Great Generals don't Die?

I apologize if this might sound obvious to someone who already knew this... (Did try searching some basic searches to see if discussed)

Something I found out the really interesting way... Sending a unit on an enemy Great General just sends him back to the nearest city. I don't know if it's an AI thing. (I don't usually put my generals in harms way) but I did this twice to an AI that was doing slightly questionable AI moves and Boudica just kept coming back.

This might have more multiplayer implications, but it does mean you could be riskier with an offense knowing your opponent can't make you lose your encampment investment to one bad move.

In my current game, Sumeria and I have been at war for quite some time and he keeps sending his Great Scientist into my territory un-escorted to try and use him next to my natural wonder (I'm pretty sure its Charles Darwin)...and I just keep "killing" him and sending him back to Uruk.
 
This shouldn't be a thing. It isn't that hard to protect great people unless someone is already mopping the floor with your empire.
