It's optional but the game will be all quiet and you'll receive errormessages in the logs -that shouldn't effect the playability though.

even though iam getting the error messages because of missing sound files
I just noticed a few things:
1) I created a shortcut for this mod to be automatically loaded and when i tried to open that shortcut it takes about 2-4 minutes for the loadscreen to show up(where it is showing the XML files being loaded), is this normal or is it just happening to me? I only have the minimum requirements so that migh be on of the reasons.
2) some of the icons for the civilopedia are just green boxes. Is this normal or do I have corrupted files?

This is still a very very early beta so that pink/green boxes is simply because of missing artfiles. The long loadingtime is due to the large artfolder civ has to load(you can reduce loadingtimes by following Kaels tutorial about how to reduce loading times though

The next release will of course have already a packed artfolder to address this issue.
