Not long got the game and trying to learn it by playing it at Marathon speed and lowest level, I don't realy see the benefit though. From the games I have started and from reading the forum here it seems the speed setting affects everything.
So units move faster, great for exploring on the huge map.
Everything else needs three times the amount; food etc.
So aside from the movement rate and perhaps being able to plan a bit more at the start; more time to consider Settlement/City Placement. What is the benefit in playing at a different speed level?
Is it just me not getting it yet?
