Petra start are common with wet rainfall. I can reroll to choose a good petra start. It's really different than other settings.

Seems like +10% is much stronger than sun god for most cases except an extreme oranges and banana start. I'd say if you have 3 or more of those then maybe sun god is better. After say about turn 60 or so you should be getting at least +20 food one way or another. With a OCC it generally stays around there for a while due to specialist use which I heavily invest in.
For regular games I do like sun god, getting 4 or more food on a single tile for a new city is strong. You trade early growth for late game which may or not pan out but its strong IMO.

God king is worthless in this case, as it gives everything *except* food. I like that for perhaps a marathon game, simply because your cap is running solo so long.

do you settle your first GS ? Or save them all for bulbing ? Got my first one at T101. Hit astro that turn using Oxford like Glory7, but don't think I'll be able to keep up with his pace. Salt start, not desert/petra.

cas

T278, at last. Thanks to Divine inspiration (another 15K faith) and Liberty finisher.

I didn't need ISS. Finish the game before complete it. I find Attila late (T145 or so with PP 115).

A perfect map. Desert, river, marble.

Astro T96, Plastics T182, Sattelites T245.
