The Barrier Reef Scenario

Start in 3960 BC
Your tribe: Romans
Difficulty: KING Level

1. You're on your own continent / island.
2. You'll have MUCH time to grow...
3. (But) watch out: Your other 6 opponent tribes don't sleep.

I can't wait to read your stories. ;)

.

.

Details:
i did use
CIV1 version 474.05 for creating an island world,
TERRAFORM 2.0.56 to re-draw / change the map,
and
CivEd version 1.4 for changing the tribe
and
afterwards
TERRAFORM (again) to correct things CivEd did confuse with the tribe change.

i did test / play the game up to 1750 AD
and it works fine (no crashes).

At 1660 AD right now...

I have just built the Apollo program and I see everyone, going to build a huge fleet of bombers now and some carriers and an army of armors and riflemen and invade the islands one by one, only problem is that they're too far away.

Done.

The Roman tribes are exploring their island, finding it small in size. They start to develop ships and with their fragile little ships they finally reach a shore. Unfortunately the new land only exists out of high mountains. The first desperate colonists settle. At that moment it seemed hopeless, later on it became the key to strategic victory.
In the meanwhile other explorers sail out and encounter enemy boats, which wave cyan and pink flags. Their signals seemed to be a hostile sign. Without any real reason, big naval battles occur, showing the Roman empire to improve its naval forces, which by that time were non-existing anymore.
The need for adventure coarses through the veins of the Roman people and one ship of such adventurers landed on a shore, which wasn't mountain covered. There they encountered the Germans. These gentle people were masters in art and philosophy and didn't know the weapons the Roman people had to survive. The Romans used this to their advantage and captured the whole German island.
With that succes, the Romans felt that they should explore more. Using strategic settlements they built in the mountains, they could cross the reefs with their still primitive boats. Suddenly enormous frigates with yellow flags attack the proud Romans. Survivors came on a new shore and found the carriers of the yellow banners of death, namely the Egyptians. The Egyptians were more knowledgable in every aspect of civilization. They granted a short peace to study the Roman adventurers and drew the same conclusion. It was war.
The Roman soldiers from the German isles assembled and sailed through the mountain settlements to Egypt. In the mountains they encountered a lost band of Babylonian Barbarians. They demanded outrageous tributes and when the Romans refused, the Babylonians improved the Roman ranks by untactical attacks. This last until the end of time.
Egypt proved to be a strong enemy, but their knights couldn't beat the surplus of Roman troops. After capturing a small shore village, Thebes was near. Since this would disrupt the Egypt fist of rule, all the Roman troops sieged the city and by luck were able to capture it. Egypt crumbled.
Afraid by the advanced ships of war, the Romans see sailing by of unknown tribes, their attitude changes... drastically. Around 1000AD they overthrew their despotism to become Democratic.....
They went south and encountered a far better enemy than they've ever faced.... the Americans. Abe the terrible, who was also enlightened by Democracy, like the Roman people wanted war. Unable to get on their land, the Romans developed themselves, until they discovered space flight. They were able to stop the Americans from participating in the space race by buying two of their cities. Indiginous peoples seem pretty corruptable.
And thus the Romans were the first people who reached Alpha Centauri in 1830AD (so game ended in 1832AD).

What an anti-climax... (sorry for the story, but I felt like writing it in this style.) ;-)

What files should I post? (save files + replay file?)

Here's a preview of my island

Narrative to follow, this is my island at the end. I took the despot search and destroy approach.

2007 Barrier Reef Scenario
You're on your own continent / island

Given those clues I knew I needed to get on the water fast

4000 BC: ROMANS FOUND THE CITY OF ROME 1
3960 BC: ROMANS PRODUCE FIRST MILITIA

First thing a militia to explore my island, caution to the wind

My second city
3160 BC: ROMANS FOUND THE CITY OF CAESAREA 2
3040 BC: Americans discover MapMaking
2880 BC: ROMANS FOUND THE CITY OF CARTHAGE 3

2760 BC: ROMANS PRODUCE FIRST TRIREME
Now for a little look about. Took the militia with the trireme put it on a reef and sailed the other way looking for some other civilization. Found some irrigation on a island to the west. I’m going to come back when I get sail & catapults.

