I can't start a religion with my Prophet?

It's 650 ad, I've just gotten a free great Prophet for building something or other.

It has no 'start a religion' button - the only thing I can do is 'build a holy site'.

What am I missing here ?

The world probably reached the maximum number of religions.

There are only a limited number of religions that can be founded, and they've all gone.

On a standard map I think the limit is 6 religions.

I have 800 hours with this game and I have never seen a game where I couldn't start a religion.

Weird.

Go to the religion overview area and you'll see which religions have been started and a message about none available.

That would explain why you might never have encountered this before! At Prince, it is pretty rare for the player not to found if you try at all.

It sounds like you built Hagia Sophia after all the religions had been taken already.
