I am your slave! :)

Oh, nevermind, I didn't realise that spoiler had the story part. I thought it was just a list of unit names or something, maybe you should make it a little more obvious. I liked the SpaceBalls reference :D

A beachhead must be created on the Spanish mainland consisting of three Barricades.

Thanks, Elephantium.

Hopefully, I've been a bit distracted lately because of RL but it should be sorted out. I've had time to do the SGs but I've completely ignored the XotM games which makes me sad. I need to prioritize better so that my Civving gets done!

I have 1/2 a turn set done on the next post so not long. :D But thanks for the interest! This is NOT dead. It shall be finished as the gods command!

Hannibal Barca! The great god Dumanios does you a favour!

In return though, you must do me a favour!

Name your first Tank Bolo

1. During the future invasion of Spain, one Ironclad must be present, but cannot attack or bombard anything. (Toxicman007)

Full Turn Log
Spoiler :

The year 1912 AD brought new conflict between Carthage and Spain. The Spanish Frigate known as the Three-Fingered Man savaged the galleon ICS Justice of Sparthage GA-01. But the Spanish captain had not accounted for the ICS Charge of Aabraxan FR-02. Once more the floating artillery proved its worth, laying down a steady barrage that damaged the incoming enemy ships. By the time they managed to pull alongside the Justice they were already heavy damaged. A fierce fight erupted as the other Sparthaginian ships tried to maneuver into position. Finally the Three-Fingered Man was dealt a death blow and the ship’s powder exploded. The ship sunk within 90 seconds.

But this was only the first encounter. A new privateer had appeared but the Sparthaginian sailors just chuckled. ICS Charge of Aabraxan FR-02 went into action again and once more devastated the Spanish built ship. ICS Honor of Civinator FR-04 joined the bombardment and by the time the two ships were finished the privateer was a floating blaze. ICS Pillaging Rangers CA-04 finished the attack.

A third Frigate was also spotted on the approach to the LoD. ICS Revenge of Fluttershy FR-12 and ICS Smoky's Fall FR-13 were dispatched to begin bombarding the incoming Frigate though destroying it was not immediately possible.

Hannibal also accepted the counsel of the TIA-CHI and gave the Portuguese the worthless knowledge of Medicine for their World Map, 40 pieces of gold and 6 pieces of gold as tribute.

Maxillian’s Swords and Have Sword, Will Travel were also disbanded.

By 1914AD the Spanish had convinced the foolish Sumerians to sign a trade embargo against Carthage. This was really nothing new for Hannibal. He expected this type of new daily. It was a non-issue mainly because anything that Hannibal might have considered trade was not covered by such an alliance.

The Green Knights, the Ritter, and the Almogavers were disbanded.

Hannibal received the expected visit from the Science Advisor in 1916AD. The timid little man was smiling once more. “Great Hannibal, we have learned the secrets of harvesting the destructive power of explosions. We can now build many interesting things.”

“Such as?” Hannibal asked.

“Such as things that will please Spannibal and the Sparthaginian priests. Transports, destroyers and cruisers.” The Science Advisor grinned. “The fastest of the lot are destroyers. They are twice as fast as and far more powerful than ironclads. They will dominate the waters around Spain.”

Hannibal nodded his approval. “Make it so. And now we may learn the secrets of flight as commanded by the Toxic Priests?”

“Precisely, Lord Hannibal. This should be possible in the next 20 years but at a significant cost.” The Science Advisor admitted. “We will run a deficit of 141 pieces of gold for each budget until we can trim our army. But with the coming invasion of Spain we may be able to accomplish that soon.”

“Excellent. I only have one last question.” Hannibal said, leaning forward. “What the heck is that thing in your eye?!? I never noticed it before. Are you becoming part borg?”

The science advisor sighed. “Lord Hannibal, after our last campaign against Henry we uncovered some of his borg technology. Upon meeting the crew of the Consolationprize, Mr. Spuke explained this technology and helped implant several devices. I have discovered that by using some of the technology I have compensated for some of my Nerd-like tendencies. For example with the enhanced eyepiece I may now peek into the rooms of many Carthaginian women. I also have developed a strange hatred for our Cultural Advisor.”

“We still have a Cultural Advisor?” Hannibal was intrigued.

“Yes, lord. You can find her by pushing the F5 button on your throne. But there is really no reason. The only people that care about culture are those pansy Americans. After being ground into the dust they still have 16% more cultural than we do.”

“Fat lot of good it did deflecting bullets.” Hannibal grumbled. The Science Advisor shrugged.

In 1916AD the following units were disbanded: The Jagged Knights*, The Seekers and the Sword of Toxic Justice.

A great naval battle also occurred off the west coast of the ESC. AS was becoming typical of such clashes, the open salvo was fired by ICS Charge of Aabraxan FR-02. After additional bombardments by the remainder of the fleet, ICS Sacrifice of Sparthage FR-08 delivered the killing blow against the Spanish flotilla of frigates, scattering the warship’s escorts and sending the Spanish prize to the bottom of the ocean.

The final decision for 1916AD had to do with the doomed Americans. They were guaranteed their freedom for 8 more years but a new opportunity had surfaced. Lincoln was willing to give Carthage knowledge of Espionage and their world map in trade for knowledge of the Corporation. Hannibal found this very humorous, for the Americans would never have the opportunity to build and stock exchanges.

Upon the recommendation of the TIA-CHI, the deal was struck.

This seemed to have a positive effect upon the Americans because the trade embargo agreed upon by American and Sumeria against Carthage came to an end in 1918AD.

The naval battle continued as the Spanish Silver Star approached the column lead by ICS Iron Will of Sparthage IR-01. Unfortunately the ironclad was suffering problems on the high seas and the more reliable frigates had to take the lead on the attack. The conclusion of the battle was never in doubt. Once more it was ICS Sacrifice of Sparthage FR-08 that dealt the killing blow.

The battle, however, had only just begun. A second Spanish frigate, sails full of wind was rushing towards the battle. But even more Sparthaginian ships were upon the horizon. The Spanish Lady’s Skipper tried to turn to flee but the superior training of Sparthaginian sailors proved too great to overcome. Sparthaginian cannons began to fire and did not cease until the Lady’s Skipper was a burning wreck. ICS Curse of the Black Hand CA-01 delivered the death blow by affixing a torpedo spar to the prow of the ship and ramming it under the frigate’s keel. The explosion broke the frigate’s back and the warship sunk in a matter of minutes. For their valor the crew of the caravel was recognized as veteran sailors.

The way clear and the transport lines secured by ICS Iron Will of Sparthage IR-01, the landing of Carthaginian forces on the sub-island began. This would clear the way for the final advance on the Spanish mainland. The invasion began with 1,800 heavy cavalry, 2,000 knights and 1,200 cavalry. The island city of Valladolid would be their fist victim.

The landing was not unopposed, however. The Spanish frigate Silver Coast slipped through the picket of frigates and struck at Sparthage’s transports as they lay moored in the shallows to the east of Valladolid. The raid was a complete success much to the chagrin of the priests and sailors of Sparthage. ICS Curse of the Black Hand CA-01 was caught with a broadside and her magazine immediately exploded, sending the ship to the bottom in mere seconds. Damage done, the Silver Coast slipped back into the open sea under the cover of darkness. They had suffered only minor damage mostly from burning shrapnel; they had not expected such a complete victory against the hardened Sparthaginian sailors.

More disturbing was a Spanish armada of frigates covering the progress of a galleon that sailed arrogantly past the LOD pickets.

This had also caught Sparthage off guard, for all of the warships had been sent towards the invasion point in the belief that any naval battle would take place in Spanish waters. Luckily a flood of Sparthaginian frigates were already converging on this area and regardless of what the Galleon carried it would have no chance of establishing a foothold. Carthage’s mastery of railways would make an invasion impossible. And soon Isabella would have too much trouble keeping her island mainland to worry about staging fruitless invasions.

Though Isabella celebrated what she believed was a string of victories the priests of Sparthage knew that it was an illusion. For in the same year, 1920AD, Sparthage placed two new destroyers into the open ocean.

These new Sparthaginian warships would rule the seas completely uncontested and more were being produced. The two ships were christened as ICS Old Man Ironsides DD-01 and ICS Shrub of Civinator III DD-02, resurrecting the names of ships that had well served Carthage. They were immediately sent towards Spain.

ICS Kyoto's Destruction FR-01 too immediate action and bombarded the armada from a distance, causing some damage and confusion in the armada. Destruction’s intent was only to stall the armada long enough for other warships to arrive so that a decisive blow could be dealt.

At the same time the Ghost Knights advanced on Valladolid. The destruction of the city was now ranked as highly important as much to deny the Spanish of the harbor as anything else. The arrival of the Ghost Knights was accompanied by a new discovery. The Spanish city was held by a rather rude band of men known as conquistadors and their mangy mutts. The Carthaginian knights attempted to open a dialogue with these strange men but were greeted only with insults.

Determined to teach the Spaniards some manners, Carthage drew forth a veteran band of lonely cavalrymen known as Somebody to Love. Each of these men had, unfortunately, lost a loved one to the recent rash of epidemics caused by coffee related pollution near Toxic’s Café. Lonely though they may have been they excelled at combat. The rude Spanish Conquistadors were quickly and easily routed into the sea; their black powder pistols and ill-tempered dogs could not withstand the repeating rifles carried by Carthaginian cavalrymen.

A single piece of gold was deposited in the treasury of Carthage but, more importantly, the harbor was set ablaze.

Hannibal ordered that the invasion commence immediately. Until the Toxic Priests at the entrance to the throne room.

“Godly Hannibal,” The Toxic Priests began. “We are concerned with the invasion of Spain.”

“Yes I know wise priests of Toxicman007. Have not I ordered ICS Iron Will of Sparthage IR-01 to protect the invasion force precisely as you commanded?” Hannibal asked with every measure of humbleness he could muster.

“Indeed, but the recent cunning of the Spanish has made us most cautious.” The Toxic Priests said. “We are reluctant to see the forces of Carthage committed to this action only to have them destroyed on the beaches.”

“I too had this fear. For this reason I have ordered the Defenders to be sent with the first wave.” Hannibal said with confidence.

“This is good, pious Hannibal, but it is not enough.” The Toxic Priests said sagely. “No, we must do what was so successful before. You must land slaves upon the Spanish mainland and begin to construct a mighty line of Toxic Fortresses to protect our men and to give them a place to store the sacred ping-pong tables.”

“A line? How many is a line?” Hannibal inquired of the great priests of Toxicman007.

After much consultation and shaking of the prophetic holy device, the priests consulted. The priests pressed in so tight that Hannibal could not see what it was that was being discussed. Finally the priests came to an agreement. Hannibal could have sworn he saw them playing rock-paper-scissors.

“Three, godly Hannibal, shall suffice.”

Hannibal bowed his head low. “As you command, great priests, so shall it be.” Hannibal did not know if this was exactly wise; surely Carthage had the might to simply roll over the arrogant Isabella but he did not doubt the wisdom of the gods. Had they not delivered Carthage to near master of the world? At any rate it did not matter much what Hannibal thought – the people loved their gods and for this reason if no other Hannibal was committed to follow their orders.

With the city destroyed the next step was to remove the Silver Coast. Suddenly lacking a port in which to conceal itself, the Spanish frigate made a run for its homeland. The Sparthginian fleet immediately moved to intercept as much to eliminate a threat as to get revenge for the Curse. ICS Charge of Aabraxan FR-02 opened with its floating artillery, catching the raiding Spanish frigate before it could extend and escape. Their aim was true and the Silver Coast was ablaze within the hour. ICS Smoky's Fall FR-13 administered the killing blow. The once might Spanish frigate was reduced to a field of expanding wreckage.

Carthage’s forces immediately returned to their transports to continue their journey to the Spanish homeland.

The sudden success of the Spanish had the unfortunate effect of encouraging the Americans to agree to a trade embargo against Carthage in 1922 AD. Hannibal chortled at that. Nice work. They had successfully penned an alliance that was going to survive for the next two years, for America’s time was almost ‘up’ and Carthage had plenty of forces in the immediate area to eliminate them entirely.

