Politics of Argentina, as of 1936
The Concordancia, a union of a mixture of Conservatives, Militarists and Nationalists, currently control the government of Argentina ever since the Coup of '30. José Félix Uriburu, a reformer who died of stomach cancer in 1932. Agustín Pedro Justo took power in the 1932 elections, facing not only the Great Depression but also allegations of electoral fraud (against radicals) and various minor coups that lasted until late 1933. By 1936 he had some outward support for blunting the deadfall of the depression, created a national bank to control the currency markets and have stabilized the country. However, he also nearly accepted The Roca-Runciman Treaty, which would have brought Argentina to below the status of a British Dominion and he has crushed various reformers, calling them 'Radical.' It is in the midst of this tension between the Concordancia and various Reform groups of various intensity that mark the 1938 election.

Roberto María Ortiz was being groomed as the government's, the Concordancia's, candidate. It was known that he was a moderate reformer within the ranks of the conservative Concordancia. As of 1936, many wonder if the concordancia's new lenient approach to reform was influenced by his leadership as the Treasury Minister. Some Argentinians say that he is popular enough to win by "Patriotic Fraud" (Supposedly to prevent Radicals from retaking argentina), but others truly believe in his reformist policies will bring a greater democratic participation in the government.
