How does the beakers-needed formula work for Teams?

Let's say a friend of mine and I form a 2-player team against a bunch of 3-player teams (AIs). Will they have an easier time of it because they have the same beaker targets as we do, or is the science needed for a given tech scaling with the number of people on the team?
 
It scales, but not directly - it looks like abut 50% more per extra player on the team. I was confused by this so checked it with a hotseat game. If I remember the numbers right, the initial tech costs were 25 for one player, 37 for two, and 49 for three. Also, things like National College, Oxford University, and the Rationalism finisher are per-player, not per-team, so that gives bigger teams even more of a boost.