The Spanish armada attempted to escape the closing net of Sparthaginian warships but that proved impossible. ICS Bravery of Isabella FR-15 and ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01 immediately went to action stations and began bombarding the passing warships. The Spanish armada, focused on delivering its cargo, continued to cover the fleeing galleon. This cost them dearly. The cannons of the Sparthaginian frigates were on target and two of the three escorts suffered severe damage. The tide was already turning against the Spanish and they could not hope to escape the faster ships and better trained sailors of Sparthage. Even worse, ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07 would soon join its sister ships and that would spell the end to the Spanish armada.

In the Sea of Spain the Spanish frigate Cannons of Castile slipped out of port in the attempt to prevent the Carthaginian landings. This, of course, was futile. Three Sparthaginian frigates kept up a withering barrage, all but destroying the Castile. Finally ICS Defense of Smilin' Bob FR-11 put an end to the contest

The year 1924 AD was an important year for Carthage. Hannibal had contemplated the destruction of the Americans but his hand was stayed by the trade advisor.

“Great Hannibal, the Americans are of no concern to us any longer. We can destroy them at will. But now they begun to gather money from the Spaniards and can afford to pay us a large sum of money for knowledge of refining. This is a wonderful deal – we can receive Spanish gold and turn it against Isabella even while we drive a dagger deeper into her back. And as the gold dries up, as we begin to destroy the Spanish homeland, so will this further destroy Isabella’s infrastructure and, ultimately, the American’s as well.”

Hannibal hated the idea of allowing the Americans to live for another 40 years but the offer was too tempting. Lincoln could afford to immediately part with 163 pieces of gold and pay tribute of another 46 pieces of gold. Though it felt like making a pact with the devil himself, Hannibal agreed.

Now all Hannibal had to look forward to was the destruction of the Portuguese, but that would need to wait another 12 years at least.

The biggest event of 1924 AD, however, was the invasion of the Spanish homeland.

A handful of Sparthaginian sailors also began to practice their bombardment skills on Spanish lands, reducing them to rubble. The Sparthaginian sailors laughed even though the land that was placed under fire was a worthless stretch that not even the Spanish were willing to use.

Moving further down the coast the Sparthaginian navy began to bombard the city of Zaragoza to soften the defenses. Bombardment revealed the presence of at least two rifle companies; the XXII and XVIII Rifle Brigade TA.

The lack of information about Spain was very disagreeable to Hannibal but his fears were quickly addressed. For the citizens of Caseboy97’s Asylum had constructed an Intelligence Agency.

This opened new avenues of treachery for Carthage. By the use of espionage Hannibal could actually goad other heads of state into declaring war on Carthage so that Hannibal would not need to violate his own treaties and peace agreements. Hannibal was very happy with this.

He was also pleased by the immediate news that the Spanish armada had reversed course due to the heavy damage it has suffered at the hands of the Sparthaginian frigates. Even better, a new Spanish armada had emerged from the fog and run right into the teeth of the approaching Sparthaginian destroyers!

Naturally neither armada would be allowed to escape. ICS Bravery of Isabella FR-15 and ICS Kyoto's Destruction FR-01 continued to relentlessly hunt down their prey. Likewise, ICS Old Man Ironsides DD-01 and ICS Shrub of Civinator III DD-02 began the immediate bombardment of the new Spanish armada, their heavy cannons smashing the Spanish ships into kindling.

At the same time the Sparthaginian navy continued to bombard Zaragoza and now three Rifle companies were confirmed; the VI Rifle Brigade TA had been identified.

The battle for Zaragoza began with a cavalry blitz. The arrogant men of We Are the Champions opened the attack against the newly forming VI Rifle Brigade TA. The presence of three rifle companies gave Hannibal reason to hold the attack unless reinforcements could be gathered.

Portugal was finally given the secrets of steam power in trade for Henry’s world map and 50 pieces of gold. Hannibal considered this a fair trade as the Portuguese would not be around for much longer.

In 1928AD the Sparthaginian Fleet continued to earn its pay, transporting more units towards Spain and driving off the Spanish armadas that were hunting on the open sea. A new destroyer was put into the sea, ICS Battle of Amsterdam DD-03, along with Sparthage’s first transports, ICS The Crimmerian Hunt TR-01.

Hannibal permitted the Spanish ambassador an audience mostly to amuse himself. Isabella was already willing to give up Palma, Vitoria and 72 pieces of gold for peace. Hannibal chuckled and sent the ambassador on his way.

Something glorious happened in 1930AD. When Hannibal awoke he received a message to hurry to the throne room, for the secretive priests of Dumanios had traveled a long distance from their sacred temples located in the mountains east of New Hannibalopolis. They had, Hannibal was informed, brought a priceless gift to the ruler of the Carthaginians but also a divine demand.

Hannibal made all haste. He had long heard that the priests of Dumanios were a forward thinking sect and that they excelled at feats of engineering. They were adepts at all things mechanical and were often consulted regarding their knowledge by the scientists of Carthage. Though Hannibal had never met them before, he had also heard of their temples, great workshops that smelled of strange chemicals and oil. It was said that all sorts of loud banging and pounding could be heard at all hours of the day and night. The priests themselves were intriguing; the normal priestly robes were well padded with leather to withstand punctures and heat. They looked more like warriors than priests or scientists.

But Hannibal’s eyes did not stay upon the priests for long. His eye flew to the entrance of the palace and, by the grace of the gods – or at least one god in particular – a door had been hung!

Hannibal could not contain a bellow of cheer. The sound frightened the nearby servants but the tinkerer priests of Dumanios mere smiled with wisdom and a measure of delight, for their work was that of the divine and to appreciate their work was to worship their god.

“Great priests of Dumanios, you have done me an honor for which that I have spent the last 5930 years wishing. I must admit I had even given up hope!” Hannibal smiled broadly at the high priest of Dumanios, a man known as Father Laumer.

“The great god has many gifts and favors that can be bestowed upon those that are worthy, pious Hannibal. “ Father Laumer said, though not with his own voice. He had fitted a strange device across his throat that spoke for him in a whirl of electronic vibrations. His mouths never moved. Hannibal was much intrigued by the man.

“But we come not only with gifts, good Hannibal.” The priests continued pleasantly. “The great god Dumanios has heard that it will not be long before Carthage begins to produce great machines of war. We have seen some of the work that is being done on these ‘tanks’ and we believe there is much that can be improved.”

“Wise and great priests of Dumanios,” Hannibal said with all humility, “If you say this is so, how can I deny it? Have you not hung a door were once there was none? Have you not accomplished this and many other feats just as great? If you say that there can be improvements, I believe it must be true as much as I believe the sun must rise.”

“Humble Hannibal, your words are those of a wise ruler.” The machine buzzed at the base of the priest’s throat. “We shall join with the scientists to produce these ‘tanks’ and make them in the image of Dumanios. But once this is done they will not longer be known as ‘tanks’ but as Bolos and they shall be organized under the Dinochrome Brigade. The first shall even bare the name of “Bolo” in honor of this. All others that follow may be given other names, but they shall be part of the Dinochrome Brigade.”

Hannibal liked the sound of this new name and found it intriguing. With Bolos in the service of Carthage, what could stop them? Clearly the answer was: nothing. Hannibal ordered that it be so and that Carthage would make all haste to build these powerful Bolos.

In 1930AD the Sparthaginian navy had bombarded the Spanish armada into kindling. Every ship in the fleet was a burning wreck. With high confidence ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01 sailed into their midst to send one of the escorts into the depths. The reports Hannibal received were confused. It was possible that the captain was slain in a lucky broadside. It was also possible that the powerful frigate’s steering was also disabled and thus unable to escape. What is certain is that the Destruction caught fire while hunting amongst the wreckage and her powder magazine exploded. There were no survivors.

Stunned, Hannibal ordered a day of mourning for all the people of Carthage and people flocked to the temples of Sparthage to pray for the souls of the lost sailors.

The armies of Carthage were now growing upon the Spanish mainland and construction of the first Toxic Fortress was underway, though it would take years to finish. Additional units were being rushed to the landing zone, including more workers. The secrets of flight were but 6 years from fruition, at which time the first airports would be constructed and the usefulness of the Portuguese will have run its course. Hannibal had but 120 years of life left to him to see that the will of the gods was carried out. He vowed that he would not fail the gods.

Just wanted to say that an update is coming soon. I am really focused on finishing this. It is almost done! As a preview - Portugal is gone. Hannibal did run into a compliation, though. Hannibal thought that if he had an airport on the ESC that Carthage could import luxuries through the airfields created by workers. But even with airports in Carthaginian cities, this does not appear to be the case.

I never had to worry about not have a port on another continient before. So Hannibal hit a bit of a slowdown. He considered leaving Henry alive again but it was just too tempting to finish him off. But without all the resources, war weariness might cause a problem in Carthage while Spain is being eliminated. Huge problem? Nah. Just disappointing. Might slow down research to nuclear warheads a few turns though. Also, no more laying rails on the ESC. Grrrr.

Anyway, hope to have a post up this weekend!

Spoiler :

The year 1932AD opened with renewed hostilities between Carthage and Spain. ICS Bravery of Isabella FR-15 had continued to track the wreckage of the Spanish armada even after the loss of ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01. Unwilling to allow the armada to escape, the Bravery opened fire upon the retreating ships. Once more the Spanish armada displayed its bravery and cunning. The Captain of the Queen’s Justice turned into the attack and, under the cover of the bombardment of its sister ships, rammed into the Bravery. Though the Queen’s Justice was now doomed and quickly sank it had caused massive damage to the Bravery, damage that could not be fixed in any place other than a port. Like several other Sparthaginian warships, the Bravery had been reduced to little more than floating artillery platform. ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07 quickly moved to cover the damaged Bravery.

In the opening battle on the Spanish mainland Toxic’s 6th Cavalry struck at Zaragoza and the VI Rifle Brigade TA was destroyed after a hard fought battle. The Spanish had grown complacent believing the Carthaginians would not wander from the protection of the Defenders and the powerful Toxic Fortress that was being constructed. The strike was swift and then the Carthaginian cavalry faded back to the landing zone. Other lands were also pillaged and the Sparthaginian navy laid down a continuous bombardment, destroying the coastal lands.

Isabella continued to waffle on the invasion and what should be done about the Carthaginian units and the Sparthaginian navy. Both armadas were now under recall and making best speed back to Spain. They would not reach Spain, however, if Hannibal had anything to say about the matter.

And while the Spanish were aimlessly wandering around their homeland trying to decide what to do about their impending destruction, the Carthaginian Science Advisor entered the throne room after politely knocking on the front door. Hannibal, ever magnanimous, granted him an audience.

“What good news do you have for me today?” Hannibal asked, feeling very happy with his new door.

“Great Hannibal, we have done it again. Our aggressive research policies have finally unraveled the secrets of flight!”

Hannibal smiled broadly. “This is grand news! We must remember the promise to the Toxic Priests and their wise, all seeing god. We must immediately invest all our efforts into building a port for the use of airplane. “

“It shall be so, Great Hannibal,” The Domestic Advisor said, joining the conversation. The Military Advisor was also close at hand. “The guerillas that were being trained have been put to work building the Toxic Airport.”

“So we have a team of monkeys working on it?” Hannibal asked, arching an eyebrow. “I hope they are working around the clock.”

“Indeed Great Hannibal. But the airport at Smilin’ Bob will be complete in only four years.” The Domestic Advisor reported. “Oddly, it will take one band of slaves roughly thirty seconds to construct the same structures. Unfortunately the tarmac requires their ground blood and bones to serve as the mortar.”

Hannibal found that slightly disturbing. But progress often required the massacre of the enslaved population of the vanquished. He ordered the immediate construction of a temporary airport upon the Carthaginian mainland and a second upon the ESC.

