Insufficient video memory allocation error

I am getting the error with my setup. I have an AMD 5600 X2, 2 gigs of dual channel ram, and an 8800GTS with 512 megs of memory. I have the newest nvidia drivers. So it appears that it is not limited to ATI cards. I am hoping to find a solution.

sorry for the delay in posting but here are my results:

 I should have told you: you can attach files by clicking on go advanced and then on manage attachments

anyway:
you might want to get the win xp service pack 3
also: your graphics card driver is :old: - this one is 3 years younger:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp

disclaimer: I did check that this driver is for your card - but you need to check this yourself :)

thats annoying because i have used the windows tools to try and update all my drivers and they say no updates. all the drivers are 3+ years old and it doesnt make sense to me. is there something else that i can do to get updates for all my drivers without having to pay for them?

use the display drivers only version - you should not be forced to pay for them - they should be free :) if you have any more questions post :)
as for the windows tools: I am not fond of them... Unfortunately you usually need to look for new drivers manually...

I have experienced this error too, and I have a Nvidia card (a GeForce FX 59900XT).

The error only occurs in native resolution (1680x1050) and never in one of the standard resolutions (I've resorted to running in 1280x1024 in windowed mode).

It would seem to me the game isn't properly coded to handle larger resolutions than the standard (VGA-derivative) ones.

I do take screenshots, so the error could be related to shuffling unexpectedly large video buffers - the card itself shouldn't be a limitation, however: it's got 128 MB on-board memory.

Just so you don't think it's a ATI-only issue...

And yes, I updated to the latest drivers only a few months ago, with no change.

I had this notorious error for ages.

You can try some temporary fixes:

In the CivilizationIV.ini file:

; Don't show a warning when a video memory allocation fails
HideOutOfVRamWarning = 1

Set that to 0. When the image gets deteriorated save and reload.

Setting "AutoSaveInterval = 1" is also a good thing in this situation.

Wiping out new drivers with Driver Cleaner and installing the old ones that came on CDs with my computer worked for me. The new version of the program isn't free, maybe the older free one will work for you: Driver Cleaner Professional 1.5

I have a RadeonX600 with 128 MB on a nForce4 motherboard. I think the problem was in a wrong chipset/graphics card driver combination, but I'm not really sure what was the problem.

Good luck!

Ive got exactly the same problem, I run warlords 1.61 on my system Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz, 2GB ram, Geforce 8800GT. Ive noticed that the memory usage creeps from 80% (when i start the game) to 94% when i get the error message, and the game crashes. Could there be a memory leak somewhere?

This error only appears when i run huge maps, with many civs...

I have been playing Civ4 with Warlords and BTS for a long time now. I have patched everything. I have been playing these on my laptop. When did BTS come out? I don't know, but I've been playing it since then. And I would patch the thing whenever one came out, so I am up-to-date, and I have had very few problems playing on my laptop.

Less than a month ago I started get this memory allocation problem - out of nowhere! It seems like, from reading the posts on this thread, that you guys have witnessed this problem from the get-go. (Since installation or during.) How did I all of a sudden start getting this problem, and why the living heck doesn't Take2 or Firaxis (or whomever) fix this?!?!

Anyway, my game is inoperable now. I used to be able to do the Huge maps and whatnot, but those days are apparently now over. I tried doing Tiny maps, but the problem would happen after enough development of my cities and me poking around on the mini-map frequently. What a big terd!

I am not going to uninstall the thing, try to find new drivers, or whatever. Clearly that doesn't work. Also, since the game worked fine up until now (years have gone by, eh?), I can only imagine that my old girl (the laptop) is either getting old and failing me or I did something stupid like updating my computer somewhere - as if updating Direct X, Adobe Reader, IE8, or whatnot affected the whole caboodle. I have 20% of my hard drive available, and my virtual memory setting remains where it has been at over 1 GB.

So what changed, Civ4 people? It can't be a conspiracy, can it? Where's the fix?

