Many leaders Game 6 Emperor Spaceman

lets stick with 40 turns please. Pigswill have you got a save close to 1300 so I can have consistent statistics ??

Ralph: the closest save I've got is 1340.

Heh thats close enough (its just about the same as playing an extra turn which we all do occasionally!!)

Darius - Round 4

Spoiler :

My overall plan was more expansion while being very nice to my best mates Bizzy and Qin. i can't see any planned warfare on the horizon unless one of the as yet unmet AI takes an instant dislike to me. i will not make my usual mistake of neglecting my military though, so there will be a slow build up of units.

This report won't be long or detailed because the majority of the turns were just an excercise in mouse button pushing.

the expansion continued with five more cities being added to my burgeoning empire, ( i missed the screenie for one)

1000AD and at last another civ turned up, Joao, guess him turning up in a nice carrack wasn't a surprise

he seems to be way ahead in techs but not in score, i am nor overly concerned as i plan to have a 16 or 17 city empire which when developed will hopefully far outstrip the AI in teching

Johannes Kepler was born in Pasagardae in 1010AD, no surprise that i used him to build an Academy.

The only bit of warfare saw the barb city of Hsung-Nu razed in 1190AD.

Bizzy built the AP in 1240AD, It now becomes very important that i spread hinduism to all my cities, i need to be president to stop any unplanned wars.

a few stats for everyone to look at.

Round 5 Plans,

a) spread both confuscinism and hinduism, the first for money the second for influence.

b) One possibly two more cities

c) Liberalism slingshot to claim.... i don't know actually

d) More military.

Plan:
Spoiler :
Plan: train units and check regularly for WHEOOH, settle filler sites, build tech infra for the transition from Thief to Conventional Economy.

Report:
Spoiler :

China duly detonates the Artist bomb in Chengdu, severely cramping Seattle and denying it a hill to work. It could have been worse because I simply assign REP boosted Specialists once I’m out of the Anarchy caused by adopting BUR. I trade Compass and Music to Bismarck for Feudalism.

I get another GE in 840. Heh: looks like I’ll be founding Mining Corp with one of these fellows. HBR is learnt and Drama is stolen. China is running out of worthwhile techs to steal… I found a couple more cities.

Get 124 beakers towards Philo: I’m trying for a Liberalism sling, though Joao is well ahead of me at present. Even if I don’t make it, I want to adopt FR for the extra beakers and Unis are very welcome, too. I found Detroit in 100AD and Huang gets a GE the same turn, burning him on Sistene. I steal Machinery on the next turn, having just lost an unidentified Spy the previous turn. Trade Machinery to Bis for 380g seeing as he’s about to complete it on his own.

I get a GS for an Academy in Washington (1050), pull a couple of minor trades, and duly lose the Liberalism race to Joao in 1100 (he takes Astro). Interestingly, a Great General is BIFAL in 1090: looks like the other continent is aflame with war (of a religious nature, I would assume).

I’m looking well set here: the soldiers is still a concern, but I’m working on it. Education is learnt in 1120, and I remember than I can sell stuff to Portugal, so Fish go for 8gpt. Nice. Nationalism is completed in 1190, so I trade it to Joao for Lib and some gold. I burn one of my three GEs on Taj. This gives me a righteous boost. Unlike this:

Arses. My forces are up by the Chinese border and Bizzy has a stack wandering in my lands. I close borders, and try to delay war by demanding furs (to no avail). Banking is traded in from China, so I switch to FR and Merc (good synergy with REP and denying Joao trade routes). My axe in Houston gets upgraded to a Mace, but it still looks vulnerable in the extreme. PP completed in 1240, Gunpowder started.

We’ll see whose time it to die, Squeaky. Some units get whipped and I beg some cash off J for an upgrade in LA.

Luckily for me, Houston is ignored by the German stack which instead targets Atlanta, home of SoZ. A GG is born in 1260, after I’ve slaughtered some German units for acceptable losses, and is sent to SanFran to become an instructor. Woo for Great Wall!

Gunpowder completed in 1270, and I get Huang into BUR for favourite civic bonuses the next turn. I make a complete arse of attacking Hannover, losing umpteen units: on the plus side, they were mainly axes, so every cloud has a silver lining. It gets razed in 1280, and on the same turn another GS is born and is merged into DC.

A second German stack is slaughtered outside LA, birthing another GG, who will be attacked to a Knight as a super medic.

In 1300, I bribe China into the war for Gunpowder, which removes any chance of a dogpile on me, and ruins Sino-German relations long term. The MMS with China will be handy for me, too.

