Start with Writing
+1 population
Literacy
½ price libraries
No anarchy

The usual problem with zulu is that they can attack really fast, or steal you huts. Then, staying in defence is not good. I suggest building 2 warriors first putting everything on production. You only need 2 turns. If you got 3 forests work 2 turns on 3 forests then 2 forests – 1 grassland. Start exploring and get some gold, it's going to help. If you know they are near you, then you should build a warrior army and put it in a choke point, or defend your capital with 4 warriors then counterrattack forming the army (risky). If they haven't started near you, they could press you, but too late to stop an advantage probrably. You have banked 4 food. You need 8 food to build a settler and back to 2 population, then, work on two trees – 1 grassland for 2 turns and then rush a new city. The 100 gold isn't needed and you can get it later. You can work on gold some turns if you want, putting everything to gold, and where you can't find more than 2 water tiles, work on 1 grassland to bank food. It's pretty simple then, just bank 8 food in your cities at 3 population and rush new cities. Get trees-grassland first, then water tiles. Put warriors in choke points for the first part of the game, while you keep building new cities with 2 trees – 1 grassland trick. Also 1 tree – 1 grassland is ok. If that happens, work on science and choose Bronze Working. After you have got 4-5 cities, that could be ok to get pottery-masonry-irrigation, but if you get it later, it's better. Work on alphabet then code of laws, and switch to republic. Rush some settlers in ancient era then put every city on science to get the last technology, and build the cities after that, to get +1 population. After 8 cities, you can work on irrigation if you can still see the number one in the tech tree, getting this nice bonus. Normally they will take some capitals and build a library or two in ther cities, or just expand. That's not going to hurt you if you have a balanced start. Keep expanding until 15 cities putting units only where needed. Defend boarders, the front, and the coasts with more units. Put some counter-attack units in key cities (or next to key cities). Get navigation and expand to islands, 4-5 is enough but you can build more. Defend them well, they are going to help you in science too much to lose them. Now, tech to industrial era and get construction if you got a nice spot for the production city. You can try the oxford trick (Get industrialization after all it's pre-reqs then build oxford without choosing other technologies). However, you should get the ½ price libraries. Switch to democracy and keep the tech lead if you are ahead, then, remember about the overrun bonus. If you want, you can finish them with tanks/bombers, but remember, never attack with only 1 army unless you know there is only 1 unit/army. You would just keep attacking and not taking the city. Then, build some wings/armies before you attack. Attack key cities and if you could use cruisers, use them to defend your units and to put riflemen/modern infantry) in these new cities as fast as possible, or defend these units. The overrun bonus is the only bonus you can fear in some battles. You can press them with knights but I wouldn't suggest this too much, but, if you see they are expanding too much, exploit it and cut off their expansion with some knights armies or legions armies. Use galleons at least to speed up this work.
You can read their strategy to see more about them, but this should be enough. Not many zulu players play well, and you should still beat good zulu players.

Another civilization that will do the trick is:

Spain:

Navigation
x2 Gold for naming tiles
+50% gold

x2 gold for naming tiles is good to earn more gold (+10) and for the free settler. Navigation can help after the rush. I would suggest building 2 warriors at the start, then if you can see them, build a warrior army and defend. You don't need cities in the mainland at the start.. You would risk flippings or other attacks. Rush a galleon after you get the 100 gold, or work on two trees – 1 grassland to build the settler. You can use at the start the capital as a settler pump. Build cities in the islands, ocean is better for you. In this way you won't need defences really early. An archer could be ok, then build pikemen or riflemen. It's better having 3 archers defending then an archer army. Why? If they beat the archer army, you lost the city. If they flip the city, they get the archer army. If you rushed 1 archer per turn, then one would have 100% fortification, another 50% and the last no fortification bonus. Ok, they should attack the best defence. Then, you can choose the archer with 50% defence and build the army. It would be already fortified, and next turn you would reach 100% fortification, if needed. However, don't rush defences unless you are sure you need. Choose spots with whales or fish at least, or some bonuses like oxen or oak if you can find them. Expand until 10 cities at least, but 7-8 is ok. Get pottery – masonry – irrigation if you know he's going for that as fast as possible, or go for alphabet, writing, code of laws. 12 cities is enough for you. Then, after bronze working, build 2 archers and choose a good spot. Hills are ok, or oak if you can find it, and food to grow. Settle the new city and use that as a production city. Also another city in the mainland would be ok. Use these cities to produce units and defend your capital, then, you should know that Zulu players usually defend badly. Use a galleon fleet and put 2 archers and a catapult army, then press them. Religion could be ok for you. Don't build libraries, you don't need, then that wouldn't be a problem.. However, if you can find a really nice spot, a library or two is ok. In other cities you should build markets, but only after industialization. Keep pressing them. If you lost your armies keep pressing, never let them expanding or teching. That isn't a loss for you, you just keep producing from these cities in the mainland. And, you can use islands as settler pump, too, that's not a problem, but use cities without dye (then in these cities you can get more science). Get all Industializations' pre-reqs like Banking and University, then stop working on science and work on gold. Don't rush markets unless you have banked some hammers, and after you got enough gold, rush Oxford in one of your cities. The production city could be ok, so you won't spend too much. Start building bomber wings, and after you got at least two, attack him. Put some units in the galleons or cruisers and put them in the enemy cities. Then, you should dominate your enemy. Also tanks are ok. Remember about having 2 armies at least. That should be enough, hoping this helps