First the Casey-Bob Airport was established by bulldozing some of the oldest neighborhoods that had ‘sprawled’ between Smilin’ Bob and Caseyboy97’s Asylum over the past 5000 years.

Next an Airport was established on the ESC near the Line of Death. Accordingly it was called the Port of Death.

Oddly, though the only airport on the ESC, it did not receive wide patronage.

“With our airports constructed we are now able transport our own luxuries to Carthaginian cities, Lord Hannibal.” The TIA-CHI added.

“Which means we no longer require the services of the Portuguese and their sniveling borg leader, Henry.” The Military Advisor added. “Our forces are already in place and itching to destroy them. The followers of Sparthage and Elephantium are eager to continue the Holy War. They believe that the annoying Portuguese cities will serve as good outlets for their wrath.”

“Will this conclude the Holy War?” Hannibal asked. The Carthaginian people had followed the struggle with great interest.

“No, Great Hannibal.” The Military Advisor reported. “According to the rules of the Holy War, it will only end when the ESC is cleansed of our enemies or they are reduced to single city clients. The Spanish have two cities on the ESC and they are being guarded by the Sumerians and Byzantines.”

“Do we have a solution for this?” Hannibal asked.

“Perhaps. But first we need to destroy their mainland and eradicate the Portuguese.” The Military Advisor said. “Then we can begin the relocation of the remaining civilizations and the final destruction of the Americans.”

Hannibal smiled. “Then we must make it so.”

The Portuguese Ambassador was quickly summoned to an audience with Hannibal. He marveled at the new door that had been hung on the palace. He had believed such technology to be hundreds of years beyond the scientific achievements of the Carthaginians.

“Great Hannibal, what do you seek from the glory of the Portuguese Empire?” The Ambassador said, feeling never as he faced Hannibal’s entire cabinet (minus the Trade and Cultural Advisors, of course).

“We would like to enter into a new trade agreement with your leader Henry.” Hannibal said sweetly.

“And what do you wish to trade, oh mighty Hannibal?”

“Tell me, do you know the secrets of flight?”

The man’s eyes grew large but he covered quickly. “Of course, great Hannibal, for we know many things of which the Carthaginians are unaware. For example, we’ve been hanging doors on our dwellings for thousands of years.”

“I see. Then you would have no interest in obtaining this knowledge?” Hannibal said, feigning sadness. “I thought you would jump at the chance to bring such knowledge back to Henry personally.”

“Well perhaps you can show me what you know and I can offer advice on how to improve your techniques?” The ambassador offered with an air of selflessness.

“That is an excellent idea. I shall see to it that you are given a personal lesson in flight.”

“That is very . . .kind of you.” But the man squeaked as two guards seized him roughly by the arms.

Hannibal watched as the Ambassador was removed from the throne room and immediately taken to the University of the CELTICEMPIRE and escorted off the roof. As it turned out he did jump at the chance but the Portuguese did not know the secrets of flight after all.

Once the fun was over Hannibal returned to the throne room. “And what of our next technology?”

“To fulfill our promise to the priest of Dumanios we must pursue the knowledge of mass production. This will allow us to produce widgets at a greatly increased rate.” The Science Advisor announcd.

“What are widgets used for?” Hannibal asked, intrigued.

“Analogies, mostly.” The Science Advisor said happily. “They are also the focus of most college level business classes. They come in an amazing variety, in fact and so far no one has determined their marginal utility with 100% confidence. It is one of the great mysteries of the Twenty Century.”

Hannibal ordered it so and awaited the battle reports from the ESC. Unfortunately he was also told that the Carthaginian plan to use the airports to bring luxuries back to the mainland had failed. This greatly annoyed Hannibal but in the end he decided that Portugal had to be destroyed regardless. It was just a matter of timing.

I thought if I had an airport on each continent that it would serve as a link between the two for luxuries. That’s a little frustrating.

It had been a while since the last battle of the Holy War. After dusting off the old reports, Hannibal saw that the first attack belonged to the followers of Elephantium, for the Paladins of the Peanut had fought the last battle at Santander in 1906AD after Rarity’s Cavalry had been routed. Thus the honor of the first – and hardest – attack was for Elephantium.

As they had fought the last battle thirty years ago the Paladins of the Peanut were called forward once more to destroy the enemies of Carthage and to prove the strength of their holy might and the blessing of Elephantium.

The first target of the blitz was the city of Nazare. The city was protected by the 31st Infantry Regiment of Spears, a formation of army regulars, for Henry had precious few veterans left in his ragged army.

The Portuguese had attempted to establish a city here many time before and it had never managed to survive. This time was no different. The open approaches to the city gave the spearmen little cover other than their inadequate trenches. The Paladins of the Peanut riddled them with bullets suffering such minor wounds that they were not worthy of a report.

The city was razed and the citizens put to the sword without the slightest mercy. Victory Points: 8.1 [2(D)x3(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 296 Elephantium: 328.4

The next attack in the Blitz was assigned to Celestia’s Cavalry even though the alicorn princess still wept for the loss of her sister. Though slow to anger, she was terrifyingly beautiful in her grief driven rage. The city garrison trembled as the Sparthaginian Cavalry approached the city and her horn began to glow. When a corresponding glow seized the city gates Celestia simply tossed her head and the gates trembled as if a might ram had struck them. Each toss brought greater torture until the once sturdy wood splinters. The sound was akin to a lightning strike and it shattered the last shreds of the garrison’s resolve. The defense melted away, leaving the city undefended and vulnerable to the approaching cavalry loyal to Sparthage.

Though a mighty victory this did not meet the criteria of the Holy War so it was yet Sparthage’s glory to make the attack. The next city that lay before Carthage’s savagery was Tavira. Because of its placement it would serve as the gateway to Cacela which was, at present, protected by the mountains.

Twilight Sparkle, the MPL with the longest term of service to Carthage at present, was to lead this attack. The forward scouts revealed something very interesting to the unicorn. The city was constructed on a hilltop and it was garrisoned with 400 veteran musketmen. Worse, if the battle was to take place in 1936AD then it would be necessary to wade across a river to reach the battle. Given the strength of the defenders it was decided that extra strength was need in the attack. The call was sent for Rarities’ Cavalry.

The elegant unicorn immediately answered with her elite command. The cry of Darling rang through the valley as the attack commenced. Only Rarities elite band could have forced the river crossing under such intense fire. The musketmen of the 13th Infantry Regiment of Musket poured a murders barrage into the oncoming cavalry, killing horse and rider with seeming impunity.

But once their commander’s hooves touched the opposite bank the real fighting began. Though the battle raged all day and night it was with grace and confidence that Rarity led her men to victory. The cost, however, was horrible. Half of her command lay dead and most of the survivors were wounded, including Rarity. The brave unicorn had suffered three bullet wounds; two little more than scratches but the third was a chest wound. Luckily it had done only muscle damage and she would recover after a convalescent leave.

More importantly, the city of Tavira was destroyed and a band of Portuguese settlers captured. These became the Portuguese51-52 slaves. Victory Points: 36 [4(D)x4(HP)x2.25(T)]; Sparthage: 332 Elephantium: 328.4

The blitz continued. Depry Hooves’ Cavalry was called upon to assault the cit of Bissasu. Another city fortified on a hill, the Sparthaginian scouts were surprised to find that the Portuguese 2nd Lancers Regiment of Knight held the city. A veteran band of knights, this was likely to prove to be a difficult battle. Orders were sent forward to use great caution on the approach to the city but either the message was garbled or more likely Depry mixed them up and a charge was ordered.

Which it was, the assault was brilliantly timed. The 2nd Lancers had assumed that Carthage would wait to bring up reserves and they were caught off guard and in the open. A fierce battle commenced and the Portuguese command made a grave error by not retreating immediately. Seeming their cross-eyed commander, the 2nd Lancers decided that this band of Carthaginians could easily be dealt with. But the dealing was to be done by the MLP cavalry. The 2nd Lancers dealt a handful of solid blows against the followers of Sparthage but the victories were minor. The battle quickly swung back to the MLP command. With near reckless abandon the Sparthaginian cavalry first smashed the ranks of the 2nd Lancers and then smashed their confidence.

The 2nd Lancers tried to reach the safely of Bissasu but the battle was over. Knight upon knight fell to the repeating rifles of the Carthaginian cavalry. Victory Points: 21 [3(D)x4(HP)x1.75(T)]; Sparthage: 353 Elephantium: 328.4

A new band of slaves, Portuguese53 were gathered from the ravaged population of the city.

The road was now open to Caceia and the elite Peanutguard drew forth to do battle. Though the city of 45,000 people rested within the hills and mountains the city itself was build upon the lush but flat grasslands. Drawing near to the city the forward scouts reported that finally some descent Portuguese defenders could be found. The 4th Infantry Regiment of Rifles were seen frantically digging trenches around the city.

The priests of Elephantium quickly decided that the elite cavalry of the Peanutguard were more than a match for the regular Portuguese rifles and an attack was organized. Once more the followers of Elephantium proved their professionalism and the 4th Rifles were routed without so much as a scratch to a single follower of the Tusked God.

The defeat was so humiliating to the Portuguese that the People immediately recognized the leader of the Peanutguard, as one of the Great Leaders of Carthage.

Hannibal was very happy with this turn of events. Mr. Peanut would return to Carthage. Hannibal had a very special plan for this Great Leader of Carthage. Victory Points: 24.3 [6(D)x3(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 353 Elephantium: 352.7

This great victory left only the 17th Infantry Regiment of Spears to hold the city. Tusker’s Raiders, witnessing the complete victory of the Peanutguard, attacked immediately. Though their attack was not as spectacular as that lead by Mr. Peanut, only minor wounds were reported after the spearmen were trampled into the mud. The city was given to the flames and Portuguese access to iron was once more denied. The Portuguese54 slaves were formed from the luckless citizens. Victory Points: 8.1 [2(D)x3(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 353 Elephantium: 360.8

The Portuguese55 slaves were also picked up out of the field by the Radiant Knights.

The final attack against Portugal was to be the sack of Alcobaca. For this attack the sturdy Applejack was called upon. A great leader of Carthage in her own right, Applejack led her new veteran band against the defenses of the city. It was no surprise that the garrison of Alcobaca, the 5th Infantry Regiment of Muskets, threw down their weapons and fled the city at her approach. A handful of braver souls attempted to harass the renowned MLP but it was futile. The determined workhorse would not be denied.

Her marvelous victory earned her men recognition of an elite band as befit their leadership and training. A ceremony was held as Alcobaca burned. As a bonus, the Portuguese Man’o’Borg was also caught in harbor and was added to the blaze of the city. Victory Points: 21.6 [4(D)x4(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 374.6 Elephantium: 360.8

Finally Old Man Iron led his army against Lisbon, position himself so that he could finish the war against Portugal in 1938AD. Lisbon was a shadow of its former glory with only 50,000 citizens and a regular band of riflemen – the 7th Infantry – holding the city.

The war against Spain was also developing. The first of the Toxic Forts had been constructed. This was known as Fort VX.

Construction of the next for was soon to begin while Fort VX was converted into a barricade fortress. Meanwhile, the sheer might of the Carthaginian army upon the Spanish mainland made their victory inevitable even at a high cost in lives. The landing commanders quickly decided that Zaragoza had to be removed. It was hoped that the loss of the city would push the Spanish back and give the Carthaginian invaders room to rest, forage for food and heal their wounds.

It was decided with ruthless calculation that the remaining Carthaginian heavy cavalry would be thrown into the battle to weaken the defenses of the city. The Hessian company was called to the front to attempt the assault against the XVIII Rifle Brigade TA. To the great amazement of the Carthaginian commanders the elite Hessians drove their 600 men into the blistering fire of the Rifle Brigade. Weathering the storm, the Hessians craved their way through the ranks of the Spanish rifles, killing all 400 defending riflemen and leaving a large game in their ranks.

The assault continued with the Knights of the Order of the Oak, another elite band of heavy cavalry was thrown into the meat grinder around Zaragoza. This was almost a complete disaster with 500 heavy cavalry falling pray to the XXII Rifle Brigade TA. The knights had, however, inflicted minor wounds upon the riflemen, reducing their effective strength by almost 25%.