Outlook:
Spoiler :

Very good. From memory, there were several GGs BIFAL, so if the AI is warring, it won't be teching so well. I have a huge empire that I plan to increase with a Germany city or two. Assuming I have Alu and can found Mining Inc, then my main danger is a Chinese CV. However, I can keep a close eye on him and destroy him if needed.

Emperor Justinian I., round 4 (800 AD - 1300 AD): I just don't like you...

Spoiler :

Well, I know why Emperor is way above my skills. During these turns I got more and more the feeling that the AI is on turbo-boost now and leaving my sniffing their dust. But all in due order. My goal was to go all military this set and build up an army. And I didn't need that reminder...

Nice prospects for a violent landgrab. I sent a Settler east to look for unclaimed spots, but Biz is just about everywhere. So I had to settle this spot...

Met the 3rd AI. I always hate when that Music plays and I see this oversized hat...

Got a GSpy which i settled.

I was hoping for Liberalism, but at 1210 AD...

I wasn't even close to it. The reason is...

...that my GNP is below average and I have a monster AI. He has more then 4 times my GNP ! I guess it's Joao as he is a Rexxer and already researching SciMeth by now. I have an army now, but Qin and Biz are still almost twice as powerful. Next turnset will be decisive. I'm gonna attack, as it is the only chance.

Spoiler :
Well after the ruined expansion plans of last time, its time for more expansion. Plans for this set are to get 4 more cities up. Research wise I' 5 away from CS and then want to head straight for Optics to meet the neighbours. Machinery is on the way, so I'll try and upgrade my army to maces and build a few more with some elephants. I need to keep an eye on my neighbours as well.

Let's go.

First turn in I get a GE. There are no wonders that I want at the moment, think hard about it and leave him for the moment. I may bulb him for Machinery later.

Thapsus founded.

Sicca founded.

I convert to Taoism as it spreads to my lands, it also gets Qin back to pleased. I then bribe Bismark in Taosim as well.

Bismark and Qin start a war :goodjob:

Meet Joao. He is much more advanced than me

I pop another GE. Still no wonders so use it to bulb Engineering. I then think hard about the second. Can use it to bulb Guilds (which Joao has), which would mean delaying Education (which I'm going to have to hand research as I was counting on a GS). Decide to leave it and go for Liberalism.

Now that's a barb city.

Another of my own

Meet Vicky. Also more advanced.

Deal Music and Optics to her for Philosophy, which ain't the greatest but I need Philosophy for Liberalism. I get some cash and world map which makes it more bearable. The map shows Russian and a huge Indian empire.

I must have missed Liberalism going. Damn! Check the log 1170AD it went. No way am I winning this methinks.

The Russian is Cathy and she sucks at this game. I sell her CoL for cash. It must be the Indians who rule the game.

Anyway, that's 1300AD. We have a runaway civ and I'm still 2-3 techs away from the others on that continent (Joao and Vicky with Guilds, Gunpowder and Astronomy).

My immediate goal is to get Nationalism first and use the second GE for Taj Mahal, hopefully a GA might pull back some slack.

I'm in a pretty big hole here. Not unwinnable but will depend how far in front the Indian is, which we'll find out next time.

Research: Civil Service, Compass, Feudalism (trade), Monotheism (trade), Machinery, Horseback Riding (trade), Optics, Paper, Engineering, Philosophy (trade), Education

Charlemagne, Episode 4? The Age of Exploration! (if i'm advanced enough :p)

Spoiler :

This set i'll try to get the cities i missed the last set while i work my economy.

start things off by whipping two rathuas.

look at this:

I got a lotta work ahead of me.

Great generel Born far away. must be a war at the other contenent.

Got an Event:

I'm 206 Beakers closer to MC

A hindu civ crowns a Hindu Pope and we get a Hindu Apolistic Palace.

Xian Captured by Barbarians.

Settle Strasbourg

Settle Lubeck

And Finally Brandenburg

Now for the IMPORTANT information of the set,

Meet Victoria, A kind girl who rules england, but she didn't do a good job of it... Why? The Portuguese are rulers of the English Apparently.

Now to Joao, a nice young lad who happens to rule this nation called "Portugal" apparently they wear big hats and have good guitar music in Portugal.

They are also, Much, Much, MUCH more advanced then me.
And on turn 36 i finally got optics. i start a caravel and hope to find more civs that are hopefully less advance then joao.