I started playing Civ4 a year ago and I think that it is a great game. It was one of the reasons I bought a new PC - my old machine had some problems with huge and sometimes with large maps.

I can say that on the new machine everything was much better. I turned up the graphics to max and I even downloaded a new graphic mod called Varietas Delectat to further improve my experience.
Then I started off on a huge map right away.

As I said everything was fine. There weren't any kind of issues like on my old machine, however after some time of playing I started getting these memory allocation errors and after each error my game crashed.

At first it bothered me, but after a while I got used to just starting the game again and loading the last auto-save.

However this morning when I wanted to load the last save, the game crashed when loading in the map and it still keeps on happening.

I keep several save files and I've discovered that I can load the older ones, however when I try my luck with the newer ones it crashes again.

I continued playing from the last save file I managed to load. After half hour the message showed up again, and the game crashed. I restarted, loaded the last auto-save and it crashed again on load.

I tried lowering my graphics to the minimum and updating my video driver. None of them seemed to help.

It seems that I can't continue playing after some point, just I don't see the reason why.

When I asked for details about the problem Windows gave me this:

It doesn't say to me much, but I hope that it can be useful for someone here.

I have Windows Vista 32 bit
My processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
My video card is ATI Radeon HD 4890 with 1 GB of memory and as I've mentioned above it has the most recent driver available.

If anyone can find out what might cause the problem, I'd be really grateful!

The problem can be with my new machine or the Varietas Delectat mod either. It is my first game with both.

Oh and I forgot one thing.

I played a game since this issue of mine started without the Varietas Delectat mod on a Duel size map - just to make it quick. I managed to finnish that game sometimes in the 19th century and I did not experience any crashes. This could have been however due to the low memory need for a duel sized map.

Ori think I "fixed" MAF w/ new MoBo & chip (Santa on his way via UPS)
Gigabyte MoBo w/ AMD Athlon II x2 245 Dual Core 2.9Ghz
2G DDR2 800Mhz

Still having problems under my old system
AMD 1.6 2Gb Ram GeForce 6200 512MB

Since June (using old computer) have played numerous games with latest version and with Bat and Bug Mods and Blue Marble. Played Huge map pangaea world, Prince level, normal speed and would win in 1950's, with only an occasional MAF but no other problems except slow (1 - 1.5 min) wait for next turn. Played full screen; mid resolution

Last week did a complete reinstall of Civ4 from disc, updated to 3.1.9.0, added Bat mod 2.1 and deleted VD 8.0 and replaced with VD7.5 All computer drivers are current OS is WIN XP Pro SP3

Now trying to play with screen resolution @ 1024x768 in windows mode, low res textures; graphics level low, BTS 3.1.9.0; Bat 2.1; Blue Marble; Bug 4.2; VD 7.5 deleted ; Pangaea, Large, German, Prince, Normal

As 4000 BC turn appears auto saves and screen shows
"Bug Core - creating uninitilized ACO
Bug Core - creating uninitilized Auto Save;
Bug Core - creating uninitilized Hover;
Bug Core - creating uninitilized Map Finder"

and one more that I can't remember then message dissolves and game starts.

Mouse is freezing up a lot and basically play is not manageable. Have I solved my own problems by upgrading mobo and chip or do I have a corrupt download, trolls under the bridge, or murphy over my shoulder

I'm addicted to BTS and want my game back. Thanks for the help

Marsfire

"Started with Civ 1 and waiting for Civ 5"

did a complete reinstall of BTS (wiped out everything first) solved problem
starting new game - wait on Santa - by then will be up to higher demands of the game and will see if anything bad happens. Merry Christmas

Update:

All issues I described above stopped when I went back to standard BTS 1.19 and seized playing with the Varietas Delectat mod. I've just managed to play through the game on a Huge sized map and finished in the 15th century. I assume the memory problems would have shown themselves so far in the game. If they turn up again I'll post it here nonetheless. I hope I won't.

But so far it seems that Varietas Delectat was causing the trouble.