This was followed by the Knights of the White Mountain. Once more the elite heavy cavalry of Carthage prevailed. Without regard to losses the knights drove against the wall of Spanish rifles. Hundreds of men and horses made a road of their bodies to lead the others into the ranks of rifles where their lances and swords could be brought to bare. The carnage was sickening and hundreds of men were locked in personal struggles for life and death. In the end 200 Carthaginians remained in the trenches, bathed in blood and victory.

The Eastern Territorial Commander was not will to concede defeat however and quickly knit together the XL Rifle Brigade TA was formed from the retreating elements of the XXII and XVIII Rifle Brigades and forced back to the line. All that could be gathered (or caught) were 200 men. The Ghost Knights, an elite band of Knights were called next as all the heavy cavalry had already been expended. The newly formed XL Rifles made a brave show but they could not withstand the devastating attack of the Ghost Knights and the final defense of the city collapsed.

The Ghost Knights put the city to the torch and placed the population in chains, creating the Spanish05-09 slave. This, unfortunately, left the Ghost Knights vulnerable to counterattack but this was seen as an acceptable danger. It might even leave on of the Spanish Cavalry vulnerable to a counter counterattack.

The Defenders were moved to cover the wounded Carthaginian units leaving the Puppies to hold Fort VX.

On the high seas ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07 fell upon the retreating Spanish Armada that had been devastated by repeated artillery barrages, sinking yet another of the galleon’s escort frigate.

Part 2 of 2
Spoiler :

After all of the good news of 1936AD it was expected that some bad news would greet Carthage in 1938AD. Spain and Sumeria signed a trade embargo against Carthage insuring that Hannibal would not have a source of a silk pajamas or ice for his margaritas at least for a while longer.

The puppies were indeed assaulted at Fort VX but they easily brushed off the cavalry attack of the IX Independent brigade TA. However the Ghost Knights did not fare as well, falling to the cavalry of the XII Independent brigade TA.

By 1938AD, however, Fort VX had become a Toxic Barricade. The Destroyer ICS Old Man Ironsides DD-01 had finally reached the Spanish mainland and moved to reinforce the landing area. Catching the wounded Spanish Armada still at sea the green destroyer opened fire on the last remaining escort frigate. Its 5-inch main cannon was far more than the wooden hull of the frigate could withstand and a handful of shells took the ship to the bottom. The precision of the few projectiles was a frightening omen to the Spanish fleet and the crew of the Old Man were quickly recognized as elite.

This finally left the escorted galleon vulnerable to attack by ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07. The wounded Galleon fought with amazing courage and inflicted horrible damage upon the Fall but in the end it too went to the bottom with all hands aboard. Even so the crew of the Fall were also recognized for their bravery and tenacity.

This did, however, mean that the Fall would not be relegated mostly to artillery action rather than frontal assaults. But with the appearance of the Sparthaginian destroyers it was unlikely that the Spanish would ever be able to mount a naval challenge again. In addition, ICS Onyx Death DD-04 and ICS Battle of Amsterdam DD-03 were now stalking the second ragged Spanish armada and would soon see them all drown as well.

The unfortunate IX Independent brigade TA (cavalry) could not escape after their blooding at the hands of the Puppies and the lonely men of Someone to Love easily eliminated them before returning to the protection of the Defenders. Spanish fortunes continued to fall as Isabella’s Heel (The 4th Trebuchet Battery) and You’re Hired (5th Cannon Battery) were installed at Fort VX to assist the Puppies in their defense. The approach to the barricade fortress was further hampered by the positioning of the Defenders army so that approaching units would be exposed to attack by the army pickets, thus suffering damage as they tried to engage the fort.

On the mainland the Portuguese had completely failed to form any type of counterattack. The 10th Infantry Regiment of Muskets were seen trying to maneuver to Obidos but instead just managed to be complete out of position to assist with any defense.

By the rules of the Holy War it was still Sparthage’s honor to attack. Celestia’s Cavalry were quickly recalled and redeployed to the warfront against Obidos. Upon arriving the Sparthaginian Cavalry discovered the 3,000 spears of the 27th Infantry Regiment of Spears. Still mad with rage the princess drove her men before her into the ranks of spears. Her madness frightened her own men but terrified the Spanish defenders. Most of them threw down their spears and fled only to be shot as they ran. Celestia’s men suffered only minor wounds otherwise. The Portuguese56 slave band was formed from the survivors of the ravaged city. Victory Points: 8.1 [2(D)x3(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 382.7 Elephantium: 360.8

The final battle was now staged against Henry. Only Lisbon remained. The Portuguese57 slaves were caught outside the city and pressed into service before the final assault was ordered.

Tusker’s Chargers were called upon by the Priests of Elephantium to put an end to Henry’s borg madness. The regular Rifles of the 9th Infantry Regiment had dug hasty trench works around Lisbon but the flat open plains surrounding the city did nothing to help them. Even the river was at their back eliminating any chance of retreat. Henry was trapped.

The 9th Rifles put up a fierce fight, their rifles causing serious damage to the professional and competent strategist of the Chargers. The 9th gave as good as they got but they numbered only 300 men against the attackers 500 cavalry. It was numbers that decided the battle and the 9th melted away. Victory Points: 24.3 [6(D)x3(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 382.7 Elephantium: 385.1

This left the 12th Infantry Regiment of Pikemen to hold Henry’s city. The Paladins of Elephantium were tasked with the final assault. With typical precision the Paladins stormed the final defenses, proving themselves to be elite.

This was the final stand of Henry. Hannibal received word that the ‘Strong’ Portuguese had been destroyed.

Hannibal chuckled at the death of the borg Henry:borg:. Resistance is futile? Not! :assimilate:

In 1940 AD good news arrived from Spain. ICS Shrub of Civinator III DD-02 had successful executed a shore bombardment that devastated Isabella’s saltpeter mines, collapsing the entire mountainside on the terrified citizens of Santiago.

The destruction of the mining complex had now denied the Spainish war effort of the much needed saltpeter. Without it, no further cavalry units or, for that matter frigates, could be produced though the Spanish rifle brigades could still be formed and, likewise, their annoying conquistadors.

The Sparthaginian fleet now rules the seas and bombardment of the Spanish coast began in earnest, with the shore of Toledo suffering massive bombardment.

ICS Onyx Death DD-04 sunk one of the damaged Spanish frigates of the retreating armada but in turn suffered damage from a freak cannonball that careened through the armor of the bridge, killing the captain and most of the command of the ship.

ICS Battle of Amsterdam DD-03 rushed to its aid and bombarded the remaining Spanish frigate, reducing it to a blazing wreck. It wouldn’t be long before the remainder of the armada was resting on the bottom of the ocean.

After the bombardments it was revealed that the best defender available in Toledo was a mere Brigade of pikemen – the XIII Pikemen Brigade TA. With Construction of Carthage’s second Toxic Fortress, Fort Strchnine, it was now possible to range farther into Spanish lands. A new compliment of Carthaginian Infantry – the Glow Worms and the Fat Bottomed Girls – secured Fort FX. The Fat Bottomed Girls was a strange name for an infantry unit or so Hannibal though until he inspected them. As it turned out the entire unit was formed of said fat bottomed girls, 400 in all, all of them dedicated disciplines of the god POP. The formation of the unit was authorized by no less than Hannibal’s mother. While getting them into uniform was somewhat difficult, Hannibal quickly discovered that these Fat Bottomed Girls made the rocking world go around. And really, how could he have resisted the combined strength of his mom and POP.

Toledo’s XIII Pikeman Brigade TA was first assaulted by the Cavalry known as Somebody to Love. This deadly unit had performed excellently for Carthage in the past. This time, however, they had to cover 200 miles of hostile farmland and then force a crossing at the River of Toledo to make the assault. That was a tall order for any military unit.

Somebody to Love managed the assault in high form. The success of the attack was initially cast into doubt when several dozen men and horses drown in the river when a passage proved less stable then believed. Then several dozen more died to create a salient on the opposite side of the river. But then the superior weapons began to make their presence known and the XIII Pikemen were wiped aside.

This created a new military opportunity. The destruction of the covering pikemen left the XLI Independent (cavalry) Brigade vulnerable to attack as they garrisoned in the city to heal their wounds and refresh their mounts. This important assault was given to another odd band, the Warm Fuzzies. And even though Somebody to Love had already forced the crossing they were unable to provide more than token assistance to the assault of the Warm Fuzzies.

The assault was costly. The Warm Fuzzies came under immediately attack by enfilading fire by the XLI and XXXIV Independent (cavalry) Brigades, suffering horrible loses in the exchange. But the movement and initiative of the Warm Fuzzies gave them the edge and though they were reduced to less than 25% of their fighting strength, the XLI Brigade was finally overrun.

We Will Rock You was now pulled forward. Originally this group had been assembled for catapult duty and had though up what Hannibal considered a rather witty name. But the unreliable and now woefully out of date catapults had been put aside and this group had been assigned to cavalry duty. As it turned out it might have been wiser to leave them as an artillery unit. The XXXIV were not well aware of the assault and they unleashed a devastating barrage against We Will Rock You, killing more than 50% of their force before they could cross the river. The Warm Fuzzies and Somebody to Love were forced to watch as the Carthaginian Cavalry unit unraveled and finally melted away under the blistering fire, the unit completely destroyed.

The assault, however, continued. Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry was dispatched to the city only to find that the XXXIV Independent (cavalry) Brigade had moved for cover under the XV Pikemen Brigade TA. The 2nd Toxic had long established themselves as professional cavalrymen and easily made the crossing and slaughtered the XV Pikemen at a distance. Only a handful of minor wounds were reported, most from when the cavalry men finally had to enter close combat to seize the trench works.

Isabella’s army would not give up, however. Already the VII Spearman Brigade TA were advancing to block passage to the city. Toxic’s 6th Cavalry advanced against the weak defenses of the spearmen. They had, however, been lulled into a fall sense of security and the advancing cavalry were beset by spearmen that left from the ranks of their own dead bodies. The 6th Toxic were initially caught by surprise and spear tips found horse and man with ease. The cavalry captains, well trained at CommandoBob’s Academy for the Militarily Gifted, rallied their men and the tables quickly turned. The cavalrymen fought their way out of the trap before turning back to finish the job – and destroy the XV Spearmen, thus providing themselves to be an elite company.

The finally attack was by the elite Toxic’s 3rd Cavalry. Once more the XXXIV Independent (cavalry) Brigade was exposed, the last defenders of the city even though less than 200 men remained in their ranks. The XXXIV were now hardened veterans and they laid down a deadly accurate fire as the 3rd made the crossing. Though ultimately successful, the elite band had been gutted. It was now likely that the exposed 3rd Toxic would be destroyed in a counter attack. But the Spanish had also lost one of their largest cities and 5 new slaves were captured – Spanish10-14.

Though a high sacrifice it was certainly worth the destruction of a city of over 200,000 citizens loyal to Isabella. That accounted for the death or enslavement of nearly one in every eight of her loyal servants. Carthage could afford to lose a few hundred cavalrymen. Caseboy97’s Asylum trained nearly 400 cavalrymen or infantry every two years.

The defenders were quickly advanced to protect the main stack of wounded cavalrymen and to escort the workers to the location of Carthage’s final fortress location.

It was only with great amazement that Hannibal was notified of the survival of Toxic’s 3rd Cavalry. The elite band, reduced to 20% of its normal strength, which in military nomenclature was was ‘redlined’, realizing it could not escape, had camouflaged their camps. Although Isabella sent out several companies of her stinking Conquestadors and even some musketmen and medieval infantry, none of them managed to locate the Toxic’s 3rd.

This made Hannibal greatly happy, reducing the permanent Carthaginian losses to only We Will Rock You.