I notice we're Playing 40 turns,
Luckily i noticed that on the 40th turn,
To bad the action had to end,
but it was the 1300 and it was time for me,
To finish playing, but in the IBT,
what i have hoped for did not come true,
as i see that a distant civilization,
has discovered liberalism before me,

Gah, try to rhyme Civilization! and i lost Liberalism :gripe:

Goals for next round: Smash which ever civ discovered liberalism :wallbash: :gripe:
And train an Army, recover Research, tech to space discover the other civs you know...

The Plan
Couple more cities. Build an army. Beeline rifling.

The Reality
In her first act of the current regnum Elizabeth decreed the formation of a tract of land for her dalliance and delight, a vast woodland around the city of Sheffield Ivory to be called The New Forest. It was done.

In her second act Elizabeth laid the foundation stone of a new city on the mangroved west coast, to be called Jungle Glasgow ("And that's the last time I convene a committee to select a city name" whispered Elizabeth to her faithful companion Taj).

In the Year of 840 the Germans stumbled across Feudalism. Bismark had a testosterone rush viewing his archers' clothyards and immediately declared foul and treacherous war on the fair and noble people of Albion. It must be said that Albion was not fully prepared for such a vile and despicable act, companies of axemen and spearmen were pressed into service and rushed to the front, batteries of catapults were literally chopped into existence.

Had Bismark the organisation to match his presumption then the future of Albion could indeed have been bleak. However he dallied for ages. Once our scholars had taught him the rudiments of philosophy Qin readily agreed to join our cause against Bismark.

Our companies slowly assembled at the New Forest and after a few skirmishes the main German army hove into view in 1180: 3 squadrons of elephants, 4 squadrons of horse archers, 2 troops of chariots and 9 batteries of catapults.

Our army was entrenched around the New Forest; barrages of rocks and arrow-sheaths darkened the sky, charges, counter charges and desperate defence, acts of heroism and base cowardice, in short a typical battle. When it was over the people of Albion mourned the loss of a company of axemen and full six batteries of catapults. The German army was however totally annihilated. That ended the New Forest Catfight. Great generals emerged from the midst of Albions forces. Soon after Bismark sued for immediate and unconditional peace.

Yet Elizabeth scarce even noticed. She had long since learned to mistrust humankind and had turned to a succession of canine companions for comfort. None however were as dear to her as Taj the retriever, her closest and truest friend. In the year of 1170 Taj died. Elizabeth was inconsolable and the whole nation went into mourning with her. The defeat of Bismark could not lift the national sorrow. Elizabeth consulted with the finest architects and artists of the land to design and construct a fitting memorial which began construction in Ivory Tower in 1180 which in the year of 1340 is finally near completion.

Yet life went on. The scientists of the Ivory Tower continued their researches; Liberalism (980), Nationalism (1000), Gunpowder(1090), Metal-casting (1130), Compass (trade), Machinery (1180), Printing Press (1210), feudalism (trade), Engineering(trade), Optics (1260), Guilds (1300) and Banking (trade) all marked Albion's evolution through the technological tree. Currently our scholars are in friendly competition with 'Other England', trying to unravel the mystery of 'economics'. Cities grew, buildings were constructed, farms and mines were established, cottages grew into villages.

Caravels were constructed and dispatched to sail around the world as our geometricians have irrefutable proof that the world is indeed a globe. Our sailors however have superstition to rely on and every day they expect to fall over the edge of the world. Who will be proven right? This will be answered very soon. However their voyages have already made contact with other peoples and even should they sail off the limitless precipice their endeavours would not have been in vain.

Qin showed a different aspect to his complex and inscrutable personality by personally organising the display of a large collection of erotic statuary 'The Terracota Amour' in the city of Kaifeng. The fame of this exhibition drew in the county people for leagues around even to the outskirts of Jungle Glasgow. Some of the townspeople started to murmer about joining the Chinese Empire. Clearly this 'culture bomb' could not be tolerated. A library was constructed, a theare is under construction. the city was renamed 'Westward Ho' to remind its denizens of the literary traditions of Albion. More prosaically a significant portion of the army was dispatched to maintain order and proper loyalty.

Spoiler :

The Future
Finish rifling beeline. Build redcoats. Wipe out Bismark. Tech path will decide on what the AIs are doing.

I read your report after posting mine and thought the same. Both positions are winneable but certainly aren't favourable. I'm currently concoting my plan to get back to the top here. I want to be peaceful as well.

Many apologies for my recent 'not being here-ness' - had a lot of stuff going on. Although it's kinda resolving itself now. So hope to settle down and play some catchup over the next few days.

Hope things are going well with everyone!

da thread

Well, i played a few extra turns, but the good thing is I’m able to run 100% science now . . .