2580 BC: ROMANS FOUND THE CITY OF NICOPOLIS 4

1760 BC: ROMANS PRODUCE FIRST CATAPULT
1540 BC: ROMANS PRODUCE FIRST SAIL

Now I have become dangerous to others.

1520 BC: ROMANS FOUND THE CITY OF BYZANTIUM 5

I produced 5 cities, temples, barracks, and granaries. I built only sails, catapults towards the end a couple of chariots

1420 BC: ROMANS DISCOVER RELIGION
I went for this because I planed to stick with despotism and sooner or later unhappiness needs to be quelled

1380 BC: Romans make peace with Germans

Germans on the island to the west get visitors. I didn't attack right away as I wanted to get another load of catapults

1180 BC: ROMANS PRODUCE FIRST DIPLOMAT
My one and only diplomat I thought maybe the Germans had more advances than cities. Thought I would steal one.

1160 BC: Romans declare war on Germans

380 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE BOMBAY
380 BC: Indian civilization destroyed by Romans

DELHI had a bonus for me Hanging Gardens
After this discovery I went to 100 per cent tax as I had all the advances I needed. Somewhere the Greeks had the Lighthouse and I didn't want Magnetism to knock it out, or invention to do the same to the Hanging Gardens.

140 BC: Romans make peace with Egyptians
120 BC: Romans declare war on Egyptians
120 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE MEMPHIS
100 BC: Romans make peace with Egyptians
80 BC: Romans declare war on Egyptians
80 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE ORYX
80 BC: Romans make peace with Egyptians
80 BC: Romans declare war on Egyptians
40 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE THEBES

After the Egyptians a passing sail found the Aztecs and disembarked a catapult into their city how convenient
40 BC: Aztecs found the city of Tenochtitlan
20 BC: Tenochtitlan destroyed
20 BC: Aztec civilization destroyed by Romans

By the year one I had 26 catapults and 5 sail

80 AD: Romans make peace with Americans
80 AD: Romans declare war on Americans
100 AD: Romans make peace with French
100 AD: Americans make peace with Greeks

In quick succession I ran into Americans, French, and the Greeks.

120 AD: ROMANS CAPTURE WASHINGTON
120 AD: ROMANS CAPTURE PARIS

The Americans were the most difficult. They had 19 phalanxes.

380 AD: Romans make peace with Babylonians
400 AD: Romans declare war on Babylonians
440 AD: ROMANS CAPTURE BABYLON
500 AD: ROMANS CAPTURE SUMER
500 AD: Romans make peace with Babylonians
500 AD: Romans declare war on Babylonians
540 AD: Uruk destroyed
540 AD: Babylonian civilization destroyed by Romans

Funny thing I couldn't find the Mongols on any of the islands. Sailing around bumped into a settler of theirs on a trek in the artic.
Overall I lost 33 catapults. It was a fairly quick game. Once I had a production going it was mostly the logistical problem of getting the catapults to their destination

Don't you hate it when you are classified as a barbarian

The pink is the bomber route, I have 6 or 7 stationed in the carrier. The battleship protects the transport. The problem is the last time I brought a transport with 7 mech. inf, artillery and armor through that red route, it got destroyed by a fighter. I'm probably going to need another battleship. Also I have lost about 8 bombers trying to bomb Babylon. I need to get a Mech. Inf fortified on that hill with the artillery on it so the fighters from Babylon can't waste me.

I'd be happy to see your graphs

*grumble*
... (now) i think it would have been a better idea
to take the GREEK as 'your tribe' at KING level here
to force the human player into a two/three city scientific race (first)...?