ICS Onyx Death DD-04 and ICS Battle of Amsterdam DD-03 continued their attack on the Spanish armada, eliminating the final two frigates and leaving the Spanish galleon unprotected. The galleon managed to evade the Sparthaginian destroyers, slipping out to sea as its escorts were shattered, their backs broken by the heavy weaponry of Sparthage’s navy. The hunt would, however, continue.

Hannibal ordered the reorganization of Carthage’s forces on the Spanish mainland, including preparations to place an airfield now that additional infantry were available for protection. In the meantime the Defenders would guard the slaves tasked with clearing the fields for the landing zone.

In 1944AD the trade embargo enforced by the Byzantines and Spain against Carthage ended. Unfortunately war weariness was already beginning to affect Carthage and Hannibal had to authorize the spread of some coins to keep the people happy. It was not, however, something that could be sustained for long. The Carthaginian treasury had already dipped below 4000 pieces of gold and it would rapidly dwindle now.

ICS Onyx Death DD-04 took the opportunity to finally sink the last of the Spanish armada but Isabella’s subjects would not die quietly. As the Sparthaginian destroyers closed in the galleon slipped some of the cavalry men over the side into a handful of boats. These boats waited in the early morning fog and waited. As the Death cut through the water and sighted the galleon its massive main cannon began to fire a relentless barrage at the fleeing galleon. The cavalrymen, their target sighted, rowed up to the destroy laden with kegs of gunpowder. Turning them into makeshift torpedoes, the cavalrymen sent the boats into the side of the destroyer, jumping into the water at the last moment. A handful even managed to board the ship during the confusion and cause additional damage. In the end all of the Spaniards were slain or captured. The galleon had long since slipped below the ocean waves. The Spanish armada was no more.

By 1946AD The Tia-Chi suggested a few new trades. First was the trade of Industrialization to Persia for their world map and 27 pieces of gold. Persia would never have the opportunity to utilize this knowledge while on the other hand Carthage was now strapped for cash. Theodora’s Byzantines were granted Combustion for knowledge of Fascism, their world map, all 24 pieces of gold in their treasury and tribute of 6 pieces of gold. Finally America was given knowledge of Combustion for Lincoln’s world map and 91 pieces of gold. This temporarily rebuilt the Carthaginian treasury.

The most important event, however, was the construction of the final Toxic Fortress – Fort Digoxin.

All three toxic barricade fortresses were now complete and Carthage had built up an incredible landing force protected by artillery (catapults, trebuchets and cannons) and infantry. A mixture of heavy cavalry, knights and modern cavalry were garrisoned and moving into position. Sparthage ruled the sea without challenge, its destroyers dominating anything that the Spanish could field. Isabella’s source of saltpeter was destroyed, at least for now.

As a result the Defenders were now free to lead an attack against the next Spanish city – Barcelona. Nearly 3,000 modern cavalry accompanied the advance. The forward scouts of the army indentified the XXII Rifle Brigade TA holding the approaches to the city. Unfortunately for the Spanish, the city was build upon the open plains amongst the rich resources of silks. This was perfect cavalry territory. Worse for Spain, Carthage was mass training cavalry and airports now allowed swift transport of these new units.

The Sparthaginian navy also began the bombardment of the new Spanish city build upon the old site of Toledo, devastating a nearby band of conquistadors and wounding the XIIIV Musket Brigade holding Cordoba. A band of Cavalry, the LI Independent (cavalry) Brigade, was seen by Sparthaginian sailors operating in the area around Cordoba.

1948AD opened with the naval bombardment of Cordoba, reducing the XIIIV Musket Brigade to a shaken, terrified command of mostly wounded men. Most of the men were shell shocked by the fierce fire and, with no cannons of their own to answer, the men could only dig deeper into the city’s pitiful fortifications and die.

Time had also run out for the people of Barcelona. The XXII Rifle Brigade TA was a formidable enemy and Hannibal knew that many a brave man might die taking the city. But the destruction of the city would seal the fate of Spain. With the city destroyed it would leave the field wide open to Salamanca, Santiago and even Madrid, Isabella’s capital city.

The elite Toxic’s 10th Cavalry was selected to open the attack in the hope of breaking the XXII Rifles. This was not to be, however. The IX Longbow Brigade TA began firing as the cavalry approached and the combined barrage of arrows and endless rifle fire drove back Toxic’s 10th without s much as a scratch to the defenders.

The cavalry men of Under Pressure were next. Also elites, these men were known for their ability to hand great amounts of stress. The attack began well with the XXII Rifles finally taking substantial casualties. The men of Under Pressure would not retreat, giving hell to the defenders. But it was not enough. Unwilling to withdraw, all 500 men of the unit perished against the defenses.

The men of Somebody to Love pulled the next straw. They had served Carthage well in the past and Hannibal hoped they could finally breach the city walls. Fed into the meat grinder, these brave and lone men followed Under Pressure into destruction. The men of the XXIX Rifles cheered at the destruction of so many Carthaginian warriors and had proven themselves an elite band.

But Carthage was not done. The men of Another One Bites the Dust provided their name to be accurate. The XXXIX Rifles lacked proper support and, ammunition dwindling, were overrun by the Carthaginian Cavalry. This left the XI Pikemen Brigade TA to try to hold the line. The Dandelions were next in the order of battle and swept aside the antiquated XI Brigade with ease. It was a sign of Isabella’s desperation that she would rely on such a unit to hold a major city. The Dominos had begun to fall and the Princes of the Universe, a rather cocky band that continuously shouted ‘there can be only one!’ drew the lot to renew the attack on the XXII Rifles.

Brutalized by the Under Pressure company and low on ammunition, the riflemen had displaced and were now holding the eastern defenses of the city. The IX Longbows were also trying to reposition but the Carthaginian army was not about to give them that chance. The Princes of the Universe put an end to the XXII Rifles and, in an amazing display of cruelty, beheaded all of the men that surrendered. Hannibal was convinced these men were a little deranged and insane, but at least they were working for Carthage.

Finally Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry was left to run down the IX Longbows. This was done with ease and the city was destroyed. A band of silk workers were combined with the remainder of the population to create six new bands of Spanish slaves – Spanish15-20.

On the ESC the unwise XLI Rifles had advanced through Sumerian territory. They were easily seen by the scouts of OMIA and, with the help of Stone’s Throw (1st Catapult Battery) were easily destroyed.

The Infantry of the Glow Worms and the elite knights of Old Blood and Guts were ordered into a field protected by the Toxic Fortresses to prepare room for an airfield.

It did not take long for Isabella to respond to this threat. The ‘wandering’ LI Independent (cavalry) Brigade was the first to appear. The Spanish cavalry did not lack for bravery and their charge was spectacular. Only the heavier bolt action rifles of the Carthaginian infantry could not be matched by the lighter caliber repeating rifles of the cavalry. The Carthaginian infantry had range on the cavalrymen and they used it to powerful effect, striking like death in the ranks of the Spanish.

The I and II Conquistador Brigades quickly followed the attack but it was a waste of Spanish lives. The heavy rifles of the Glow Worms was devastating to this lightly armored and armed men as well as their dogs. All of them were ground into the bloody mud by the end of a long day and the Glow Worms were recognized as an elite band.

In 1950AD Carthage established a range of airfields on the ESC as well as an airfield upon the Spanish mainland. This severely reduced the need for ocean transports. A mass of troops were immediately airlifted to the Spanish mainland, including additional infantry to hold the airfield. Hannibal decided he liked this arrangement. The Spanish seemed incapable of resisting their urge to attack and without cavalry, their conquistadors stood almost no chance at the Carthaginian Infantry.

One more the XIIIV Musket Brigade was smashed by Spathaginian naval bombardment. By the time the Warm Fuzzies appeared the defenders simply laid down their arms. The cavalry commander allowed the rattled defenders to surrender and return to their homes so long as they promised not to take up arms against Carthage again. It was decided that it would be better to return the broken men to their Spanish neighbors so they could see what happened with the gods of Carthage were denied.

At the same time the VI Conquistador Brigade TA was overrun by Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry. The Carthaginian Cavalrymen suffered no wounds in the battle; the cavalry men simply picked their targets from afar and killed the rude men one at a time. The Spanish black powder pistols and rifles proved completely inadequate against Carthage’s modern repeating rifles.

The infantry of C.W. McCall were sent to cover the retreating Warm Fuzzies while Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry retreated to the cover of the Defenders.

Looking good, Ral!

Conquistadors can only be attacked offensively by Cavalry. If no cavalry exist and also cannot be built, consider this order closed.

I'm working on the next set now. I do agree, it is kind of an odd request. What it does do, however, is that it forces me to hold back some cavalry to deal with the conquistadors that are showing up one or two a turn. Those are cavs I can't send with my stack to attack cities.

But really those conquistadors don't have much of a chance against Carthaginian infantry.

P.S. I just used the last supplied name other than the list of guerillas which I am still working through and intend to finish. Anyone got more names, I'll use them. Otherwise I'll resurrect some old dead/disbanded units. Seen Elephants anyone?

Part 1
Spoiler :

Hannibal watched as the clock moved to the Twelve o’clock position. The crowd outside the place began to cheer. They cheered for the great gods of Carthage that had led them to dominance over the entire world. The cheered for power of their military. They cheered for the power of their navy. They cheered to be Carthaginian in a world that had seen the passage of so many other civilizations. And their cheered for a Happy New Year.

The date was January 1st, 1951AD. Hannibal placed a mark on the calendar. Thirty six thousand, five hundred and twenty four days left to understand the working of the gods. This was more time than the average Carthaginian could hope to live. It paled in comparison to the more than two million days he had already lived. Glorious years, for the most part. But some difficult years as well. Most of them without so much as a door.

Hannibal smiled as the Toxic Priests bade him a Happy New Year. Carthage was the undisputed power of the world and champagne was flowing freely.

“Great Hannibal, those cheers are for you as much as for the gods. The gods had the wisdom to guide but it required someone strong enough to follow our commands to make holy visions a reality.” The Toxic Priests praise the Carthaginian leader.

“If Carthage has survived and prospered, priests of the great Toxicman007, it is only because of the gods. Many nights I would lay awake wondering what could be done to make the people of Carthage more secure, more prosperous.” Hannibal said solemnly. “And every morning the gods of Carthage would answer.”

“Indeed, Hannibal. And the gods have a new command.” The Toxic Priests said in their sagely way. “Now that the Toxic Fortresses have secured the landing and our armies are prepared to move against the Spanish homeland there is a new concern.”

“Concern?” Hannibal was surprised. “We have destroyed two of their largest cities. Their core cities are now lay bare to our attack. Even with only five cities our spies report that the people of Carthage account for two of every three people alive today. Their doom is assured!”

“Do not be so certain, Hannibal. The gods say that there is still great danger that lies ahead of Carthage.” The Toxic Priests explained. “And that danger has a face and a name. It is the Conquistador.”

“Conquistadors?” Hannibal was now shocked. “Those rude buffoons with their mangy mutts? They are little more than children playing at war.”

“Careful, Hannibal. Many a plan would have succeeded if it wasn’t for those kids and their dog.” The Toxic Priests admonished the Carthaginian leader. “It is vital that you take the utmost precautions when fighting them.”

Hannibal could appreciate this wisdom and nodded. “What would the wise priests of Toxicman007 suggest for the disposal of these elite Spanish units?”

The priests nodded in return, satisfied by the change in Hannibal’s tone. “We must move against them from a position of strength. This means that only our modern cavalry may engage these fierce foes. This is the command of Toxicman007 and it must be fulfilled.”

This seemed slightly excessive seeing as how the Carthaginian military could easily absorb the losses that may be incurred be a more forceful assault but Hannibal nodded his agreement. How could he do otherwise? The people were out in the streets cheering the glory of the Carthaginian gods.

Hannibal’s reprieve was interrupted by the arrival of the Science Advisor. “Great Hannibal I have good news. Our scientists have mastered the secrets of mass production.”

“We can now make the holy divination devices of the priests is massive quantities! Thousands have already been produced and they are quickly becoming a household fixture. No one in Carthage would dare do anything without consulting their own magic 8-ball! We have even managed to ship some to our troops overseas by using our new airfields.”