Spoiler Part I :

So, we all know where we left off last round, right? The same place I’ve left almost every set in the MLG series ~ in a losing position! oh well ~

I loaded up the save to find that I’m still at war with Qin. Dang! I was hoping I was reading someone else’s reports in the thread.

Luckily that oh-so-important tech I’ve been waiting for came in:

What?! I don’t NEED courthouses because I lost a third of my empire! Shut up!

Meanwhile, Qin decided he still wasn’t done, even though I cleaned up the army he had outside Eridu:

Oh man ~ I got a good event that I thought might help me out:

Apparently it’s crazy-talk.

The newest neighbor I met didn’t want to help either:

His nails are much nicer

:sigh:

At least my tech rate is good:

China still has not let up either:

And then:

Cripes! I hate, I hate, I HATE the MLG series!!

Spoiler Part II :

Well, what went wrong this time around? Well, to start, this was my first game on Emperor. Second, I tried to run a gambit strategy that I’d never tried before and go Pottery first. Finally, I weeded the capital city site, too, but . . .

@pholk:

Spoiler :
This seems to become a tradition of your's. At least those 2 hrs 42 mins were well spent :goodjob: . Call me loudmouth though - I'll taste your fate soon enough too I fear...

Well we have enough saves (late entries welcome) for me to do a report over the weekend.

@ Pholk
Spoiler :
Hard luck Pholkhero, guess I cant tempt you with a shot at an immortal MLG later?

Spoiler pholk :

to bad bout the loss. same thing happened in my first emperor game to! (this is like my 4th or 5th emp. game)

@Pholk

Spoiler :

Definitely, you're not fond of these series. Tough luck, but I agree with Immy - these were well spent hours. You'll get better luck on DM forum with Mansa - you bet I'll stick around and try to put my 50 cents (for what's worth ;))

Plan:

Spoiler :

- Stay alive
- Switch to Feudalism for LBows and strengthen the borders
- Rex what's left of the land
- Get to Liberalism 1st
- Develop eco

Reality:

Spoiler :

I'm still alive [party]

One thing that went good - not bad ain't it ?

As mentionned before, I started Feudalism right ahead, delaying the Paper for Lib-race.

I won't go into too much details - basically all the wonders went by, while I haven't attempted a single race for them.

I learn that I'm the weakest civ in the world - I knew it already, still it hurts

After Feudalism, I paused for Construction. I got it in three and went back for the Lib-race.

One of rare GP I'm going to have during this game - a GS - has been born in Cuzco. I used him later on to half-bulb Education.

I basically went of frantically checking for the WHEOOH every turn. I tried to keep everyone as happy as possible.

On turn 163, I settled a filler city:

Paper checked in turn 166. I started Education, half-bulbed for 7 turns discount.

I've done some trades here and there.
Got Meditation, Philo, MC, Compass, Machinery and Optics, Guilds, Drama later on. I mainly was talking with Joao, not wishing to strengthen my neighbors.

Bismy burnt a GM on a GA, pushing his eco even further with Banking & Eco.

Then something weird happened ( never had this happening before ):

Qin has been assautling this city for a few turns. He must love Inca people :D
Weird thing is, he is pretty well boxed in his country - why bother giving the city to the best Rexer ?

Anyway, we'll take it. Thank you.

Education checked in, and Libaralism was still a viable opportunity as none of known competitors was close to it.

In the mean time, Joao circumnavigated the globe :goodjob:

All religious related wonders were gone here and there, and we hit the 5 million people limit.

And in turn 187

Did it! Joao was 3 turns to it when I finished it.
Another thing going well :)

I slinged Printing Press to get some serious money - my cottages are maturating around, no need to disregard this bonus.

On the same turn, I settled one another city:

One turn before ending, I revolted to Free Religion.

Gunpowder is to be done in 4, than I'll go for democracy and SoL.

Sum-up & plans:

Spoiler :

Not that bad. Things are going pretty fine.
Some more rexing (and Qin's generosity) provided me with a healthy empire:

I'm 1st in land (good), 4th in GNP (~less good) and last in power (BAD).
I'm still alive! Still, I'll need more soldiers once I got the powder.

I lag in techs towards Joao, being on the same level as my neighbors (well, Qin is lagging a little bit behind).

No one is WHEOOH, still the breathing space is finished and I will have to look out seriously over my borders.

I can stick another city (or two).

Plans:
- Improve economy & research
- Build national wonders : Oxford & Wall Street in the capital, Moais somewhere, HE when available in Ica, NE - don't know yet.
- Buildup cities until the happy cap - no more whip
- Head for Rifling to make sure I'm not backstabbed

Off we go!