Quickly colonized the whole native island (total 6 cities). In 2500 B.C. my triremes encountered the Germans; by 2200 B.C. got a peace treaty with them. Done some colonization of the German island (total +3 cities). In 1240-1120 B.C. had the first war with the Germans (result - capture of Leipzig by Roman armies). During that time managed to sign peace treaties with the Egyptians, Greeks and Americans.

By that moment I already had a nice army of Catapults hosted on Frigates, so I didn't waste time not using them :). Near 800 B.C. launched a two-front war - both with the Germans and the Americans. Meanwhile, colonized the Greek and American islands. In 480 B.C. ended the second war with the Germans (occupied all their cities except for the capital of Berlin, which was well-defended). In 360 B.C. finally seized Berlin and eliminated the Germans. By 40 A.D. ended the lengthy war with Americans by invading Boston, their last city.

In 120 A.D. I began to build some kind of "sluice"-cities at the rock ridges, which separated islands of different nations from each other. Those cities significantly speeded up the transportation of military forces to enemies. In order for those cities to survive, they had to be founded near the "fish"-squares. For some reason the Babylonians (the most developed AI nation in the game) and the Indians all the time disembarked their armies at the rock ridges, so the "sluice"-cities were periodically destroyed and I had to build new ones at the same locations. Later I defended those cities with Ironclads and (in the very end) Battleships.

In 180 A.D. declared a war on Egypt. In 380 A.D. invaded the Greek island (though already had a colony there) with Catapults and quickly conquered the isolated and poorly developed Greece. By 1140 A.D. the prosperous Egypt also became the part of the Roman Empire.

In the 15th century started the invasion of the heavily-defended Babylonian island. Babylonians were even technologically superior to me - they already had Cannons and Rifleman, while I still used Catapults and Musketeers. The invasion was not an easy one; some landing groups were completely wiped out just after their debarkation. But after capturing first Babylonian cities I got their military technologies, so the result of the war had become determined. In 1625 A.D. the ferocious Babylon was destroyed.

After defeating the main forces of Babylonians I, at least, managed to re-group my forces and attack the impudent Indians. After invading their island from the south in 1600 A.D. I quickly captured all their cities due to their technological inferiority. I only used two groups of Cannons brought by two Transports. In 1685 A.D., shortly after the fall of Babylon, their Indian grovellers followed them into the darkness of history.

Congrats GoldBerg!! This game is great!! Would it be possible to play it in Emperor? in King? What level is the game?

I's been real fun, i shall post my results when i finish it!!

I am loving this module, the only problem being the AI too weak...thanks again Goldberg, and good job!!

Hey Screech, tell us a bit how the game was! Did you go for Despotic Conquest? The other CIVs are far away!!
:goodjob:

Good job wiinnig it so soon...i will end later cause i want to get to ALPHA

Yes I went the Despotic Conquest route. The 1st time around was more of a walkthrough to get a feel for the map. The 2nd time I lost 12 chariots in a row to a walled Thebes, got pissed, and started over (but learning a couple things in how to play this map). The 3rd time is what I submitted. All 3 tries took me about 3 hours combined to complete. In hindsight, there is 1 thing I would've done differently, which I will touch on at the end.

My 1st order of business was to settle the island. I made sure to utilize every non-hill/mountain square. I had Caesarea and Byzantium produce settlers for roads and land improvements, since those cities had access to the oasis's. The Roman flag has been carried to all corners of the continent!

2380 BC: ROMANS PRODUCE FIRST SAIL

Each city built barracks, and then pumped out chariots. Once Navigation was discovered, I started building sails. Caesarea became my designated naval producing city. For the entire game all Caesarea did was produce sails and frigates. One day the sun will never set on the Roman Empire!

Next victims: Egyptians. I sent 2 sails south, wrapping around the southwestern mountain cape, and invaded the Egyptian island. They were no match for my armies. I also began settling the former German island. And I now had the capability to produce frigates. I will enjoy seeing the terror in the fearful eyes of the people when Roman armies spill onto their lands in packs of not 3, but 4!