“We can’t transport incenses, furs, coal or iron via airfield but we can litter two continents with these inane little clay balls of idiocy?” Hannibal demanded.

The Science Advisor was taken aback and dared not say anything against the mighty Hannibal. He had no desire to be the next test subject at the University of CELTICEMPIRE. The Science Advisor quickly hustled out of Hannibal’s presence. There was no doubt as to the next leap in technology. To fulfill Hannibal’s promise to the great god of doors, Dumanios, the Carthaginian Priests had only to research Motorized Transportation. This effort would be made all the easier by the fact that every university and center of research in Carthage had been generously equipped with magic ‘8’ balls of their own.

Brilliance, the Science Advisory thought, sheer brilliance.

Reports of the Spanish war revealed that the XIX Conquistador Brigade TA, XXI Musketmen Brigade TA and V Medieval Infantry Brigade advanced against the Carthaginian airfield. Before orders could be distributed Hannibal was informed of a change in the name conventions at the Toxic Fortresses. Many of the soldiers holding the forts were natives of Toxic’s Café and though the names were unofficial, they were now ‘stuck’ in the military nomenclature. It was pointless to resist.

The first order of business was for Fort Mocha to bombard the careless XXI Musketmen that had wondered with range of the cannon and catapult batteries that commanded the field. Hit’n’Miss (3rd Catapult Battery) was true to its name. At least the second half. Then the cannons of You're Fired (5th Cannon Battery) opened up and utterly failed to make an impression.

The complete failure of the artillery left the elite Knights of the Order of the Oak (which was actually a band of heavy cavalry) to attack the veteran muskets. Sallying out of Fort Mocha under the cover of the cannons and catapults, the heavy cavalry rushed the ranks of muskets and were amongst the defenders within minutes. The lances and swords of the cavalrymen proved effective against the musketmen but the XXI put up a hard fight, firing their muskets at pointblank range in some instances. At that distance there was no need for massed fire and more than 100 Carthaginians lay dead and an equal amount were wounded. Many would require amputations from the horrid wounds caused by the muskets.

Weary, the Knights of the Order of the Oak gathered their wounded and retreated to Fort Mocha, leaving the field, if only temporarily to the V Medieval Infantry Brigade TA. This did not last long. The elite heavy cavalry of the Cruel Knights charged from the hillside Fort Mocha.

Surprisingly the V Medieval put up as much of a struggle as the XXI Muskets, inflicting nearly equal damage to the Cruel Knights, heavy maces crushing helms, maiming horses and breaking bones. Another fifty Carthaginian men lay dead but thrice as many would require a long time to recuperate from their wounds. Luckily the garrison soldiers at For Mocha were becoming skilled at healing the many wounded men of Carthage’s military.

The final assault was against the XIX Conquistador Brigade TA. As commanded by the Toxic Priests, only a cavalry charge would suffice to break the elite Spanish force. The Warm Fuzzies, returning fresh from their victory at Cordoba surprised the Conquistadors. But the Warm Fuzzies had not been unobserved in their attack. The dogs that always accompanied the conquistadors stole the surprise from the attack. When the cavalrymen swarmed on the field, the XIX Brigade was prepared. A great slaughter ensued and the Warm Fuzzies were surrounded before they realized the depths of their mistake. Some attempted to break and run but the cruel dogs of the conquistadors easily hunted them down, preventing anyone from hiding, evading or escaping. The entire unit was wiped out.

The Toxic Priests, it would seem, had been prophetic after all.

Unwilling to leave their dead on the field to be picked over by the horrid Spaniards, the cavalry of Chip Davis were ordered into the field. Hannibal thought that Chip Davis was an odd man to be given command of a Cavalry company but he had been sponsored by the priests of CommandoBob. This, of course, made his credentials beyond contestation. The confidence of CommandoBob was, it seemed, well justified. Without so much as a scratch Chip Davis steamrolled the XIX Brigade. The scent of blood filed the fresh aire and the XIX Brigade evaporated like a fine mist pressed by the heat of the morning sun. The cavalrymen, in good spirits at retrieving their fallen comrades, gathered together later than night and passed the keg in their memory under the cover of a shade tree.

The invading force reduced to rotting corpses, the Defenders covered the advance of 3,000 modern cavalry upon Salamanca.

In 1952AD Toxic’s Café completed the construction of the Toxic Airport.

Hannibal held a great celebration to honor the building of the capital’s airport and the great god Toxicman007. Fights would now leave from the capital to the Port of Death every four hours around the clock. In this way the citizens of Carthage could enjoy the many golf courses that now dominated the continent.

This was not the only good news, however. The year 1952AD also saw the creation of the first commercial dock at Smilin’ Bob and New Crobuzon.

Reports from the Sparthaginian fleet indicated that Spain had put one last frigate into the ocean in a futile attempt to protect its coast. ICS Old Man Ironsides DD-01 and ICS Osman's Demise FR-06 took turns at target practice, bombarding the Spanish frigate into driftwood. At the end of the bombardment only a burn husk remained of the once valiant Spanish ship. Hannibal gave them full marks for bravery. Even knowing the futility of the gesture they had still chose to die at sea as soldiers and sailors rather than huddling in the port of Salamanca.

At the same time a landing force was assembled aboard ICS Cunning of Ivriz to take the city of Pamplona. Reports from ICS Massacre of Bangalore G-03 indicated that the city was held only by the VI Searman Tercios SLEG; a band of Spanish legionaries.

The final attack on Salamanca was also staged. The city was well defended by the XLIV and XXX Rifle Brigades of the Territorial Army (TA). Normally this would have fallen under the Eastern Command but that had ceased to exist. Now the Carthaginian forces faced the Central Command that had consolidated under Isabella’s leadership to include Salamanca, Madrid and Santiago. The Western Command now included Seville, Murcia, and Valencia. Pamplona, Vitoria and Palma would remain under the command and protection of the Spanish Legion.

The rather hostile men of the Boys Named Sue were drawn forward to begin the assault on the veteran XLIV Rifles. Hannibal wasn’t sure why there had been a rash of boys being named Sue in Carthage. It was one of those mysterious that was probably better left unsolved. Hannibal was, however, very grateful for their service. Against incredible odds the veteran cavalrymen stormed the fortified suburbs of the sprawling city of more than a quarter million Spaniards. Besides weathering a storm of Spanish confetti being thrown by the civilians, the veteran rifles put one hell of a defense, causing severe casualties amongst the lead elements of the company.

Hannibal was not certain if the commander, also named Sue, should have pressed the attack after such horrendous losses. After inflicting over 200 casualties upon the defending rifles Hannibal was more than satisfied by their sacrifice. And though they had lost more than 300 of their own men, the Sues pressed the attack. It was a fierce fight but in the end the Sues proved their strength, overrunning the last fortified position of the XLIV and leaving the core of the city open to attack.

Unable to ask for more from the Boys Named Sue, the arrogant cavalrymen of We Are the Champions were called forward next. The veteran rifles of the XXX bristled with bayonets, well aware of the brutal fate of the XLIV Brigade. The surprise was gone and the Champions suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the XXX Brigade. Though they charged again and again their strength was smashed against the Spanish rifles with nothing to show for their losses; not so much as a scratch.

It was decided that something more drastic was called for and the elite Toxic’s 4th Cavalry were drawn forward. Finally some headway was made and the 4th Toxic put up a hell of a fight. But the XXX dug deeper down and the merciless rifles swept rider after rider from their saddles until there was virtually nothing left of the 4th Toxic. Nearly the entire command had been wiped out in less than an hour. Only a few survivors straggled away from the battlefield. The XXX also lost half of its numbers in the exchange.

Worse, the II Rifle Volunteer Brigade FDOT, a reserve force, had been hastily assembled to cover the withdrawal of the remnants of the XXX Rifles. The elite Toxic’s 6th Cavalry were called upon to break the stalemate and clear away the volunteer rifles. But it was the 6th Cavalry that were broken instead. Arrogant in their skills and facing a volunteer brigade, the commanders of the 6th Toxic organized a direct charge. It was a complete failure. The II Volunteer Brigade (rifles) killed 200 cavalrymen in the opening exchange and though the 6th Toxic inflicted damage of their own the final tally was 400 Carthaginian cavalrymen to 100 Spanish Rifles.

Carthage’s effort had been bled but it was still possible to obtain victory. Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry followed the defeat of its comrades. Once more they Carthaginian Cavalry faced the veteran XXX Rifles. Three hundred more Carthaginian cavalry lay dead upon the field with out gaining any ground.

Toxic’s 9th Cavalry took advantage of the exhausting combat and made a final drive against the XXX Rifles. Weary and low on ammunition they were finally forced to displace and their position was overrun. Many of the veterans, however, escaped behind a second barricade and reformed.

The Cavalry of Wolf Creek Pass watched the XXX break and charged through the ranks of the 9th Toxic. It was clear that the Toxic Cavalry, severely punished already, could not advance further until they were able to refit and receive replacements. Immediately applying pressure to the reforming XXX Rifles, the new formations broke apart and ran again, leaving the core of the city vulnerable to attack. Only the wounded II Volunteers remained between Carthage and victory.

It was all that was needed. The fortunes of war had turned in their favor. Carthage had no strength left to press the attack. The wounded needed to be evacuated and fresh units brought forward.

Hannibal cursed at the world. He also cursed at the TIA-CHI, though it was no fault of his own. The replacement trade advisor had informed Hannibal of an incredible opportunity.

Hannibal wept at the injustice of the world. Why was it that the Americans had managed to make such useful trade deals? It seemed as if America had a new lease on life, at least for the next 20 years. At least, Hannibal thought, things were happening faster once more. Rather than a treaty lasting 40 years it now lasted only 20 years. This would be the last deal, however. In 20 years Carthage’s research should nearly be complete. With this final deal Carthage would have enough gold to make Hannibal’s dream – and the dream of the gods – come true once and for all!

Grudgingly the deal was struck. It would do the Americans no good as they had no oil to produce airplanes.

New reached Hannibal that Spain and the Byzantines had signed a trade embargo against Carthage. The blind leading the blind. Theodora should have known better when the crippled Spanish Frigate from Salamanca, rather than running for port and repairs, attacked ICS Massacre of Bangalore G-03. The Carthaginian galley, long in the service of Carthage, braved the storm of cannon fire and drew within reach of their bows. Setting their arrows aflame, the steady Sparthaginian sailors began to rain fire down on the already ruined Frigate. It only took one arrow to detonate the Frigate’s magazine. She sunk in under three minutes.

In yet another foolish military move Isabella then ordered the VIX Conquistador Brigade TA to attack the Espresso Airfield. This assault would be made against the elite infantry of the glow worms. It has as much chance of dislodging the infantrymen as an ant had of moving a mountain. The elite glow worms shrugged off the attack with distain.

1953AD was spent retreating the wounded Carthaginian units back towards Fort Cappuccino while new cavalry units moves under the cover of the defenders. With the assistance of ICS The Crimmerian Hunt TR-01 Old Man Iron’s Army finally reached Spain. His primary responsibility would be complete the assault upon the Spanish core and destroy their horse herds and iron deposits.

Simultaneously ICS The Crimmerian Hunt TR-01 began its trip back to the ESC to pick up more units that could then land near Vitoria and destroy the annoying little city.

ICS Cunning of Ivriz CA-02 dropped the veteran infantry of 10-4 along with the elite knights of Old Blood and Guts and the elite heavy cavalry of the Hessians next to the city of Pamplona. The feeble VI Searman Tercios SLEG looked small by comparison to Carthage’s mighty armies.

To add insult to injury ICS Osman's Demise FR-06 bombarded Pamplona in the hopes of demoralizing the VI Spearman into surrendering. To the surprise of the captain of the Demise they discovered the port of Pamplona to be under the guard of no less than two Spanish frigates. With a wolfish grin the Demise’s cannons began to shell the port rather than the spear formations. The land forces would just need to take their chances, the captain thought ruefully. There was more honor in capturing a Spanish prize then bombarding lowly spearmen.

