Granary any use building if there is no wheat or bananas? Second I have focused on farming, manually, what can I do to speed up food. (Not enough food for citizens to focus on mining.) The avoid growth option seems to do nothing.

The granary gives +2 food and will also increase the food yield on deer tiles. Importantly, it also allows you to send food trade routes from that city to another city.

If your happiness can afford it, there is no downside to more population. So in that regard, always build granaries, aqueducts, and watermills.
I'd hold back on stables, though; the price is not worth if your city has just 1-2 pastures.

Also consider sending food via trade routes. You lose out on gold, but it does wonders for slow/weak cities especially if you have a lousy start. As mentioned, the home city will need a granary at least.
