Yea he's my most admired historical figure! To add to what NKVD said on his pilgrimage to Mecca he was so giving with his gold and was buying so much that he caused inflation in Cairo soley because of his presence there.

It's also theorized that his pilgrimage to Mecca was such an influx of gold to trading partners for Italy that he's credited as an inadvertent cause of the Renaissance.
