Godly Starts

That assumes 1) that you have more than 2 DoF and 2) those friends have money when the rounds start.

if you used good sense when you settled, you will have plenty of DoF's in most maps. On deity they will have the money, and on immortal they will usually have the money. I usually am able to get 4ish DoF's on most maps that last till ideologies, and even there I am often able to sign them with civs with different ideologies.

NoOneImportant's start is actually average imo. It has a depressing lack of hammers and no super foods at all. It will grow nicely at first, but not get huge easily so it will struggle near the end to make anything. I would actually consider sending a hammer caravan in, but I really do like grassland quarries.
4 stone/marble, 4 silver, and 3 unique luxes in capital is average? I'm going to have to disagree here. You're right about the end game hammer potential, it's not that great, but early game production is much better than late. Once stoneworks is up production will be very nice for a while. And there is plenty of food with the grassland/river. Not godly, I'd agree, but certainly well above average.

I would've liked it better had the silver been on hills... (here 4 stones/marbles is only good if you have stone circles pantheon.... otherwise they are no different from horses with stable... and horses are even better because of fertilizer late game)

For some reason, even though I beeline for it, I'm never getting the 500 gold from El Dorado.... is anyone else having the same problem? I get there in 3 turns and it doesn't give me the 500 gold, and I'm meeting Valetta first, so I can't imagine anyone is getting it before me....

yeah it's not perfect...just sayin it's above average. 4 of any production resource is a good capital. I'd be stoked on 4 horses too.

Feast your eyes on this

Spoiler :
You won't get df or petra!

My Lord, that is a fantastic start. Which level are you playing on? If it's Immortal or Emperor, I may give it a shot. Where do I save the file to?

Really nice start

Spoiler :
You won't get df or petra!
religion without shrine. (DF from shoshone ruin, religion from DF)
Well, I needed to try. (and retry... )

It's possible. NC before 90. Spain and Austria gave me a lot of money, and china give me a lot of worker.

With Petra, this is easily the most insane start I've ever had. Fortunately no AIs went for it so I built it around T120 and it's been a food / production powerhouse ever since. Only problem was that I didn't get Desert Folklore ..

Looks great but your cap is tiny for the turn. Part of it Must be location of academies. Desert hills wo fresh water would be best as you don't have grass wo fresh water. One more of those I see, and maybe the desert hill sheep. Running fewer non scientists would help too.

If you not going for culture win, I would not put music guild here, that's 6 food and 6 hammer or 8 food you give up for measly 25% boost to GP generation and some right now beakers, which is I assume you are trying to get from all three GWAM in cap with NE.

That city is tiny?? No it isn't. His bpt is good and got great production. More than enough food tiles to run even more specialists but I agree that he shouldn't be working Musicians.

Is pretty small, I usually put each guild a different city so they don't slow growth too much. That city should be size 30 by now.

It kinda is. Should be 30 at least (food trade routes, work river farms). Not nearly enough food surplus either (+40/50 is what a petra city like this can get).

Although I'm not sure if that's what he was going for =)

It is small because it has all those lovely 4 food tiles that are not being worked. If they had been worked constantly, then the city would have grown into the nice 3f/3h tiles. That city has a lot of growth potential that never got realized

Didn't expect so much scrutiny after posting that haha. I don't mind though, I could definitely improve my early game play.

Maybe it was a mistake but I figured I was better off working those desert hill farms with fresh water right away which gave me 3 food / 3 production as opposed to just 4 food. Looking back it's probably a better idea to grow into those tiles like Joshua suggested.

I didn't know where the best place to put the guilds would be but I had so much food / production I figured it would be okay to just put it in my cap where I had already built the national epic. It hinders my growth, true, but it would hinder my growth more in other cities where I don't have as much access to high yield tiles. Are you guys saying I shouldn't build it until later or that I should build it and not work the specialist slots? I figured the increased culture output and extra science from secularism would make it worthwhile to work. Keep in mind that I have an observatory in all but 1 of my 4 cities.

I'm also following Tich's guide (roughly) on the Shoshone so I'm not using things like food trade routes to boost my pop.

surprised i havent seen any Inca starts with monster desert terrace farms with DF and Petra. in GnK they were easily my craziest start spots. and TFs are just cool looking graphics, like Polders. just havent played Inca with BNW yet.

With a cap with that much growth potential, I think its best to put everything in the cap, and aim to work every specialist slot. The added science is nice. That cap needs 51 pop to work all possible specialists and the entire 3 ring, though you should have won an SV (if that's the goal) before you get that big with Babs on a typical 4 city tradition opener.

It's not a big deal, I am guilty of working production before food at times also. As long as you played yourself into a winning position and win in a time that feels good, the game was GOOD :)

I recently rolled this monstrosity, there's another two deer with forest in the third ring.