1500 BC: Romans declare war on Greeks
1500 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE ATHENS
1500 BC: Greek civilization destroyed by Romans

Settlement of German isle complete. The Greeks thought they could hide in their nearby mountainous haven. They were wrong! While pillaging the land I discover a very sophisticated transportation system, far more advanced than the Greeks, or anyone else I've encountered, are capable. The remnants of an advanced ancient civilization, wiped out by plague perhaps?

All roads lead to Rome!

840 BC: American civilization destroyed by Romans

Settlement of the Egyptian isle is complete. Our encounter with the Americans would prove costly. Many chariots were lost while laying seige to Washington, as its citizens cowardly hid behind their city walls. But the inevitable came, and soon the American people were speaking Latin.

280 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE BABYLON
280 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE URUK
280 BC: Babylonian civilization destroyed by Romans

The fall of Babylon! I expected a difficult time with them, as Babylon was protected by a great wall. But it was meekly defended, by a single phalanx. They barely put up a fight. I also stumbled upon the Indians, and didn't even waste time making peace with them.

260 BC: Romans make peace with Indians
240 BC: Romans declare war on Indians
200 BC: ROMANS CAPTURE DELHI
200 BC: Romans make peace with Indians

I changed my mind. I needed to buy time for another frigate of chariots to land on the Indian isle.

0 AD: ROMANS: 23 CITIES; 3,800,000 POPULATION
0 AD: ROMANS CAPTURE BANGALORE
0 AD: Indian civilization destroyed by Romans
0 AD: ROMANS CAPTURE DELHI
0 AD: Mongol civilization destroyed by Barbarians

The Indians and their peace-loving ways had no chance against the Roman onslaught. The people of Delhi began to question their King, and so they were set straight. The Mongols were found having snowball fights on nearby mountain tops. Our chariots simply yelled "Hail Caesar!", and the Mongols were engulfed by an avalanche.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Because of the isolation of the islands due to the mountainous arms, defense of my island was not a concern. Eventually 2 phalanx were built to keep people happy. I had every city producing chariots. Rather than make all the sails and frigates travel the globe, I used them as shuttles - I would carry armies from an island to a mountain range, and they would be picked up on the other side by another naval unit. This made for much more efficient conquering.

The 1 thing I would've done different is build Magellan. I continued discoveries beyond Magnetism, which was really unnecessary. I should've changed to 100% tax after that, and bought Magellan as soon as possible. Then switch to 100% luxury. Monies obtained from city captures were enough to sustain my barracks and temples. I probably could've finished maybe 10 turns sooner.

The reason I didn't do that is because I had the mindset that Bridge Building and Railroad would be great to have. But in Despotic Conquest, they aren't really needed. I needed to remind myself why:

Bridge Building is good for 2 reasons - keeping your cities interconnected, and to build railroad. Unless there are constant enemy landings (where the ability to shuffle armies around could be the difference between holding and losing a city), there's no need to interconnect. And in D.C., You usually don't get to benefit much from Railroad because you finish the game so early. Sometimes we need to be reminded of basic things from time to time.

I won't play again just to get Magellan. I may play again to try and win via Ostrich though. We'll see.

Great story Screech!!! I will do the same as you, paste the replay and make comments. I am in democracy now (swapped from republic) and at 1450 BC we have computers and the SETI program.

Maybe when i finish the game, i shall repeat with Despotic Conquest, i have never played this mode.

Hail to Roman Screech!!!
:goodjob:

I meant AD, sorry :D This night i shall send the shuttle and post game results, files and txt (with comments)

I have really enjoyed this GoldBerg's game because the map is so particular and rare.
Thanks Gold :D

I maybe will try to beat Screech then in the Despotic conquest mode...

Screech, would you mind "repeat" and try to launch the spaceship in a better date than mine? that would be nice :D
