I love battleships

if you beeline for SV, you get battleship and later on x-com..so domination vic is not that difficult i guess.

i find it fun to play as shaka and get as many xp increasing policies/ideological tenants/buildings as possible. if you have all the normal buildings plus brandenburg, plus the right authoriarian policies, you can get 4 range, double fire battleships straight out the gate. thats pretty fun.

I'd like battleships a whole lot better if they could be upgraded to missile cruisers. They are awesome until you tech past them and can build missile cruisers, nuclear subs, bombers, etc. Then you can't carry over all the experience the battleships have built up into missile cruisers, which sucks.

also love battleships. they are so awesome, and have been for awhile. I really like when you have a city that is on the water, but also has a little lake on the other side. that battleship can then defend your base pretty darn well.

but with the cpu and Navy, really you just need submarines. they struggle with submarines early in the game, and you can get a big upper hand by just cutting the heart out of their raiding party with a couple subs.

my ideal army is to simply have a bunch of battleships, subs, a GG, GA, and 2 destroyers. once you get to that point, the CPU cannot keep up imo on sea.

odd that none of you have seemed to encounter an enemy coastal city with GWB's or beyond. when they have have extra line of sight due to a nearby allied CS or a unit that you can't see, they bomb the BS pretty consistently. not that this insta-pops the ship, yet the damage it takes if far away from friendly waters takes a long time to heal.

for the most part though they certainly rock against enemies with no bombers.

Yes that spoils the fun a bit! Once the AI has flight they are vulnerable, hence the clamour that they should upgrade to missile cruisers - and I totally agree.

What you guys think?

The only reason B-ships are so dominant is the AI can't handle them. Submarines eat them for breakfast. It's rock-scissor-papers so yeah, when you have the AI remove subs from the equation of course they're going to rock. Balance looks much better against the other ships when you include a thinking opponent.

And the best part about Civ5 Battleships.....

They don't die to Spearmen fortified in a city.

That might be related to battleships not being able to capture cities. Now a city with english longbow, artillery, any aircraft, sub, and/or battleship garrisoned in it CAN hurt your battleship while it attacks.

For frigates/Battleship I go for range +1 ... AI has no idea how to defend on this. Move in one unit to view the city. Bom away. Move the unit back.. I have seen a few times that the IA has a big army on the back but does not move it does not see you !?!? You take out those cities one by one..... very powerfull... acctualy over powered.

Odd thing happened to mine in current game - they stopped earning experience. Mind you they were fully promoted, but after 1000 xp they stopped registering xp. Hardly a problem, just curious.

I think it`s time for me to try a higher difficulty.

I was going to say the same thing. I too love me some Battleships and pretty much do what you do when I can. But if you are steamrolling over and over with the same strat, it may be time to go up a level.

You can do the same thing on Emperor it just isn't as easy.

I love this thread...its like real life 70 years ago. Everyone loved battleships then - they were the pride and prestige of a nation wrought in iron. Steel castles ruling the waves. Tremendously romantic and all that. I love battleships as well for their beauty, grace and sheer devastating firepower.

But - essentially they are obsolete. There's a reason no one built one after 1943 (I think...)

If you come up against a carrier group commanded by a player (I.e. 2 or more carriers loaded with bombers and fighters surrounded by destroyers) then you can kiss your battleships goodbye.

They are good for coastal fire support and for escorting carriers (along with destroyers to sink subs) like in real life - but this being their only use was a sad and inglorious end for such big (and expensive!) capital ships...

they are super nice, unfortunately, naval warfare is where the AI in this game really struggles. So battleships being as good as they are, coupled with poor naval AI makes for a very easy naval victory "build huge Navy".

i recently played on Emperor and ended up teching battleships/frigates almost 30 turns before I saw a SINGLE AI SUBMARINE. I wasn't even close to top of the tech list...

needless to say i easily dominated the waters. kinda got boring not having to worry about anyone touching my navy. as fun as Navy is, its also the AI biggest weakness

You know, my favorite thing to do is to go out and hunt AI navies. One problem with that though: AI always has a small scout navy. I'm basically more likely to come across barb fleets. I think the biggest AI fleet I've ever seen was about a dozen ships guarding an island capital, mostly triremes and a few galleass. It's a real letdown when you crush their couple ships and then annihilate their coastal cities with no retaliation whatsoever from their army, and they almost never try to build more ships during the war. Once you get battleships, it's over for the AI.

Why wait for the battleships? Start with frigates first, upgrade to battleships with the left overs ;)
