How do I install mods in the latest version of Civ 4?

I recently bought a copy of Civ 4, and whenever I install mods the way I did in older versions of the same game, the game would close to the desktop whenever I loaded the mod. I tried putting the mods in C:/Program Files/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Mods, as well as My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/MODS (also accessed by the CustomMods shortcut in the Program Files game directory. I'm a fairly experienced modder with a copy I bought at launch and later updated with the first patch, but I lost the discs and had to buy a new copy.
So, is the file format different now or what? I tried this w/ MaxRigaMod, The Ancient Mediterranean Mod, and my own Italy Mod which worked with older discs. Please help!
