War weariness, amenities, general popular approval. It's all a game mechanic. But how should it work?
For me, Happiness as a game mechanic really needs to return
In VI you've, for some reason, got War Weariness and Amenities as separate things, but also the same thing, for some reason. It'd be both simpler and more interesting if it was just 1 mechanic you could keep track of. You lose soldiers (military unit)? Unhapiness! (Why does it matter if it's barbarians or an enemy civ anyway?) You conquer a city, or provide tea, happiness! Suddenly you can balance all these things in an easy and obvious way without keeping track of all these terms and scores. Speaking of, a better way to keep track of "happiness score" on the map would be great.