Informed of the find, the destroyer ICS Old Man Ironsides DD-01 responded as well and added their 5-inch main cannon to the fire and brimstone falling on Pamplona.

The TIA-CHI once more approached Hannibal in 1954AD with a new deal. Sumeria was willing to surrender their world map, all 2 pieces of gold in their treasury and knowledge of communism for knowledge of fascism. It was mostly a nonsensical trade but Hannibal agreed to it. At least it gained Carthage communism.

More telling was the fact that there were no counterattacks at the end of 1953AD. Spain, it seemed, was already whipped.

Old Man Iron ordered his army into the field accompanied by Toxic’s 10th Cavalry. Their immediate goal was to eliminate the Spanish source of horses and then iron. To the surprise of the old man a band of Spanish settlers were encountered.

The army was too exhausted to overrun the silly settlers so instead they settled for trading the wondrous items of ivory crafted in Carthage for clothes made of Spanish silks.

The first attack upon Spain was led by the Defenders. Once more in the line of fire, the city of Salamanca was still held by the II Rifle Volunteer Brigade FDOT. In addition, the city’s size had shrunk considerably indicating that the citizens had probably been pressed into service, rifles pressed into the hands of the young and old in an attempt to defend Isabella’s throne.

The first rank of Cavalry to make the assault was a freshly trained band lead by two men – Smoky and the Bandit. Hannibal was not sure that such men should be given command but once more could not question the wisdom of the gods. Smoky was named after one of Hannibal’s former enemies – Smoking Jaguar of the Mayans, while the Bandit proclaimed his rouge nature with pride. Hannibal withheld final judgment until the results of their attack upon Salamanca was clear.

As it turned out his concern was well founded. Four hundred cavalrymen followed Smokey and the Bandit into battle. Less than one retreated with the cowards. Hannibal did, however, give them some credit. They had been ambushed by the VI Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT. Where the Spaniards had come up with longbows Hannibal had no idea. What the heck happened to the Spanish rifles? Simpletons.

The elite Geek Squad made the next attack in the hope of destroying the II Rifle Brigade. This scored only minor success. As the attack began to gain traction the VII Conscript Rifle Brigade FDOT rushed into flanking positions and poured enfilading fire into the Geek Squad. One hundred Spaniards died in the struggle but four hundred Carthaginians lay dead or wounded.

Once more the Carthaginian dead were piling up. This was not good for Hannibal’s desires for a lighting fast war. Victorious before, Chip Davis was called upon to break the stalemate that was developing at Salamanca. Ever true, the steamroller of Mannheim carried home the attack. The veteran cavalry crushed the VII Conscript Rifle Brigade into the dust, leaving the II Volunteers vulnerable to attack once more.

The Cavalry of Another One Bites the Dust drew the next lot in the attack. Unfortunately they spent far to much time hanging onto the edge of their seats and within a hour three hundred more Carthaginian Cavalry lay dead while the Spaniards had suffered little more than a few scratches.

The Cavalry of the Convoy finally broke the curse and overran the II Volunteers but before the city could be forced into surrender yet another rifle brigade had appeared. The IX Conscript Rifles fumbled with their newly issued weapons even as Buford T. Justice led his cavalry on the attack. To their credit they stood their round in defense of their homes but Carthaginian arms finally prevailed and the defenses crumbled. This left the VI Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT for the Dandelions to clean up. While somewhat anticlimactic, the longbows were easily cleaned out of their sniper perches but at the cost of thirty more dead and twice that in wounded.

The city burned. Three new slave bands were formed: Spanish21-23.

The next target was the fragile city of Pamplona. The elite Hessians drew forward to face the VI Searman Tercios SLEG. Though 3,000 spears bristled against the 600 heavy cavalry, Carthage held the distinct advantage. Even so, the Hessians suffered considerable casualties in their bid to overrun the VI Tercios. Ultimately successful, it would be some time before the Carthaginian unit could once more assault an enemy position.

The destruction of the VI Spearman Tercios SLEG did not settle the dispute, however. The X Spearman Tercios SLEG had rapidly been formed and sent into the trenches. This left the final assault to Old Blood and Guts. The elite knights calmly went about their business, cutting down the Spanish legionnaires with ease. Old Blood and Guts quickly set the city on fire; a fire that rapidly spread to the harbor and the Spanish frigates. Unable to leave port because of the Carthaginian blockade, particularly the awaiting ICS Old Man Ironsides DD-01, the Spanish frigates caught fire and began to burn until their powder magazines ignited and sent the ships and their crew to a watery death.

The entire enemy counterattack for 1954AD was to retreat the band of wayward settlers that had tried to ‘sneak’ past Old Man Iron. If that was the best the Isabella could do she should just pack it up and go home.

Although the war was going reasonably well, war weariness was beginning to be a real pain. Hannibal had to order more entertainers to be hired and money thrown into the streets to keep the fickle people of Carthage satisfied in 1955AD.

Part 2
Spoiler :

In 1956AD the embargo between America and Spain against Carthage came to an end. Carthage advanced three separate groups to press the attack. The first was Old Man Iron and his cavalry escort – Toxic’s 10th Cavalry. Between the two of them they had devastated the Spanish countryside, dispersing their herd of horses and ruining mines and irrigated fields. The second group was a band of cavalry and infantry bound by transport to land outside Vitoria on the ESC. Finally the Defenders were now covering an mixed army of 2,400 heavy cavalry, 2,000 knights, and 400 modern cavalry. This massive group was descending upon nothing less than Isabella’s capital, Madrid. Madrid was already under fire by the Sparthaginian navy and at least three veteran rifle brigades had been indentified defending the city – the I, IV and XIV Rifles (TA).

The war against Spain had entered a lull but it was renewed with vigor in 1957AD. The open battle was at Vitoria where the Holy War was set to continue. By the rules of the Holy War the next two attacks belonged to Sparthage. Already Derpy Hooves was in place to attack The XX Rifle Tercios SLEG. The regular band of Rifleman had watched the mass of Carthaginian cavalry and infantry swarm off their transports and were already unsteady in their lines. Vitoria, a tundra locked city, had no hope withstand the siege.

Derpy Hooves, fresh on the beech and in typical Derpy fashion, instantly ordered a charge. Also in typically Derpy fasion the enemy was utterly shocked by the illogical charge and even though the II Longbow Tercios SLEG tried to provide covering fire, the battle was over in the less than 30 minutes. Depry Hooves had paid for the victory in the blood of her own men, but the city now lay vulnerable to attack. Victory Points: 24.3 [6(D)x3(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 407 Elephantium: 397.25

The cry of ‘Follow me darlings!” Rang out as Rarity emulated Derpy’s charge only this time against the elite spears of the XIX Spear Tercios SLEG. This was really not much of a matchup and Rarity easily destroyed the XIX Legion. Victory Points: 13.5 [2(D)x5(HP)x1.35(T)]; Sparthage: 420.5 Elephantium: 397.25

The Paladins of the Peanut remained to destroy the vulnerable II Longbows. This was another horrendously imbalanced battle and the II Longbows were swept away with the city of Vitoria.

The Carthaginian units quickly boarded the transports again to avoid an incident with Sumeria and sailed towards Palma.

The Sparthaginian navy had begun bombardment of Madrid but only with minimal effect. It was clear that the gathered army of the Defenders would need to pay in blood to capture the city.

The battle opened slightly different from the others. As the Princes of the Universe were the only modern cavalry present it was decided that they would make the first attack in the hopes of eliminating the toughest defenders. The I and IV Rifle Brigades TA had been wounded by the naval bombardment leaving the XIV Brigade to guard the approach to the city. The gambit worked better than could have possibly been expected; the rather arrogant Princes of the Universe crushed the XIV Brigade under the weight of their firepower, closing only at the last moment to bring their sabers to bear to decapitate their foes. This was in spite of a defensive arrow barrage by the cowardly XII Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT.

Following this pattern the Toxic Knights made the next advance only to find that the XXXV Rifle Brigade TA had been move up by Western Command to assist in the defense of the city. This attack was less effective. Once again a barrage of arrows slowed the advance, this time from the XIV Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT before the Toxic Knights were nearly wiped out by the IV Rifle Brigade TA. Only a small group of the Toxic Knights escaped the deadly defense of Madrid.

The Trolls followed and were easily repulsed by the XXXV Rifle Brigade. The Blackened Company did little better, trading 400 knights for 100 defending rifles. The Snow Knights tried to do an end run around the I Brigade but was caught between the freshly advancing IV Brigade and was decimated, barely managing to retreat.

After this humiliating cascade of defeats the Carthaginian generals called a halt to the slaughter and called up reserves form the Toxic Barricades. Word was also sent to OMI to bring his army to Madrid to help break Isabella’s capital and put an end to Spanish arrogance once and for all! Fort Cappicino immediately dispatched 4,000 modern cavalry though it would take some time to get them into position to attack.

Old Man Iron answered the call but not before collapsing Isabella’s iron mines close to Seville. Unless iron had already been secured for various projects Spain would be unable to produce anything with more offensive power than brigade of longbows or rifles. Hannibal wondered why the Spaniards even bothered to continue fighting.

The Science Advisor once more appeared before Hannibal with good news. “Great Hannibal! We have discovered the secrets of creating the powerful Bolos!”

We are little confused because somehow this breakthrough did not lead to ablative armor, infinite repeaters or hellbores, but never the less they are pretty kick butt machines! Unfortunately we did manage to create a form of artificial intelligence, but it calls everyone ‘Dave’ and seems to be out to kills us all. We have disconnected it for now.”

“Do we have a bolo ready to be put into the field?” Hannibal asked, very eager.

“Indeed, great Hannibal! The prototype just rolled out of the factory at Caseboy97’s Asylum!

“The factories are working at this very moment to push more of them off the assemble lines using mass production techniques!” The Science Advisor reported.

“We may not have much of a chance to use them in combat,” The Military Advisor reported, both happy and yet wistfully. “Our forces are crushing the Spanish. Madrid will soon fall and then the remainder of their pitiful civilization will simple fade away.”

Hannibal found these to be good words even if it meant that the Bolos and the Dinochrome brigade were never fully utilized in glorious battle. Hannibal was proud, however, to attend the ceremony that designated the first tank as a Bolo.

These fierce fighting machines would fight as nearly independent units. The first of the Dinochrome brigade was comprised of only 4 Bolos. Even so they had almost three times the power of 400 modern cavalrymen and more than twice their defensive capabilities. These were fierce machines indeed!

Humorous reports were received from the Spanish warfront that the XIV Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT had foolishly attempted to sally out of Madrid and attack the Puppies. The veteran infantrymen, already warned of an attack by the pickets of the Defenders, dug deep to protect the 4,000 modern cavalry under the umbrella of their protection. The XIV Brigade attacked and it was Carthage’s turn to inflict heavy losses on the Spaniards without suffering any considerable wounds themselves. The entire Longbow Brigade was destroyed in a fierce 2 hour battle. Modern .30 caliber rifle was devastating against the antiquated longbows used by the Spanish forces.

In a separate military blunder Isabella had ordered the L Volunteer Longbow Brigade to move from Seville to Madrid but the formation had to slow as it approached the pickets of OMIA and could not reach the safety of the city. They would be easy pickings.

Hannibal was informed that an amphibious landing was accomplished by Palma after a brief shore bombardment by Sparthaginian Frigates. Only the V Musket Tercios SLEG was identified and if that was the best that the Spanish had to offer it would be a short battle.

The Spanish had, however, settled the city of Teruel right under the noses of the Carthaginian invaders. This, of course, was incredibly foolish. It was also not the current focus of the Carthaginian war effort. Madrid had to fall.

The attack on Madrid began with a naval bombardment and once more the I and IV Rifle Brigades TA had been wounded by the naval bombardment. This left the XXXV Rifle Brigade to hold the forward trenches.

The Carthaginian generals quickly decided that it would require the strength of OMIA to break the defenses of Madrid to give the attackers a chance at victory. The Old Man first moved his army across the river. Then, with a firm resolve, the attack began on the XXXV Rifle Brigade TA. Eighteen hundred knights swarmed the defenses of Madrid, saturating the defenses of the city. The XII Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT had attempted a bombardment slow them down but it was to no avail. Even with so many Carthaginian knights attacking in a collective the battle was desperate. For a moment there was worry that the XXXV might even destroy the entire army. But then, in a show of strength, the Old Man himself led the charge that broke the XXXV Rifles once and for all.

The city defenses cracked, the elite Toxic’s 10th Cavalry drove into the opening. Finally there was movement in the lines. Toxic’s 10th swift strike caught the I Rifle Brigade TA scrambling to cover the loss of the 400 files of the XXXV. The repeating rifles of the modern cavalry overcame the older muzzle loaders of the I Rifle and the brigade was quickly overrun.

There could be no going back now. The Princes of the Universe tried to flank the IV Rifle Brigade hoping that the distraction on the other side of the city would give them an opening as well but the IV held firm, sweeping 300 cavalrymen out of the saddle and suffering only the loss of 100 rifles. This was more serious than it seemed, however, for now the IV Rifles were at only half strength. Aabraxan’s Honor Guard would not relent, however. Certain of their weakness the elite heavy cavalry charged the IV Rifles but were brutally repulsed.

Finally it was decided that only OMIA had the strength to finish dislodging the IV and an attack was ordered by the remaining 1,000 knight able bodied knights. This was a wise choice. The IV, overwhelmed and already low on ammunition surrendered their position to the advancing army without a shot fired.

They were not the last defenders, however. The conscript IX Volunteer Rifle Brigade FDOT was already moving into place, another 200 healthy Spanish rifles. The decision was already clear. The Cruel Knights were drawn forward to make the attack. The powerful attacks on the city had shattered the will of the defenders as much as their strength. After a half-hearted defense the IX Rifles surrendered. Under strained and without supply, the commanders realized that victory was now impossible.

Their surrender left the XII Volunteer Longbow Brigade FDOT exposed. The Knights of the White Mountain charged the cowardly longbow and, though they put up an excellent struggle, were overwhelmed but the elite Carthaginian heavy cavalry were far to powerful to repel. The final defense of Madrid melted away and the city defenses collapsed.

Isabella fled her burning city, leaving the citizens to be enslaved as the Spanish24-27. This left Seville as the new Spanish Capital.

The Cavalry of Another One Bites the Dust was dispatched to put an end to fledgling city of Teruel on to find that the city was guarded by nothing more than a brigade of longbows!

The Cavalrymen were nearly sent to the infirmary after suffering uncontrolled fits of laughter. Recovering from their mirth, the Captain of the Biters sent him men into action. The VII Longbow Brigade TA put up what was almost a respectable fight before the cavalrymen overran their position and destroyed the settlement of Teruel. As an extra prize 2 pieces of gold were found in the city coffers – the city council had not yet had time to distribute the payroll for the VII Longbows. Hannibal graciously added it to Carthage’s own treasury to help pay the Carthaginian troops. :D

For their swift action in combat Another One Bites the Dust was given recognition as an elite band and 100 additional cavalry were dispatched to serve with the company.

The 4,000 cavalry that had been dispatched towards Madrid were immediately commanded to alter course and go to Santiago to begin a siege. Another 1,900 various other cavalry units were moved to cover wounded units that were on the retreat. The attack on Spain was, for now, at an end. The last action was to airlift the 4 newly formed Bolos to the Spanish mainland via the Espresso Airport.

Although trade had slowed considerable, the TIA-CHI recommended giving America knowledge of communism for the bargain price of its world map, 26 pieces of gold and tribute of 10 pieces of gold. The deal was struck for the sake of keeping American dirt poor.

It was the Military Advisor that finished the year of 1959AD. Hannibal was happy to see his most distinguished Military Advisor. Both of them knew that the great battles waged in the name of the Carthaginian gods were nearly at an end. But they also knew that one last perfect storm was yet to be unleashed. This would require timing and planning. Both Hannibal and the Military Advisor were good at those things.

“Great Hannibal,” The Military Advisor stood at attention before the leader of Carthage. “It has come to my attention that Caseboy97’s Asylum could complete a new Bolo command for the Dinochrome brigade every year with only slightly more labor.”

“How much more labor?” Hannibal inquired. He was well aware of the hundreds of thousands of slave workers that were taking up space in Carthage, causing pollution and generally doing nothing of value.

“We believe a new Bolo command could be completed with only the sacrifice of 100,000 slaves each year. This is only one slave band every year. This is almost nothing.”

Hannibal agreed. In fact, it was less than almost nothing. Hannibal ordered that a slave band be sent to Caseboy97’s Asylum every year to work on the new Bolos. That they would be worked to death was of no concern to Hannibal.

In 1960AD this effort was rewarded in Caseboy97’s Asylum with the formation of a new Bolo command. This was 367-FRC. Given their last initials of FRC they were nicknamed Africa.

Militarily the land forces of Spain were at a halt. Longbow Brigades were struggling to get into place but with all of the damage to the roadways and infrastructure of Spain their movements were sluggish. Even within their own lands the cavalry of Carthage was more mobile. This would spell the end of Isabella and Spain.

On the sea, however, Isabella had one last card to play. At the American crossing the Spanish frigate Silver Ghost slipped out of the fog and attacked ICS Arrow of Ice CA-09. ICS Battle's Revenge FR-18, alerted to the presence of the Silver Ghost at the last moment could not intercept but began to bombard the incoming frigate. This was not enough to stop the Silver Ghost. But it was enough time to give ICS Arrow of Ice CA-09 to load its cannons and execute a broadside into Silver Ghost. The Captain timed the attack perfectly and the Ghost’s powder exploded, unleashing only a single volley of its own. This volley struck true but only inflicted minor damage to the caravel.

Bombardment at Santiago began with Sparthaginian Frigates and destroyer ICS Shrub of Civinator III DD-02. The Shrub’s powerful shells landed with great accuracy amongst the IX Rifle Brigade TA, digging them out of the trenches and killing more than half of the veteran band. ICS Honor of Civinator FR-04 followed the attack and struck the XX Volunteer Rifle Brigade FDOT. Spotters indicated that another hundred men were wounded or killed in the bombardment.

The heartening news was that the forwards scouts of the elite Toxic’s 3rd Cavalry reported that the XX Volunteer Brigade remained in the trenches without any visible support. An attack was launched immediately. The XX Brigade, already shell shocked, quickly broke but not until inflicting significant damage on Toxic’s 3rd. Once more they would be withdrawn for replacements and refitting. But not before they reported that the IX Rifles had not gone far. Wounded though they were, the under strength brigade had no choice but to try to hold the city.

The elite Toxic’s 4th Cavalry took advantage of the positioning and attacked immediately. To the great surprise of the Carthaginian commanders, Toxic’s 4th blitzed into the city with high hopes. The IX Brigade initially began to retreat, sucking the cavalrymen into the city. Then the XXXI Spearman Brigade FDOT leapt from concealment, encircling the cavalrymen as the IX Rifles unleashed a fury of incredibly accurate fire into Toxic’s 4th.

Toxic’s 6th Cavalry, seeing the predicament, immediately charged. They smashed through the XXXI Spearman Brigade FDOT but it was already too late for Toxic’s 4th Cavalry. Even man had been ruthlessly slain. Smokey and the Bandit, in close support, fell upon the now vulnerable IX Rifles. But looks were deceiving, as had been proven several times already, and Smokey’s flanking maneuver was soundly destroyed. Only the crafty Bandit managed to close on the hardened positions of the IX Rifles and finally silence them.

This left the city wide open to the Bandit and the city was savagely sacked.

The unfortunate citizens of Santiago formed the Spanish28-32 slave bands.

This left the road to Seville open to the 4,000 waiting modern cavalry. The cavalry of Buford T. Justice scouted the immediate area around the city. It was unlikely that the city would have received much additional support. The Carthaginian Commanders suspected that there would be two veteran bands of rifles at the most, perhaps supported by some spears, pikes or muskets.

As was expected the XXIII Rifle Brigade TA held the forward trenches. But now that the entire Central Command had been destroyed, the Western Command had no resources to draw upon for reinforcement.

The Carthaginian Generals, expecting high casualties, nonetheless ordered the assault. Into the valley of death road the four thousand. Buford T. Justice did not flinch from his duty and at first it appeared as if his men stood a good chance of destroying the XXIII Brigade. At the last moment the XXIII Rifles charged bayonets and it was rifle against saber. Rifle won the day and the cavalry company was cut off and destroyed.

The company of Old Home Bread came next and met the XVI Rifle Brigade already moving into position. This time fortune was with the attackers and the unsettled XVI were routed from the trenches, leaving the suburbs open to assault. The men of Old Home Bread could not pursue, however. Short on ammunition and with more wounded than able bodied, the company had to retreat, giving way to Chip Davis’ command but not before reporting meeting the forward elements of the XVIII Rifle Brigade TA. The XVIII had positioned themselves well the city buildings where it would be difficult for the cavalry to root them out.

The attack was murderous and all of Carthage mourned when neither Chip Davis nor the Steamroller Brigade returned. Spotters reported that the attack was not in vain however. Over 200 riflemen paid the price of the defense and no fresh Riflemen had rushed the city’s defense. Word quickly spread that Isabella had once more fled the advancing Carthaginian army, abandoning the city and her people.

The Convoy Company was the next available unit for battle. The XVIII Brigade tried to hold the suburban strong point but it quickly folded. With Isabella’s retreat the fighting elements of the city were losing heart. The Convoy Company hadn’t suffered a single wound. The tables were turning.

The veterans of We Are the Champions exploited the sudden opening with the intensions of overrunning the XXIII Brigade but instead ran into the XI Volunteer Rifle Brigade FDOT. The skirmish turned into a full battle but the city defenses were already crumbling and the XI Volunteers had no support. The Champions routed them from their positions after suffering comparable wounds but refusing to retreat. This left the city and the XXXIII vulnerable. For their efforts the Champions were given the recognition of an elite band.

The Boys Named Sue followed the Champions and struck the wounded, outnumbered XXXIII but once more the hardened veterans proved themselves far more and were supported by an additional 100 rifles, cutting down the Sues without suffering any further loss themselves. The Carthaginian command now considered an elite band and thus was indentified as a high priority target. The Dandelions followed into the meat grinder.

Finally there was success and the XXXIII Brigade was crushed. With them, the city was destroyed as well. For their service the Dandelions were recognized as an elite band.

Seville was destroyed and its citizens forced into the Spanish33-37 slaves. Murcia was now the capital and it was already under bombardment. All of the remaining identified Spanish rifle brigades were rated at ‘regular’ or ‘conscript’ strength. Spain was now bleeding out its life blood.

Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry picked off the VII Volunteer Longbows Brigade FDOT in the field. Toxic’s 9th Cavalry was tasked with the destruction of the II Longbow Brigade TA. To the great surprise of everyone, the II Longbows scrambled to high ground where the cavalrymen could not reach them. Though the longbows posed little danger, the crafty II Longbows began an avalanche that consumed the entire Toxic 9th. Not a single man survived. The cavalry of Wolf Creek Pass followed the attack and also followed the Toxic 9th into oblivion. It was only speculation as to what happened to them for none of them were ever seen again. What the heck, it was a longbow! Hannibal lost half of his cavalry in those stupid attacks!

Looking good!
I agree. Excellent job so far.

Of course, the God of the Sea has a new command for Hannibal (if this doesn't contradict other orders):

The Sparthaginian Navy has long been the power of the seas. However, the time to dominate the seas has ended. Any nations that send ships to sea desecrate the holy territory of Sparthage and must die for their offenses against the Gods of Carthage and their chosen people. All foreign ships discovered outside their home ports are to be destroyed as soon as possible. If the offending ship returns to its home port, the Carthaginian military must do everything possible to strike down those who offend the Gods.
